It gets expensive getting the hull cleaned several times a year. Make sure your zincs are up to date, or you can have some very expensive damage to metal parts.

Your absolutely adorable, and if I had a daughter with your adventurous spirit I would be always concerned but an extremely proud father. Now, with that being said, the back of the boat is called the stern, the little button with the red lanyard on your dinghy motor goes around your wrist. So if anything were to happen, and you for some reason fall out, it will pull that button out, stopping the motor, and keeping it from running you over and getting hit by the prop. This is very important. And as adorable as it was to hear you say it, wouldn't it be "better" and not "gooder"? As for the boat, listen to it. Learn the sounds it makes. When one day you hear something you've never heard before you'll know right away something isn't right. Also it's very important on a boat to have systems, or routines. You should establish a routine for example when starting the engine. You check the oil, you open this valve you turn on these switches, etc. Things can go wrong in a hurry even just sitting on the mooring. Its important that you develop routines to limit costly mistakes. Know where everything is, Again, in an emergency you may have no time to fumble around to find what you need. A good boat owner accepts full responsibility for their vessel and everyone on board, and she always knows what to do. Your gonna do great. If you ever have a question you can always ask. I'll do my best to help you from afar. I've spent many years on and around boat. I was a commercial fisherman growing up in Maine and I just recently spent five years living on my sailboat in Puerto Vallarta, MX. I'm still here now, but I've sold my boat. Anyway, you'll figure it out along the way. Keep a positive attitude, but know when if its time to get out of the boat get out, otherwise as they say, it will become a hole in the water you keep throwing money into. I'll tell you what I have often done, as soon as I bought a boat, I put it up for sale. Boats can take time to sell so I might have the boat for two years and if someone comes along and wants to buy it, but I'm not ready, I simply decline their offer. Or if I am ready, well then off I go. Some things to think about. As I said I'd be happy to try and answer any question as best I can. Cheers,
Always attach the kill-switch lanyard to your wrist, especially when alone...just in case you fall overboard and the dinghy continues on to the dock without you.
It's a 40' boat, it doesn't have a kill switch, it ways probably 60k pounds and maybe does NMPH don't think much chance of being flung overboard ? Still should invest in good PFD's
Put that red cord around your wrist. People are killed by their dinghy when they fall overboard. It keeps going in a circle and runs them over and over
As a former boat owner, I feel the need of a little reality in this adventure. First, the two happiest days of boat ownership are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. Second, boat stands for... Bring Out Another Thousand. And lastly, the definition of boat...a hole in the water in to which you throw money. This will be an expensive journey, I can tell you that from experience...but I never learn my lesson, Sold the boat and bought a horse farm...A hole in my backyard into which I throw money!
@suiterd62 I loved my boat till I added up the expense and divided it by the time I went out on it...an eye opening experience! I like boating and do miss it from time to time.
As beautiful as that boat is, I'd really like to see the engine room. The engine room is the heart of any power boat and will tell you a lot about it. From you have shown it looks like it was taken very good care of, let's hope the engines look as good or at least functional. Congrats on your new home on the water, I'm looking forward to future videos...
I am getting jealous of you again Hannah! Anyone who "thinks" they know what direction you are going just never knows which is fun and why I love it every time you post a new video! Did not see this coming but oh so so cool! :-)
I recommend swapping out your stove for an induction cooktop. Much safer and I think it's better for cooking. Swap out the oven too, if it's gas. A convection oven/microwave combo is great for cooking/baking.
That is very adventurous to jump from land to ocean travel. Even with a bargain purchase price, maintenance and berthing costs will be much higher than for the camper. Also, open ocean travel in a 40 foot boat is no joke, even traversing the relatively mild Pacific between southern California and the Bay Area. You should not travel alone. That's especially true without years of experience, and with intent to travel to Mexico, Seattle, Alaska, etc.
Raised my commercial Fishman out of Monterey Bay I have great respect for the ocean. Personally losing many friends to the ocean over the years I would not ever want to live on a boat.
@@laurasperry2261 I agree. A friend in Santa Cruz grew up sailing and upon retiring, bought a 40' yacht to live on and sail solo to Hawaii. After a couple of dry runs, he encountered a strong storm. It damaged his yacht enough that he was forced to return. Had he been further out at sea, less aware and diligent about maintenance, or been less competent, he could have been lost. He eventually tired of living on the water, sold his yacht, and now travels around the country in a converted van - somewhat an inverse of what Hannah is attempting.
@@daz9402 Your comment does not make sense. In this video, she is in southern California. So what's this about Australia? Even if the boat were in Australia, it would take a LOT more than $1000 to transport it halfway around the world.
@@gregparrott Daz's comment is likely in reference to the B.O.A.T. acronym that many share referring to how expensive it is to own/operate a vessel. B.O.A.T. often stands for "bust out another thousand' or 'borrow another thousand, in reference to the thousands of dollars it costs to own/operate a boat.
FYI you probably shouldn't go swimming there. Any location where lots of boats are docked. Is also a location for large dumping of sewage. But that's totally exciting. Great boat. Great deal. Psyched for some more videos.!
I spent a couple of months “yacht sitting” for a friends years ago. I only got out to sea a couple of times when the owners came, but it was a great experience!
I find it so funny when people put the headings of living on a “Tiny Boat”. Proceeds to show off a huge bedroom etc! I have a 24’ pocket cruiser sailboat, now THAT is tiny. Your boat is defo NOT tiny.
Beautiful boat.A tip when ever starting a out board or generator etc.Pull the string very slow, until you feel it engage then apply pressure fast pull. The mechanism as a small plastic lug ,which has a habit of snapping from the shock of pulling regardless from the start.ie small pull feel the pressure full fast pull.

