Completely agree...I had vintage Fenders where the necks went haywire and I had to give up on them..started buying custom shop Basses and haven’t looked back..
Got my CS 1960 P-bass Heavy Relic and I can't put it down. Plus it's the only expensive bass I have had that I don't need to worry about knocking about.
I think that’s the best thing about a relic! It will always look “as new”! I just love an old school spec P bass. Tone for days! What profile’s your neck? T
Great review as usual Tyler, your bass is a beauty. If I was going to get a custom shop base it certainly would not be one of those road worn basses that looks like it was left out in the rain.
My last comment was a long post but you're dead on with your review. Based on a lot of experience playing Precision Basses and working on them. No disagreements at all.
My CS Pino Precision has that same fat 59 neck profile. In 50+ years of playing it's the best sounding P bass I've ever owned. Why? Perfect fit and finish ....and like you said the perfect electronics, nitro finish, and a fat neck always does it.
That Fender Custom shop Pino Palladino Precision Bass you're holding is my absolute dream bass. I have 2 precision basses and Jazz Bass. I play precision basses 💯 percent of the time. I'll never sell that Jazz Bass (but that's entirely a different story). When you said the " The TONE of the PRECISION BASS is REALLY in the neck and the electronics" you're dead on. I bought the 2 p basses with the thickest baseball ⚾ necks I could find, super clean pickups, noiseless with that unmistakable p bass growl". It's nowhere near the quality of the Precision Bass you're holding because quite frankly I can't afford it now. However within a certain amount of time not only will I hope to be a better bassist/*musician due to my continued obsessive practice/learning/playing more and more basslines in Rock N Roll, Heavy Metal, Blues, Jazz, Latin etc etc but by that time I'll be holding the beautiful costum shop Precision Bass as you are. In closing I don't have any disagreements with you. Although yes there are plenty of basses/solely due to the pickups in the bass that are much hotter than this one but hotter doesn't truly mean better at all. I'm more concerned with great tone with medium-on the higher spectrum. Opposed blazingly hot pickups. For instance I really like both Seymour Duncan SPB-3/Quarter Pounders and SPB-4 Steve Harris signature pickups. However I believe the hand wound pickups in Custom shop Precision Bass pickups have a more organic, vintage, natural growling/clarity/tonal frequency and texture is simply perfect. There's no song that bass won't sit well within the mix. In the meantime the SPB-3 and Wilkinson p bass pickups work perfectly for me for now that is. In closing I will say to anyone who is beginner or even a seasoned pro who doesn't wanna take his expensive basses on the road. I highly recommend the Wilkinson pickups. They're about 25$ brand new and they hit all the top marks when looking for classic p bass sound.
That is a great bass, you can’t get anything better with the exception of a Ron Thorn master-built. FCS is the way to go, vintage Fenders are great but these are also mass produced guitars that have 40-50 years of wear on them. They came off the line in Fullerton, California just like the american fenders today in Corona, California. Which is great but they never have had the care and nuance that goes into a team or master built FCS guitar.
Did you get a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard? That neck is beautiful! I just ordered one with AAA Rosewood. Fiesta red. Now the waiting is the hardest part.
Well made points, though I would have to disagree about neck thickness and tone. Whilst yes, fatter would probably mean a little warmer, as there is more wood for the sound to resonate, I think the fretboard wood much more important! I have an American Professional Jazz Bass which is one of the best instruments I've ever played, because I found one with an amazing rosewood fingerboard cut, so it sounds amazing, but the feel is awesome too, because it has a suuuuper thin neck (which I love lol). Still though, the one thing I don't like about it, you touched upon, which is poly vs nitro, and mine unfortunately has poly. I agree that nitro is better for tone (and looks much cooler), but even the American original is pretty expensive, and this American pro cost me some. Still, who am I kidding, I would murder to play that bass in your hands 😆
@@TylerSpicer Thanks man! I've been posting some MTD 534 videos and I'll be posting some Custom Shop videos soon too. Would for u to check them out when/if you get a chance! Keep up the great work.
Hi Tyler, I want to buy a custom shop precision bass 1960 to 1964. What year is better? 60-64 are they the same pickups? From what I see its the 62 custom shop pickups the use? Is there any difference between the years? Which would you recommend. I am thinking 1960 precision bass rosewood board.
All about the neck for me-nothing better than a FCS neck on a P-bass. I prefer maple fretboard-which is 1 piece of wood for the entire neck-feels magical to me.
It was a shop ordered spec, they had ordered a number of this spec in in different colours and sent one of each colour to each of their stores here in the UK. T
Ok... first off the electronics are Gonna be the same ones that come on the American reissue models ( CTS Pots Switchcraft jack Sprague Cap Black & White Push Back Cloth Wiring ( American standards have this to minus the cloth wire as it’s a vintage detail thing) the same exact pre wired harness can be bought for $50-65 .. as far as the pickups go I believe that model fender sells for $120? If not other similar spec Fender P pickups are available for that kinda $$.. Lindy Fralin Vintage P Or SD Antiquity Will get you that FAT Vintage P Tone.... as far as the Nitro Finish I’d take it any day over the poly .. But the Nitro used today is nothing like the Nitro fender used back in the days Pre 68” the Nitro used today has a lot of additives UV blockers to prevent yellowing Plastic’isers(spellling ?) To make the Nitro tougher .. the whole finishing process was different then most importantly ( very few coats of color and clear were shot) ... Your thoughts on the Massive Neck On P’s Was Dead On And somthing I have never heard mentioned by anyone ( I learned this when I got a 1983 Squire JV 57 for those who don’t know what that is it’s a Reissue of a 57 P bass pre-AVRI 57 models from that day on a Real P to me Has to Have a HUGE neck ..... all your other points are agreeable
I do! It’s my no. 1! I don’t think I’ll ever part with it, just purely as I’ve always wanted a fiesta red P bass and it doesn’t get much better than this!
@@thecrayondemo well if you have a spec in mind, I’d go for it. A fender is never going to go out of fashion and if that was the only bass you had left - it’s definitely gonna do the job for so many sounds and situations! T

