Vampires tells the story of a Vampire Hunter recovering from an ambush that killed his entire team, a vengeful vampire slayer must retrieve an ancient Catholic relic that, should it be acquired by vampires, will allow them to walk in sunlight.
The film was directed by John Carpenter and based on a book by John Steakley. Vampires stars James Woods as Jack Crow, Daniel Baldwin as Anthony Montoya, Sheryl Lee as Katrina, Thomas Ian Griffith as Jan Valek, Maximilian Schell as Cardinal Alba, Tim Guinee as Father Adam Guiteau,
Gregory Sierra as Father Giovanni, Mark Boone Junior as Catlin, Henry Kingi as Anthony, David Rowden as Bambi and Thomas Rosales Jr. as Ortega.
Check out this first time watching horror reaction video for Vampires, and see if I can make it as a horror movie rookie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

Awesome movie
Well i mean it was made in 1998 some different movie was like Vampire or Skinwalker or NightStalker lived Western Northern Eastern Southern States of New Mexico Arizona's True Story some maybe that's why they come in the day in the night time 🌙
"This looks like it should be a Bon Jovi music video." Funny you mention that... He actually appears in the sequel.
"Vampires in the desert, ok." Yeah, there's a part of vampire lore that says that they are terrified of running water, and cannot knowingly, consciously cross any moving water (rivers and streams are out, but lakes, swamps and ponds, standing water, are fine)...So a desert environ might well be an ideal location for them to flourish.
You use bullets to stagger or stun the beast...no long-term effects, but it may afford you a momentary opening to turn things around. Delaying actions are effective actions, if you are still alive at the end.
John carpenter always wanted to make Westerns...so this movie is is heavily inspired by old Westerns just like ghosts of mars.
Jen you should check out "Near Dark"(1987) it is one of the best vampire movies! It's one of Kathryn Bigelow's early films, beautifully filmed with Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen playing 2 of the coolest vampires of all time.
I liked Near Dark a lot! ROFL I had a major crush on Jenny Wright, and hunted down every role I could see her in...alas, after seeng "I, Madman" I was forced to recognize that she was a B-movie actress. I really would have liked to see her excel beyond that.
Definitely. That’s an awesome movie. Hudson and Bishop as vampires.
Thank you!
I was digging through my brain trying to remember that title.
80s vampires was the best, but Vampires had a similar style.
Lost Boys country style. "Finger licking good!"
Certain vampire bites kiil, certain ones turn the victim to a vampire, and certain ones sort of half-turn, creating from the victim a devoted protector.
I actually like this movie because it takes what we think we know of vampires and turns it upside down.
"This guys makes Spike look like the easter bunny" Those are big words. Subscribed to your channel. I love this movie so so much.
That element about the vampires emerging from the ground is interesting because in the novel a vampire has to sleep on their native soil.
Yeah that was interesting, and in Nosferatu he travels with the soil in his coffin
Makes the vampires even scarier imo, since you can never really know where they are
Interesting that you mentioned Bon Jovi,he starred in the first of two sequel/follow up(as a vampire hunter). Each one deals with vampires in a different part of the world.
The telepathic link business was put forth in the "Dracula" novel. I don't know of it before in any folklore, but there's so much different folklore out there, it seems impossible to say whether some tradition may not be valid somewhere.
Vampires was more of a western than a horror movie, Jen. The western is a common theme in John Carpenter's films, as he was heavily inspired by Howard Hawks and Sergio Leone.
Carpenter tried to be Howard Hawks, it's just that he started to make movies during the wrong time for westerns...
and yes, this is like one of Howard Hawks westerns but with vampires, with deconstructed vampires of course... this one is a firm candidate to be the craziest Carpenter movie
LOL your Inigo Montoya gag was funny...but as someone who's lived in the American Southwest, I can submit that Montoya is among the top ten, possibly top 5 most common hispanic names encountered. I assume there have been many very affluent Montoyas through history.
