Kyrgyzstan - an adventure rider's paradise - Riding from Sydney to London EP 23

  • Mountain lakes, drinking vodka with locals, high passes, and curb side mechanics - we had it all in this episode
If you have been following along our journey you would know that we had particularly bad luck in Kyrgyzstan. We were plagued with mechanical issues from numerous flat tyres to breaking down in the mountains with a burned-out clutch.
But all that misfortune comes to an end in this episode. It does start with a small accident, but from there we finally get to experience the Kyrgyzstan that we have been hoping for ever since we started this trip. We head up to Son Kul, a mountain lake situated over 3000 metres high, where we stay at a yurt camp and nurse the injuries, we got from the accident with some local Kyrgy vodka. Staying in these yurts is not to be missed - a warm reprieve from the cold conditions riding at this altitude brings.
We then head Southwest, aiming for Osh the 2nd biggest city in the country. Although along the way we are waved down by some locals who just want some photos with us. We spend a good 30 minutes chatting with them before they whip out the vodka and start doing shots on the side of the road - this is obviously NOT condoned when riding motorcycles - however we felt it rude to say no, so we had a single shot and went on with our day.
One of the amazing things about Central Asia is that you can pretty much wild camp anywhere as long as you aren’t in someone’s back yard. After a rainy day of riding our Suzuki DR650s we stumbled upon an abandon house which we used as a shelter from the weather. Setting up our tents under the cover of one of the remaining roofs.
The next day we make our way to Osh where we give our bikes some much needed TLC. We stayed at Osh guesthouse where they gave us a little space to use as a garage. This is a very real part of overlanding - Bike maintenance! We put on new front tyres, replaced the chains and sprockets, put some gasket sealant on the clutch cover, fabricated a new screen out of a plastic dust bin, and also regreased the steering head bearings. And the bike felt like a new bike! Treat the bike well and it will treat you well.
Finally we make our way to Lenin Peak, just outside of Sary Mogul. This was a highlight of the trip for us. Stunning scenery, a reprieve from the mechanical issues we had been suffering the weeks prior. We climbed to the base camp of Lenin Peak and negotiated to camp outside of a local’s yurt and paid them to cook us some dinner and breakfast. The next morning we trekked up to what is called the Onion Farm, about 4000 metres in altitude but still dwarfed by Lenin peak which sits over 7000 metres. We got some great drone footage and then headed to the border of Tajikistan.
Kyrgyzstan is a country we will never forget. We took the bad with the good, but when it was good… it was really really good. We will be back!

    ------------
In 2018 we set off from Australia on our Suzuki DR650 motorcycles riding overland to England. We hope to travel to remote areas riding dirt roads whilst camping and meeting local people along the adventure.

Top tip to future bike + MC travelers:- If your front brake has been upside down (crash/fallen over etc) and air from the master/lever has travelled down the hose, just strap or zip tie your lever to the bar and leave it for 12-24 hours. Undo the strap, quickly pump it up, then strap again, after another 20-60 minutes will probably be fine. This allows any air trapped in the hose just below the master/lever to travel back into the master reservoir where it belongs.
These guys found out the hard way that if you get air in there, its tricky to 'pump' it back up. Best plan is to use a syringe and a piece of hose with DOT fluid in it, and push it from the caliper bleed port up to ward the lever not the other way around.
Krygy is great though, properly amazing MC country.

The effort that’s gone into this single episode is epic, much like the scenery and your experiences. The maps, the animated cost-breakdown, mixture of slow-mo footage and drone; such foresight! And look how well it’s coming together years later. Can’t believe you didn’t lose any footage and not sure how you managed to do the logistics of it all. Not to mention keeping the bikes going. It’s an impressive achievement. Bring on the next episode(s)- may it never end!

Fred Flintstone--No Front Brakes! Yikes. Kyrgyzstan is very photogenic for the drone. Good on you both for keeping up a good show of it. I have to say I'm really feeling the drama of Kyrgy. I imagine it's a challenge to not drop the ball when everything is going to $#!t.

With all the issues in Kyrgyzstan the two of you faced, I feel you need to go back and have a do over. (and film it!)

Try using a leather tire liner to prevent punctures!!! You can also use bicycle tire tubes in an emergency even if you have to pack an extra deflated tube around it to reduce the space.

The brake master cylinder probably has sediment blocking the feed hole thus not allowing fluid in to replace what's been drained through the bleed screw. To remedy this, disassemble the master then blow compressed air in the reverse direction, bleeding will then be possible, good luck.

Believe me it is tempting to as all those click bait videos or riders that create that content have millions of views.
But we're staying strong for now and trying to make it more about the reality of these trips whilst also showing how anyone can do it. Looking back now its crazy to see how cheap travel can be in some countries.

  • @EireRider.motorcycle.adventure

Part of the adventure is meeting people. It's great people are friendly. I hope to meet people as I further head into Co. Donegal. I'm sure it's a boost when you find some shelter. One of those luxuries when your camping. Glad you managed to get your brakes sorted or half sorted. 🇮🇪🇮🇪

Lived in Kyrgyzstan for 4 yrs. You showcased the country well. But I lament that you did not take the road from Tash Rabat to At-bashy. At-Bashy is the most beautiful valley and mountain range. The view of that range is spectacular. If you guys hit KG again and for all other. Make sure you stop by At-Bashy. Its beautiful. And my favorite place in KG. Cheers!
