I got a second hand flute with an almost empty little cup of Yamaha slide grease. I was wondering why the joints are scratched... now I know why. Got myself some alcohol and removed all of it (I am a noob and assumed the grease is necessary). Thanks for your advice!

Does this mean we are not supposed to use cork grease on our instrument? If not, why is it included in the flute case when you first purchased the flute

Historical reasons, as far as I was able to research. It came from back when wood and cork were used for these joints. In the 20th century people noticed that it increased wear by making dirt stick.

For preventing sticky pads one should floss, brush and rinse with water to remove any possibility of sugars from traveling down into the flute. This transference is very small but can be from the condensation that settles on the areas which warm up the slowest...yes, those pads. It is always good to swab out the inside with a clean, hemmed cloth. This serves to clean the tube of residue,... (dust, lint and moisture) while giving the metal surface a light polish. This isn't going to help the pads that may get sticky. They can even get to the point where the buildup of sugar residue can slow the key action or cement the pads closed. If not careful, then sometimes opening them can be harmful to the pad skin.

+Bilbo Baggins I remember one of our staff here had repair one famous flutists gold flute. He had a huge thing for the sweets. to the point that his rods and pins were frozen. Upon further inspection there was sugar deposits everywhere on the flute. The person never cleaned up there flute. In fact the only time it was clean was when he took it to the shop. Even the interior was never scrubbed with a cloth. It was a sight to be seen.

+The Flute Channel Eghads!! I fully believe that the reflectivity of the interior has a lot to do with the dynamics and ease of variable tone production. Since Gold doesn't tarnish, it only needs to be cleaned after playing (the easiest time to remove residue). Where most players should not venture is into trying to clean the key holes models) the tone hole risers and the embouchure riser but having them cleaned well can make a real difference.

+Bilbo Baggins the mouth piece would be only place i would go venture to clean. Tone holes, key cups, mech, I would steer far far away - Lili

+The Flute Channel Yes, those areas are for someone somewhat knowledgeable in assembly and repair. This is why I was rather cautious about the wording. However, it should be part of Univ./ Conserv. Flute performance training to be able to do some of the minor repairs as they may become rather necessary.

+Bilbo Baggins it totally should be. A lot of flute festivals have lectures and classes about, but it is quite sparse. Minor repair tech abilities can really save you from a bind. Will have our resident tech guy do some videos soon. Warm regards.

I need some help with cleaning my flute! You guys are truest amazing and I would love professional advice on this! So my flute has major sticking problems, I MEAN MAJOR! The rod on the right half is sticking severely. I’ve tried slide oil (because of my sister playing trombone) and I’ve also tried WD-40. It’s getting slightly better but no avail. This happened around the start of marching season and I cannot play my flute! I’ve been using my friends flute for now but concert season of just around the corner! I would love any help/advice! Stay amazing guys! ✨💕

thanks. Okay so please don't try any oil, specifically wd-40. that can destroy the pads and rods. I would really consider taking it to a music shop to had looked at. What state or area do you live in? We can give you recommendations. For a student flute it should be very small to fix if any rods or pads need cleaning. But let us get back to you and we can recommend more things for you to do.

And don’t use water because it’s gonna ruin the cork at the top

So are we not supposed to use Square Cash Grace? On a metal flipped? How come the "race is provided with your instrument? Sorry what I meant was are we not supposed to use cork grease on our instrument? On a metal flute? If not, why is it provided in a case when you first buy your instrument?

My local flute place cleaned my flute pads to get rid of the sticky sound. It was good. three days later, they're sticky again. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. I clean the flute meticulously. Wash my hands. Rinse my mouth. It seems I'm doomed to sticky pads!!! ?

Could be the humidity in your room also wait at least 15 minutes after eating or rinsing your mouth. It might help. Sorry to hear about your sticky situation.
