This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2023 Honda CR-V and the updated Toyota RAV4 compact crossover SUVs. The new CR-V has grown by 2.7” and is longer than the RAV4. They have about the same front row legroom, but the Honda CR-V has an extra 3.2” of rear legroom. The Honda offers more cargo space an extra 1.7 cubic feet behind the second row and an extra 6.7 cubic feet of overall space. The Honda CR-V has a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder matched to a CVT, 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. The Toyota RAV4, a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options in the US, standard AWD in Canada. The Honda CR-V comes standard with a 7” digital driver display, a 7” touchscreen with wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, available 9” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto on the top trim. The Toyota RAV4 comes standard with a 7” driver display, an 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, available 10.5” touchscreen and 12.3” digital driver display on the top trim. The RAV4 top trim also gets a JBL sound system, the CR-V Bose system is only available on the top hybrid model. The Honda CR-V gas model is missing some features the RAV4 has like a 360-camera, ventilated front seats, navigation and a panoramic sunroof. In the US, the RAV4 has an available panoramic sunroof but in Canada the CR-V and RAV4 get a moonroof. Fuel economy, the RAV4 does a little bit better at 8.8L/100 km, 27 MPG city and 7.1L/100 km, 33 MPG highway. The CR-V gets 9.1L/100 km, 27 MPG city and 7.6L/100 km, 32 MPG highway. Great Review Andrea. I owned a Honda Accord previously which I absolutely loved. I currently own a 2019 Toyota RAV 4 XLE AWD and couldn’t be happier. When I was shopping for a new suv in 2019, these were the 2 models I was considering. I opted for the RAV 4 because of their included standard safety features and price. I couldn’t justify paying thousands of dollars more for a CRV to get the same features that Toyota offers for a much lower price. Thank you for mentioning features vs price comparison between the CRV and RAV 4. That was the dealbreaker for me ultimately going with the RAV 4.

The 2016 CR-V was the best ever CR-V in my opinion. It was lighter than the current one. Had a 2.5l engine that really gave amazing fuel efficiency. And the car had zero defects for the 4 years I owned it. The current 1.5l turbo is noisy, underpowered (it is as big as the original Honda Pilot) and has lousy fuel efficiency when loaded up. Its fuel efficiency flies out the window when the turbo spins up under load. It has also got poor acceleration because the engine changes valve timing when the turbo spins up. This is what Atkinson cycle engines do to avoid engine knock.

Not sure what you're on about. The 2021 CR-V sold a respectable 360K units, but the RAV4 sold 407K in the same year.
Decade old technology? Anyone who isn't ignorant knows tech in cars goes beyond the center infotainment screen. Toyota basically pioneered standard advanced safety equipment in all their vehicles at all trim levels. The RAV4s 2.5L engine is also a marvel of engineering, combining DI and multiport for a cleaner burn, while achieving the highest thermal efficiency in the industry at 41%.

You guys are right ! I just canceled my order for a 2023 Honda CRV EX-L since for a similar price I’m getting a 2023 RAV4 gas limited with more standard features in Canada. I been owning Honda Cars for more than 10 years, loved them !but I feel Honda wants to profit their cars in the Canadian market with big prices and by removing options like home link, rain sensing wipers, premium sound system, panoramic sun roof just to mention some! The current EX-L model price used to be the same for the 2022 touring!! So now you are paying more for less….

I think its hard to make one model better than other just based on the MSRP price in the current market. Nowadays Rav4's dealers are asking for more mandatory accessories and upping the price and some Honda dealers are just asking $x market adjustment without mandatory accessories. Its good to get all the prices for the rav4 and CRV if you want to decide. Just going based on the MSRP to decide will not give you the better insight.

As expected, 1.5T in "normal" mode is a bit slow on acceleration.

My husband is a big guy with very broad shoulders and the RAV 4 was an immediate no. He was not comfortable. The CRV was an immediate yes for shoulder room. In Texas, the top trim CRV hybrid was less expensive than the top trim Rav4 hybrid. Strange how different prices are per region. I'm a huge Toyota fan. My last 3 vehicles have been Toyota and super reliable and low maintenance. I really was expecting to get into another Toyota, but Honda really surprised me.

Another excellent video from you two. Bravo!
If you're not a sunroof person, I'd go with a Toyota Venza! Zero drivetrain maintenance issues, because there is no mechanical drivetrain.
Bulletproof Synergy Drive ECVT with all-wheel drive STANDARD.
As quiet, if not more quiet han a Honda CRV and definitely more quiet and a smoother ride than a RAV4.
If you do the math it makes sense for both fuel economy and the environment to buy a hybrid.
If you're going to buy a hybrid there are no clutches on either a Toyota RAV4 or the Venza, unlike the Honda hybrid drivetrain.
Also, the Venza uses a lithium ion battery that is even more bulletproof.
    TOYOTA VENZA HANDS DOWN.
It's a handsome ride and the right choice for 2023.
Also I'll take the JBL sound system over BOSE all day everyday. The JBL sound system also sounds better in the Venza than it does in the RAV4 I don't know why but it does.
Also the seats in a Venza are literally the most comfortable car seats I've ever owned in any vehicle. RAV4 not so much.

