TA|Insights | Volume Two | Chapter One | UK Canal Carping | Nick Helleur
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 бер 2021
- The UK’s canals are home to a wide variety of fish and over the years have gained a reputation for their often-mysterious carp stocks. With many canals being connected to river systems, the numbers of carp present are ever changing, but there lies the challenge!
In this instalment of TA|Insights, we join old school canal angler, Nick Helleur, as he tackles a stretch steeped in carp angling history. Set deep in the Colne Valley, the winding network of both rivers and canals provide a haven for fish, having produced carp to over 40lb in the past!
Sit back and enjoy this quaint look at the wonderous British countryside, as Nick visits his old childhood roots, in search of the ultimate prize; a UK canal thirty-pounder.
**Angling on the Grand Union canal is available throughout the year, and requires the purchase of the relevant club membership prior to angling.
The stretches featured in this video are controlled by the following tickets:
Blenheim AC - www.blenheimas.co.uk/ and URAC - www.uracs.co.uk/
For other stretches of the Grand Union, please check online for appropriate club membership.

Couldn't agree more, thanks for watching!
One of your own is nick a product of a certain generation we may not see again top chap top film a credit to thinking anglers ✌🏻🙏🤙
I hooked my 1st Carp in the Grand Union Canal in the mid 70's when I was very young . Did the same for me you don't forget those moments if your an Angler : )
I always watch videos with nick in as it’s no bull just great entertainment, bring on another 👌👍
Gotta love nick. No nonsense no bullshit just a great angler and my kind of fishing, uk canals and rivers. As good as it gets 💪👍👍
We’ll done nick . You seem to have a magic on rivers and canals
Love nick, such a clever fisherman. I wish he did more canal fishing. I think it's by far the best carp fishing. Top viewing TA 👍🏻
My pb carp is 32lb from my local canal this guy is an inspiration
Hi mate I see your Leicester photo on you channel. You carp fished many of the canals in Leicester? I’m in Leicester too 👍🏻👍🏻
Loved the chapter. Great to see inspirational motivational film beautifully shot without any annoying drum and base music. Just made me want to get out and fish. Showed how beautiful English canals can be. Great work! Looking forward to the rest.
Perfect, glad you liked it Gary!
I love a happy ending! Nice to see some familiar stretches there mate- shame about the tring stretch- that used to be full of carp. I live 20 yards from the canal in Uxbridge- I need to make more use of it after watching this. Thanks for a great vid- keep it up
Nick Helleur top bloke.

Brilliant Nick.Really enjoyed that.Cant beat a bit of canal carping 👍
That’s me sorted for the week! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Let me guess...... that’s you sorted for the week....... 😂😂😂
I've started a canal carping campaign myself, loved the insight. Can't help but think nick is a real ringer for Frank Warren though 😂
gorgeous spots n what a mirror 25/26lbs ? great video 🎣🙂👍
Nick in my opinion is one of the most inspirational carp anglers on the scene by a mile, his approach to carp fishing is probably the closest we have to that old school magical feel that disappears constantly.
Nowadays with the intense amount of carp knowledge that is force fed down people’s throats the true anglers rely on the likes of Nick and the rest of the thinking anglers team to bring that sense of magic that carp fishing should entail.
Well done to Ben and the rest of the team very much appreciated.
Thanks for the very kind words, Lee!
That was epic, proper adventure!
Proper job. Love it nick👍
Nice to see Nick smiling after he lost that fish. It happens... and for someone with as much experience, how amazing to see such a positive reaction. Well done mate and congrats on a good film.
Absolutely spot on, Simon, it happens to us all. Thanks for watching!
yes nick one of the uk's best
How awesome that his terrier now knows the bite alarms and gets all excited 👊🏻 love all the vlogs and bluntness of nick keep em coming please.
Bert certainly knows the score! Thanks for watching, Daniel!
Awesome Nick awesome… cheers Chris & Sam
Top angling and a lovely carp to end with and for the first time ever Nick went the whole video without playing with his hair!!!
We don't know what you mean, he never touches his hair....... on our watch! Glad you enjoyed it!
Just smashing, no different to your book. Trials tribulations and strokes. Just pure angling big small it don't matter, being there and experiencing. Why more people can't be like this will never know. Respect that there's still people like Nick, long may it continue and to enjoy your adventures.
I was critical of Nick’s last vlog on here mainly because we know he can deliver absolutely brilliant material like this. Videos like this are complete gems of information and storytelling. Loved it from the first minute to the last. Great work Thinking Anglers and Nick.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Dan. Unfortunately making films like this takes a hell of a lot of time, and the RAW vlogs help us get as much content for you guys as possible. IS there anything you would like to see more of from Nick on his vlogs perhaps? Any feedback is always welcome
Probably the best bit of fishing I've watched in a long time epic well done nick
Thanks for the kind words, Chris!

