Full Disclosure: I occasionally take on freelance work at Sonicware on an hourly rate producing synth & sample sound design, beta testing, checking English text, video manuals etc. This video wasn't paid for directly but as a result of my work with Sonicware it is marked as Paid Promotion
So, I midi modded my Volca Modular this week and I've been playing around with it on my 'Synth Tray 2' so this is the result. Nothing too fancy, I'm just sequencing notes from the Sonicware SmplTrek but it's actually possible to sequence all the knobs that are clear via a set of midi CC's. The SmplTrek can sequence 4 custom midi CC's on it's midi track, so I must try that at some point.
The mod is a 'USBtribe' mod and i grabbed it from eBay. Very good for £30. It's solder-less and it fits inside the case, although only just! It took a few pieces of tape in the correct places to ensure the wires weren't in the way of the screws as I re-assembled it. That took quite a few attempts! Edit: You will need a drill and the correct size drill bit to mount the 3.5mm midi sockets in the back of the Volca, apart from that you just need the right screwdrivers. Here it is:

The Liven XFM is being used like a multitimbral virtual analog here too, I created a set of presets to make this as easy as possible which are available below. They can be edited as shown in the video also linked below. www.dropbox.co...
    • How to use the SONICWA...
I sampled a pad from the XFM into the SmplTrek because the XFM only has one filter per track so playing new notes resets the filter envelope, not great for pads. Once it's sampled this isn't a problem anymore. The SmplTrek also handles drums and plays a chopped up cassette about computer hardware

Thanks man. I was super lazy and just used the bit at the start on this though 😄 plenty more to dig into though!

    Interesting.
I've been wondering what's involved with the VM midi mod. If there's no soldering, how does it connect?
And is drilling the hole in the case a nice to have or essential? How hard is it to mod the case without damaging it?

The one of the circuit boards that comes with the mod has little tiny spring loaded pins on the end that are gold plated. When the board is secured in place these sit against the contacts on the board to make a connection. It uses a couple of the screws that are there already to hold it in place. Actually the first time I turned it on to test it didn't work as I hadn't done the screws up tight enough. I'll link to the item below so you can have a look. Mine is the same as this but they must have updated it a little as the ribbon cable is longer now so it's easier to get the board to fit inside.
As for drilling holes in the case, I'd say it's essential yes. There's no other way to get the wires out of the device, even through the holes in the battery compartment. You're only drilling into the lower part of the case which doesn't contain any circuitry once it's been dismantled so it's not as risky as it sounds, You just need to make sure you get the holes low enough so there's enough space between the top of the socket on the main board of the Volca Modular so that it will still go back together. Quite how difficult you'll find it is down to your skill level really, but don't attempt it if you have no experience with this kind of thing.
By the way, I couldn't find any instructions for this mod despite there being a website dedicated to USBTribe. I'm sure the seller would have provided something if asked but I just modded it based on the photos in the listing

Very satisfying mix of sounds, and that melody sounds great with the delay! Nice mod, too!

Thank you. Yeah many more options to explore with the midi modded VMod, loads to try 😁

Modular midi moded? How? You don't use a midi to CV as I see...

I bought a solder free mod from eBay and installed that. It was a bit fiddly to get in the case but worth the effort. It does involve drilling holes in the case btw. Here's the listing: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154659646586?itmmeta=01J62HNPPB65Q8N6Y4XT4WW2V2&hash=item24026eec7a:g:y5oAAOSwX-BfxhPT

@@ChrisLodyMusic ok ! I didn't know it exist, thanx, I've just bought a modular, didn't received it yet, and planned to play/sequence it thru my MPC's CV outputs , but this midi mod let free the 2 patching points needed for external control... Interesting....

Great stuff. Is there a way on Smpltrek to launch only one track out of next scene or you always have to select the whole scene and quickly turn of all the track you don't want?

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  6 місяців тому +1

Thank you. No there's no way to do that currently. I spoke to Sonicware recently though and they said they have an update planned for the SmplTrek though no schedule or feature list for it yet. They will take user ideas into consideration so if you like you could submit the idea to the support page on their website

Yeah it's not expensive at £30. I've used the Volca Modular a lot so adding midi to it was well worth it. Forgot to mention you will need to drill the case to get the sockets in, apart from that screwdrivers is all you need

@@joeyrossiter3763 unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any videos of how to install the mod. I did it just based on the photos in the listing, but I have quite a bit of experience with that kind of thing so it wouldn't be as easy for some people

Yes I must do that at some point. I'm not very well practiced with loopers though to be honest so I need time to get good with it 😄
