Baris CSSSA 2010

Talented high school students from all over California and points beyond learned this piece of Balinese Gamelan during their month long intensive at CalArts. They never played gamelan music before so they needed to learn how to play the instruments and most importantly "dampen" the notes after playing them. The students learned this piece (along with other pieces) by rote, note by note, without notation. This video is from their culmination performance. Hi Novri, yes it does sound different than what you may have heard or what you use when you're dancing Baris. The students performing had never even heard of gamelan or what it was less than one month before this performance. They did pretty good considering that!!! I'm glad you like the way it sounds!!! :-)