Great movie.
Well that's how carp fishing should be what a cracking fish and ya can't get anymore real than that Well done nick 👏👍
Couldn't agree more, thanks for watching, Roy!
He,s a boy is old nick, im knackered just watching him all hypered up. The camera guy must dread going out with him to film the stress of catching for the camera. The joys of earning your living in angling.
You'd be surprised how relaxed Nick is while filming, he always pulls something out the bag! Thanks for watching!
What a fantastic angler
Thanks for a great film, now we know where Nick gets his great watercraft...not years of experience but learning from Bert, that dog is so alert and on the case!
Bert is the master of everything! Thanks for watching, Simon!
Brilliant 👏 video 📹 👏 👌 👍 man a legend 🙌 👏 👌 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, David!

Nick "the stick" still at it !
Great film nick you reminded me of old Jack Hargreaves years ago walking along the canal, you only need longer beard and pipe you be spitting image 😀 lol
Keep em coming mate so relaxing 😌 😎
The production on these films are great. I love your laid back perspective, older mind (sorry) you know what you're doing. So watchable👍
I'm an old boy so all fair 🤣
Thanks for the appreciation, Alan! Sure Nick won't mind the older mind saying haha!
One top video nick

My pb is 32lb from my local canal in 2019 absolutely love canal carping much more than lake fishing
Legend.
I love how he give his spots away once he is finished with them in his own way. But will come back for his own reasons
Nick “The Sunglasses” Helleur. Great video
Thanks!
Nicks top boy! 🤟🏻
Agreed! Glad you liked the film, Chris!
Nick - carp fishing ain't what it used to be, there's no quite places.
Also Nick - let's do a feature on some of the last quite places available.
That drone footage was wilstone, now almost completely devoid of fish and that not guessing, that walking from Aylesbury to marsworth at night with a spotlight and scanning every inch of water and not a single carp. Only 16 years ago I had a 22lb common from that Wilson's stretch. I was born in wilstone and the amount of carp there 35+ years ago was something to behold
It is a massive shame that the fish have all but disappeared!
Im sure you must know there quite a few by the White Lion at Startops. But nowhere near as many as there was.
One of the best NGAFA true dangler enough said
If you truly love carp fishing, then you will love this 👍
Kind words, John!
Brilliant result, Nick! You are owed that full English! 🤣
With a few extras! Thanks for watching, John!
"Folly..." Epic.... 😄
He certainly has a way with words! Thanks for watching guys!
The old butler sink marks the spot.
The world really is small after all...If Nick is reading this, first of all quality video. Living outside Watford, I didn’t get round to fishing the spots I prebaited right near the ground you were standing on. I can’t express in words how crazy it is that Nick carp fished here. Thought nobody did. Definitely inspired me to give it a go. Even though you caught no carp in the first spots do you reckon there is any? I’m speechless.
Thanks for watching the film! Although Nick didn't catch carp in the first spot, there's every chance! The lady on the boat near the second river said there was a few carp next to her boat only a few weeks prior to our visit. Best of luck if you try it!
There’s one or 2 of us...
Victory crumpet time. Nice fish.
Haha, is that after the full English or before?
I really enjoy watching Nick when he's on one! And low and behold he smashed it! Brilliant stuff, nice work!
Thanks for the kind words!
Top angling need to start fishing the canals
Not a bad idea! Good luck if you do, Wayne!
Nick's was one of the best Korda podcasts if you haven't seen it, brutal as fk but hilarious.
Proper geezer.
He just says it how it is, and we love him for it!
@@ThinkingAnglersTV yeah, it's refreshing in a world of 🐂💩 that's for sure. Great to see TA doing well, ATB fellas.
Only here for Bert!! 😂😂
He is the star of the show!
@@ThinkingAnglersTV need an hour long Bert session! He already wants to pull the barrow and is straight on the rod when the buzzer goes!! 👌🏻
Nice camo jacket.
Great angler and fella maybe a little miss understood by a few. "no stickers on my buckets mush"
🤙 Thanks, Andy
