EnerChi: A Survival Story in Shadow
Here is the unedited full version of "EnerChi" the story of my first cancer created for the prestigious COLA grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles which debuted in June of 2010 at California Plaza.

Why do I love to be in Bali? Because I get to play music with my teacher I Wayan Sarga just about every day :-) often at religious ceremonies! This Gamelan Gender Wayang piece, Angkat Sekar Ginotan, is a traveling piece normally played after the first formal meeting in a traditional Balinese wayang kulit shadow play.

Bali & Beyond's performance at the 18th Street Arts Complex in Santa Monica. The piece is a condensed version of Sesapi (Swooping Birds) which is part of Pemungkah, the overture to traditional Mahabarata Wayang Kulit Shadow Play. Also note that almost all of our Gamelan Gender Wayang music comes from the Sukawati tradition, Banjar Babakan style!

Bali & Beyond performed Tulang Lindung (Eel Bones), part of Pemungkah, the overture to traditional Balinese Wayang Kulit Shadow Play at the 18th Street Arts Complex. The sacred ensemble Gamelan Gender Wayang accompanies Mahabarata shadow plays as well as other rites of passage.

I wonder if humans feel attracted to this type of music because it’s like some ancient instinct stuff? Like thousands of years ago when tribes of hunter gatherers would do this did of in some plains. It makes you feel a sense of togetherness. Like safety and comfort within the people. Idk I’m probably just high as shit
This piece holds a huge healing power. I saw it live in a Balinese temple in Ubud, performed by Men. I saw it somewhere else on UA-cam performed by Balinese Male singers & dancers again. I now I see it here performed by Western Men & Women... and it still holds and vibrates that healing power. The power is in the sound, voice, movement and intention. Best detach from labels everywhere else it's possible, if you feel like this should belong only in certain places. Respectfully. I enjoyed this video very much 😊 thank you!

I absolutely love this interpretation of this piece; it is virtuosic and the performers play with such skill and speed that it sounds like they're moving with single unity and clarity. It is a work of absolute joy and beauty and remains one of my favourite ever. I wonder at it and I want to emulate it. Congratulations!

Not sure what you mean. Kecak is a ritual chant from Bali, used in prior times. It doesn’t STAND for anything but itself and cultural significance.
@@mariabodmannread my comment again, the beginning of the video says 'california state summer school of the arts, or CSSA, which is what I mentioned in my comment. I know what Kecak is. I went to CalArts (i actually took the Kecak and different gamelan classes there) and a lot of my friends did CSSSA, but i just realized I never knew what it stood for.
goatisdemen ah ok, this was a performance by the 2010 CSSSA Music students. It was part of the California State Summer School For The Arts (CSSSA) while my partner Cliff and I taught there. So Kecak was a part of it but kecak doesn’t stand for CSSSA. Hope that’s clear now. 😀