Hey Tyler, I really want to buy and learn bass but my parents are against it, yeah I still live with them because an apartment is very expensive in my Country if you're Single like me, anyway, I had guitar lessons back in 1998/99 but I had to give up and now none of my friends know how to play and I really don't want to waste my money on a new Gaming PC or a new console. I found a 2009 Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass for an excellent price that I absolutely love and is my #1 bass. Clearly I was very fortunate.

Tyler Spicer - TJS Bass number 10 fenders Custom care warranty . Is lifetime to the orig owner.
Knots in neck wood are usually thought of as desirable because wood with grain imperfections is always stronger. Agree about the nitro finish tho

I agree, but what do you think of American Special Fender precision bass in terms of quality ?
Tyler, did you special order your bass directly through the custom shop or did you get it through a store in the UK that is a custom shop dealer??
I have a Fender P bass that has 58 on the neck and 59 on the body. So what year is it?
I'm considering this. Out of interest, what tint is your neck on this bass? I see there's 3 levels on the order form.
I actually don’t know! I think it might be mid point? It’s definitely not the darkest!
Did you spec the guitar on paper and take delivery direct? Or did you find it in a shop?
It was a shop ordered spec, they had ordered a number of this spec in in different colours and sent one of each colour to each of their stores here in the UK. T
These basses are definitely way way better than lower end American basses, even significantly better than American original
G&L L100. Great bass. All G&L instruments are custom.
True! But so rare here in the U.K.! T
Jazz basses should have their neck and p’s should have theirs, but I suppose it comes down to personal feel and ear.
Are those Ernie Ball Slinky Flats?
jongroovin they aren’t! They’re chromes. I need to give the slinkys a try, definitely! T
Ah, Chromes are great for the smooth vintage vibe. Slinky flats are much brighter. Info about 50/50 between the 2.