Imagine my surprise coming out of Petco Park after another Padres win and realizing that Dr Hannah is in our harbor- - somewhere hidden of course. You can count on me staying tuned - whether by land or by sea it’s Hannah I came to see.
What a wonderful beautiful surprise. I'm very happy for you Hannah. I think this is a wonderful idea and I'm sure it's going to give you many happy days.
Congratulations Hannah. I'll look forward to following you on this venture. The sea is another world, and boats are nothing like land vehicles. Be sure you get a good survey before you head out to sea. Trawlers are wonderful, capable boats, but have an art to managing heaving weather. You may get your sea legs with this boat but, I can see you migrating to a sailing craft as a trawler is a very expensive boat to run (fuel mainly) for any distance and your limited to coastal cruising. I'm excited for you. What a great chapter of life you've engaged upon.
Great news!! Boats need lots of constant cleaning, and looking after the engines. Look after the engines: make sure the cooling systems are working well. Engines FIRST, everything else second :). Looks a nice 'Trader' boat, great layouts and nice quality.
Hey Doc, for tips on sailing and maintaining a motor yacht try watching UA-camr Sailing Doodles. Bobby moved from a sail boat to a motor yacht and often includes "How To's".

Very good Gordie. Been there done that. Maintenance is never ending. What about refill of fresh water? If you are mooring, what about storms? Boat slip rental will eat you alive. No thanks. Big mistake.

The two happiest days in a boat owner's life are the day that they buy the boat & the day that they sell it. You are the Chief Engineer of the boats power, light & water company. Buying used does mean that the equipment is broken in better but you are also going to be fixing things on a regular basis. You're going to have an adventure learning all this. Boat handling tip:Go slow like a pro,go fast like an ass. Wear a PFD in your dinghy & a kill switch on your wrist.
I just saw this one Doc. I love your videos and I like the boat. Like I have said if you are in Minnesota dinner is on me and keep the good videos coming.
I've heard that a boat is a 'hole in the water you pour money into.' Might be a decent place to reside between adventures if the lovely doctor can find calmer water to moor in. The inside looks nice, well equipped and fairly spacious. Good, somewhat different alternative to an apartment. But what apartment can do donuts?
Agree. Don’t pull that boat out of water….cost of lift, sitting dry dock, then repairs costs thousands. Unfortunately boats rareLy appreciate. However renting for $500.00 month is good.
I love the water and have thought about a boat life vs van life. The only drawback is once a yr you do have to do maintenance to the exterior part of the boat. Can be high. The boat has to be lift out of the water to work on the bottom. Cost - $3K - $10K. Depends on size of boat and amount of damage. Keep up with weather so you can move to a safe place.

The impact of owning a boat no doubt softened somewhat by at least having adequate funding and wouldn't shock me to find the intelligence and common sense to do repairs or improvements right the first time.