The stuntmen definitely worked overtime in this
I love this film, maybe because I got to see it at the cinema at a late night showing. A bunch of us had had a few drinks as well and we all had a great time shouting at the character on the screen. I still enjoy it when watching it on DVD now. It wasn't well received when it came out but I think it's become a lot more popular over time as people see it for the fun, action/horror it is rather than expecting another Halloween or The Thing, etc.
I like this movie, I consider it Carpenter's last good movie. The cast makes a big difference. For comparison watch Prince of Darkness and imagine how much better that movie would be with a cast like the one in this movie.
Saw it in the theater when it came out, and I've loved it ever since. John Carpenter is simply the best.
He’s so great! I’ve really enjoyed his films so far, thanks for watching!
James Woods is a great actor, however I like how they prograde him in Family Guy. Another Great movie that woods plays a minor character in is Scary Movie 2 where he parody's the father from "The Exorcist."
Lol you mentioned it was cheesy that Baldwin's character was falling for the girl when before he was an asshole, but I think it's just because she's a vampire and when she bit him, he slowly fell under her control.
I’ve seen this movie more times than I can count and I never thought about it that way! Makes sense.
This is probably my favorite vampire movie...
James Woods makes this movie absolutely funny his dialogue is outrageous
James Woods in a great actor. You should check him out in Stephen King’s Cats Eye and in the movie Salvador. And , also Videodrome if you haven’t already.
I’m digging your channel.
I like that you go in blind and fresh into the movie.
I don’t know why so many reactors have such a problem with that. Many can’t help themselves and read a summary just before they watch the movie.
What is the f-ing point of that?!
A spooky horror movie for the month you may not have seen.
“Santa Sangre” from1989.
A unique spooky film that’d make for a great reaction!
What..., The Magnificent Seven Meets Dracula? Lots of ideas already used in other vampire flicks. I thought vampires turned into bats when they flew around. The telepathy idea is used in various vampire films too. I think I'll stick with Jean Rollin (Shivers Of The Vampire), Jose Larraz (Vampyres) and of course Hammer for my vampire movies. It was alright, but it's all been done before.🦇
'Ohhhhhhhh My! You are going to have me saying that, it's too funny. Anyway, The Lost Boys, is a great movie, a lot of fun to see if haven't yet.
You should check out The Lost Boys and Coppala's Dracula as well! Also the Fright Night remake with Colin Farrell is a fun time too.
At 12:11 James woods not spader. Pretty cool 90's 🎥 though. Thank you for the throwback! 😁
The guy playing the young priest was in Blade. He was bitten but didn't change into a vampire, he changed more into a Ghoul. Oh I almost forgot for another Vampire movie go check out I think it's call Daylights with Ethan Hawke and Sam Neil. And you can't go wrong with The Lost Boys.
8:04 I've never felt closer to you, Jen!
James Woods, the thinking man's Nick Cage. Or the other way round. not sure, hoenstly.
Check out the book, the book has a lot more to it. The story is a lot better and a lot more involved. I think the vampire that killed his team gets killed a third of the way through the book. So there a lot more plot and story.
Yeah the book is better. I really like the hunting vampires as a money making scheme. Kill the vampires and take whatever art etc they have stashed in their lair.
Thus the hunters aversion to just nailing the doors shut and burning the building down at Noon.
The book by John steakly that these films are based titled vampire$ authored by John steakly is a audible book now.
The bullets they were firing wear normal bullets shooting them stuns them that’s the problem
Sun light burns them to death
Staking them kills them partially then you destroy completely by burning them completely but the head must not be attached to the body heart must be destroyed and the body be destroyed by fire or the sun
Ruthless ubervamp Makes Spike look like Easter bunny lol
"Cheese n' Rice"... lol. Jen's so Canadian.
If you enjoy John Carpenter films; you night want to check out his Sci fi film Starman. If you have not already, check out Fright Night the 1985 version.