There probably aren't many CRVs either, but if pricing helps gate demand a little bit in the short term, maybe Honda will end up back at market value pricing in a year or two. Plus, they can stem short term losses based on rising raw materials costs.

Right now, if someone orders a Rav4 Hybrid, there is a wait time of 12-18 months at least, so basically you are ordering a 2024 model (who knows the pricing or features that rav4 will have). And if you want to get any Rav4s currently available at the dealerships, you are paying a premium that's well over the difference between Rav4 and CRV pricing. I have myself ordered a 2022 XSE last year, and there is absolutely no information what so ever from the dealership as to when I am going to get it. One thing that frustrates me with your pricing information, and that of other video reviewers of cars, is that you list and compare MSRP pricing of different models and trims, but you ignore the actual available purchase prices after inclusion of dealer overpriced (and unwanted) add ons and market based price hikes. Now I imagine these added costs are variable by region and dealer, such that it is hard to reliably report to a nationwide audience. But, some kind of feedback on "real world" prices would be appreciated. If you struggle with the variability of dealer upcharges, maybe at least try to characterized in what areas dealor upcharges are higher or lower.
Otherwise, I like and appreciate your reviews. And please do a comparison of the CRV and Rav4 hybrid models.

Scratch that cross buying stuff, I find it ridiculous that a honda crv is almost crossing honda pilot territory for pricing. Buy a new crv or a last years model honda pilot.
Just seems ridiculous how they're pricing their crv. If you think about it, im in the market for the new crv hybrid, but seems like the rav 4 prime plug in hybrid is more of better option.

Huge Toyota fan but extremedy impressed/surprised by crv. Bigger/ Roomier feeling, more comfortable, better interior, quieter, Smoother driving. Price difference not All that bad.. But hard for me to get past the turbo charge with cvt... For a potential problems, quicker problems. So I completely get why the c r v is quite popular even despite a little more pricing...... Maybe not a lot more pricey like in Canada as you state. But i'm looking for comfort more so now... Being around 50 years old. Might just keep my camry for a little longer And see what happens. But maybe looking for A. Compact SUV in the near future. I sure didn't want to like the CRV. But I really did

    Great video guys 👍
IF you go for the Honda and are not a fan of CVTs, then, the Honda Hybrid E-Drive is the way to go. Even though it’s being called an eCVT, it is not at all like the traditional steel belt driven CVTs. Honda uses a dedicated motor in place of a traditional CVT. The ICE drives the E-Drive motor which charges the battery pack and also provides propulsion.
There is an excellent UA-cam video called “Understanding the Honda Hybrid E-Drive” which explains the E-Drive system. In my opinion the E-Drive system is the best option to a CVT short of a REAL transmission…

I'm upset a bit that they updated the rav4 now cause I could of gotten a bigger drivers display and a new toyota media screen but my rav 4 has not let me down and it's fun to drive and it's fun to use the cruise controll lane tracing assist and the lane centering so I'm thinking in 2 years when my daughter can drive ima give her my car and then buy a new rav 4 hopefully in 2024 they will be upgraded even more I kinda miss the old crv now Honda is using the civic look and then soon there will be no point in buying some hondas because they all look the same

RAV4 XLE with Premium Package (Gas or Hybrid) is the best value for all the features one needs.

Honda CR-V exterior is much better and stylish than Toyota RAV4. Interior in Honda is also a step above Toyota RAV4. As for for me I would pick only 2023 Honda Pilot Sport with 3.5 engine - the best or nothing. The only obstacle is 2023 KIA Telluride with a new dashboard which make it luxury class SUV. So after carefull consideration I vote for Toyota 4Runner in which one can ride anywhere before his death.

...it does not even have rear seat cup holders.

The review I was looking for! I'm in between choosing one of these cars (if I can even get in line for one) for the past year or so. If Honda could offer more or similar features to the Rav4 Hybrid for the price it would have been an easy decision for me to try the new redesign, but you can't beat the value and features for the price on the RAV4 hybrid. RAV4s are very popular here in the NW U.S. and it is sad there are not better choices in this hybrid crossover class right now.

As a Honda fans. If I am buying a non-hybrid version, I will definitely take CR-V over RAV4 given the refinement and quietness of 1.5T engine. RAV4's 2.5 is just plain noisy and sluggish.
There aren't anyone have done hybrid as good as Toyota, nor are able to command the resale value and customer satisfaction, as the smartest car company in the business. Because hybrid makes perfect sense, as both short and long distance commutes. If only RAV4 has the same interior execution as more expensive Venza and CR-V. Its interior just too cheap for its own good. Even a 1998 Corolla has more soft touch plastic than current RAV4 does. What a pity.

Its kind of so surprising that nobody is addressing supply issues with Toyota. Rav4 Prime is almost impossible to get without paying $5000 in mark-ups. Toyota dealership in SF charges $2000 markup which is the cheapest in north California, and the wait-time is nearly 1 year. If you factor-in dealership markups CR-V will come out way cheaper than Toyota. Further, Toyota themselves are ripping off consumers. They will not provide the most cheapest trim. If they do, they will load it up with packages. And as the supply is short, consumers just have to take what Toyota offers. If availability is to be factored in, CR-V and even Tucson would be better than Rav4 hybrid or Rav4 Prime.