They still have a picture of my buddy Ron and I on there web site LOL. Then I moved back to NY in 2012 why IDK. Ready to drive my Safari back to Florida. Any way you can get yourself a few books from the book store at the school that would help you understand more about the systems and how to fix them if you get stuck. The biggest problem with a boat is the fuel system. Got to keep some stabilizer in the fuel. Or just use it. Letting them sit can cause fuel problems. You look so Adorable in the Dingy.
Lol you got a lot of stuff to get use to. That boat is going to rock back and forth. And you also went from no boat to a big boat.. it’s going to take a lot a lot of practice just to even get that thing in and out of the inlets. I don’t think the boating thing will last to long lol. Thank you again for sharing another great video. If you need any advice, don't be shy about reaching out. You can learn a lot from those of us who already went through the learning curve of life on a boat. I still love it, even after several high water event and a couple of hurricanes.
When in the dingy, please use the kill switch and a PFD. It's not about how small the HP is on your boat but about that other guy who swamps you out of nowhere.
Don't be deceived people. Boats are EXPENSIVE. It's not going to be $500 a month. You need to pay insurance, payment, mooring fees, and the fuel costs to take it out are very high. And that spot is not ideal, so if/when she moves it she'll have to pay probably $15 a foot for a slip plus a live-aboard fee $200-300/month if you're lucky enough to even find a live-aboard slip anymore. It can easily become around $1500+ to live on a boat.
Hang in there with it! check out a few moorings, they make all the difference in the world. It's easy to find good resources for wind and tide/waves. It is a life changer and will for sure give you the bug. Changing and going to different moorings can be intimidating, but most marinas and mooring yards are pretty understanding and helpful. You learn very quickly. Some even offer a shuttle service so that you dont have to use your dinghy and can call for a pickup/drop off to a town center. One of the benefits of your smaller 4hp motor is weight. since it is just basically a tender, you want to be able to lift it easily and be fuel efficient. So thats a plus. Dont get too discouraged yet! You sound open minded to it so give it a good chance and good luck!
I lived on a 1949 46' Chris-Craft double cabin cruiser for over 20 years. You are far better off with a fiberglass boat. Keep up on the zincs or repairs get real expensive. For viewers, zinc is put on underwater metal parts to keep them protected. The zinc takes the brunt of the corrosion and they need to be replaced periodically.
Hi Hannah, love your work, but please use the ‘kill cord’ when driving in the dinghy. For those who don’t know, the red curly cord on the outboard engine slips over the wrist of the person controlling the boat. It is designed to stay with the wearer and to shut down the engine immediately if the driver falls out of the boat or loses their balance and cannot steer. Each year, in countries across the globe, countless people die or suffer life-changing injuries through accidents with small outboard-powered boats. If the ‘kill cord’ is not being worn and the boat driver cannot steer or accidentally falls from the boat, there is nothing to stop the boat continuing to run until the gas runs out. In that time, an unguided boat becomes a weapon to anyone in its path. Thanks for reading. Go well. 👍🏼🙂

Cheers,
Number the engines "One" & "Two".
Start #1 first on off days & start #2 first on even days to keep the running hours equal.
Always attach the kill-switch lanyard to your wrist, especially when alone...just in case you fall overboard and the dinghy continues on to the dock without you.
Wear a PFD!!
Such good advice.
Totally worried her beautiful hair was going to get sucked into the motor during the donut.
It's a 40' boat, it doesn't have a kill switch, it ways probably 60k pounds and maybe does NMPH don't think much chance of being flung overboard ? Still should invest in good PFD's
Sorry mis read, you talking about the tender ? I agree ✌️💜🎸
Took the words right out of my mouth. But we’ll wish Hannah well, anyway.
i lived on a 40' boat for 10 years...after it hit a deadhead and sank, i am now truck and trailer guy...much easier
@@bcgrittner8076 Absolutely...Boats can be a lot of fun...just don't get blindsided by the expense.
@suiterd62 just a touch of reality...boating, especially large boating is a very expensive hobby.

Agree! It's great for keeping things warm after cooking. Ya can toast bread on it too.
I like you smile
You are forgetting that she currently has to run the gen set the entire time during electric cooking.
@@kristopherdetar4346 Let's hope not!

Imagine my surprise coming out of Petco Park after another Padres win and realizing that Dr Hannah is in our harbor- - somewhere hidden of course. You can count on me staying tuned - whether by land or by sea it’s Hannah I came to see.
Just found your channel.
I dont get it.... Do you have to pay $200 a month for anchorage? Or is that a boye? Sounds expensive.
"You're gonna need a bigger boat" lol
How do you power all of your appliances and electronics by being anchored there? I have a slip where I keep my boat and it comes with shore power.
What a wonderful beautiful surprise. I'm very happy for you Hannah. I think this is a wonderful idea and I'm sure it's going to give you many happy days.

oh ya I get your drift!

That is a beautiful old boat! The richness of the wood is amazing. Glad you got a deal!
I've heard that a boat is a 'hole in the water you pour money into.'
Might be a decent place to reside between adventures if the lovely doctor can find calmer water to moor in. The inside looks nice, well equipped and fairly spacious. Good, somewhat different alternative to an apartment.
But what apartment can do donuts?
Depending on where you live (SF, LA, Hawaii) the boat might be cheaper than living on land.
Agree. Don’t pull that boat out of water….cost of lift, sitting dry dock, then repairs costs thousands. Unfortunately boats rareLy appreciate. However renting for $500.00 month is good.
@@lmtada True, but she's owning the boat and making payments, while renting water, lol.
I have a guess that you are a traveling Dr. Is that accurate?
I love the water and have thought about a boat life vs van life. The only drawback is once a yr you do have to do maintenance to the exterior part of the boat. Can be high. The boat has to be lift out of the water to work on the bottom. Cost - $3K - $10K. Depends on size of boat and amount of damage. Keep up with weather so you can move to a safe place.

I grew up around boating, I’ve got a yard full of boats with one of them that you can sleep on and we sleep on it for 2 nights every year for the fishing rodeos and are so glad when we get back to land.
Go well. 👍🏼🙂