Next to a bridge that snag is probably a push bike or the ever traditional shopping trolley. But one thing you can put money on next to a bridge there's going to be something
Always the way isn't it!
❤️❤️
Hey Nick, great vid as usual. What bag are you carrying along the tow path right at the start? TIA
Probably deserve a few mushrooms with that fry up 😜
Maybe even a few hash browns! We like your thinking, Charlie!
Very nice video, greatting from Poland :) ! What's that reel you use ???
Thanks! Nick used Wychwood Riot 65s reels in this film
I hate anglers disturbing the swim, rushing to set up at the first swim.Fixed opinion what the best bait is.Leave all your gear in the car, watch the water and concentrate and get there at first light.I'm a lobworm lover just float fishing can put it in with very little disturbance, they never sense worm as danger. But yeah 100 percent location is the most important thing.I would love to make my videos as good as this :) I've got a video on here how to unhook carp on here i had the fish out too long i won't do that again. Thanks for the great advice
No problem, good luck in your angling!
Thank you I've gotta try zigs atm I think
The ATTs, are they standard ones with an underlit wheel added?
That second area is my local stretch and what it has become really is sad. Caught my first 20 out of there 25 years ago
It certainly is a massive shame, Chris!
The controlling club could have done more to protect it 🤬
@@benstock2513 to be fair, its a small club and canals can't reasonably be fenced either. A lot of the fish have also been removed for food and patrolling several miles of canal with no roads etc. near it is also tricky. Lots of reasons that combined have unfortunately emptied it
Excellent video. Have used the Wychwood Extremis rods? I am thinking about buying a set of 3 in 3.25 tc with Riot 65s reels and will be very grateful for any feedback you can give me. There are so many different rods pn the market price from £90 - £150 i am finding it very confusing to make a choice. T.I..A
I have a review video on my page. Go check it out. 👍🏻
@@MartynsAnglingAdventures Will do. Thanks for your reply much appreciated
@@christopherwarren6451 No worries!
What’s happened to the Carp population in the canals? I used to fish the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union in the late 90’s and there were numerous pods of Carp I’d get down there an hour before first light and you’d hear slurping all around. I did the same thing two weeks ago and there was nothing no sign of Carp whatsoever?
Hi mate......what exact breed of dog is Bart? Long haired Jack Russell maybe....
he’s the guv...lol
Certainly a Jack Russell, but not 100% on the breed
Anyone know what these reels name is?
What brolly you using?
Thats the Wychwood HD MHR MkII
The one that got blown away twice in the night... 😂

Excess fertilizer runoff?
That will definitely be another cause, but mainly people catching the fish for food... Eastern Europeans love eating carp and to them, the waterways are no different to fishing at the sea. It's mainly only British that have a culture of catch and return.
@@jordy46682 That's no longer true. Many French, German, Italian specimen hunters now practice catch and release. The problem is definitely an eastern European phenomenon.
@@Smudgie I definitely agree with the "specimen" part, but still for a lot of Europeans, they think fishing is for food. I was recently in France and caught a Pike and the guy got crazy when I said I was going to put it back... (Because he wanted to eat it)
@@jordy46682 Yes, it's generally the older generation that still eat the fish they catch. Here in Germany there has been a huge change over the past 30 years or so but even so there are still people that take home everything they catch. The argument generally being that you are causing the fish stress by handling and unhooking it, therefore a swift death is more humane. Then again the rules are ridiculous. If you were to catch such and such a fish during it's spawning period, then you are supposed to put it back. So in the case of spawning fish, you aren't causing the fish stress by handling and unhooking it?
always been a fan of nick and TA but never been a fan of fishing for carp you know are spawning ,
I think that most people would fish the canal if they knew there was carp there but can be a bad place after dark sometimes so if you do go be careful out there
Don’t know what your gonna catch