It's a great satirical, action horror movie. James Woods was pretty much perfect for the role of Jack the slayer team leader with his dry and sardonic, but slightly over the top wit, which makes him a shoo-in to be one of Carpenter's Antiheroes (e.g., Napoleon Wilson, Snake Pliskin, MacReady, Jack Burton, John Nada, etc.) delivered with a few tongue in cheek machismo quips here and there to keep the violence and horror from getting depressing. I also like how it's a bit of a Western in style. The protagonists are a bit of gun slingers, along with a later to be gun slinging preacher. I think it's one of the better Vampire flicks. John Carpenter works his own fingerprint into the genre nicely. It's pretty much what you'd hope for when John Carpenter covers the subject of vampires: horrifying and violent but fun, witty, campy and a bit over the top at the same time. Has that great balance to make it a movie that you're glad you watched it, and by the end of the movie you can't help but be a bit floored and smiling as the end credits begin rolling.
Traditionally, a person that is turned into a vampire, is not 'truly' or 'permanently' a vampire, until they drink blood for the first time. If their 'sire' (the vampire that turned them) is slain before they feed on blood, they can be restored to their human state.
@17:20 "Vampire Garden"! That should be the name of your band if you ever start one!!
Enjoyed this one. Cheers!
Haha deal! Thanks for watching!
The older a vampire is the more powers they have valik is super powered his newly turned they have the strength of five power lifters.
The team when they raided the nest except crow and Montoya where wearing armor
You should totally check out the 1985 vampire movie, Fright Night.
I’ll add it to the list! Thanks for the suggestion!
I’ll also add the remake! Still scary in my opinion 🤣
You would probably enjoy Ghosts of Mars, have a good one.
A favorite. Good pick.
It's funny you mention Bon Jovi because good old Jon stars in the sequel to this movie.
Boone played Bobby Elvis on Sons.
Terry silver has changed
I know a few good vampire movies from dusk to dawn, interview with a vampire, Queen of the damned , The Lost Boys, Vamp (that kind of more comedy), Vampire University, both Blade movies those are a few that i can think of right now
The original novel Vampire$ is mainly a response to every dumb vampire hunter in every vampire movie. It's much closer to the first part of the movie (the full team using tactics and technology) and takes place in the author's native Dallas.
James Woods ad libbed pretty much all of his lines. There was a script, he just didn't like it.
There are two sequels to this.
Also, if you like James Woods, check out Best Seller. Woods plays a hitman trying to get a cop to write his story.
What's the name to the sequel to this ?
@@patrickbell5875 There's;
Vampires: Los Muertos (2002)
and;
Vampires: The Turning (2004)
I've never seen the last movie and I really don't remember much about the second one. I'm just going by what the IMDb lists.
i was searching for a clip of the machine gun mag dump neck cauterization scene and i noticed the Say Anything shirt so i had to stop and give like. despite my pseudo bohemian appearance
Haha! Amazing! Thank you!
Please react to my favorite vampire movies
Near Dark (1987)
The Lost Boys (1987)
Bram Stroker's Dracula (1992)
Interview With The Vampire (1994)
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
30 Days Of Night (2007)
Let The Right One In (2008)

you werent kidding about getting the names mixed up. You called him james spader when they were yelling at each other in the parking lot..LOL. also you should check out the series THE GATES. bout a community of humans/vampires/werewolves all living in a gated community.
Hey Jen,
This is a Carpenter's movie, so, watch it again next year .
Try Fright Night (1985) more Cheese & Rice, ;) thanks for Your channel 👌
I’ll add it to the list! Thanks for the suggestion!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen This is absolutly middle eighties Cheese oh My .. old perfect stance. Sur creepy as You like 👌
For sur, You will find , And that's the name of the movie, :)
The movie Priest also has an interesting and original take on vampires.
The book is so different and so much better!
This is generally considered one of the worst scripts Carpenter had to direct.
Saw this when it came out thought it was good. The ending was a bit meh but I did enjoy the movie and thought it was pretty cool how they hunted vampires.
About the novel Vampir$ and this movie. The part up until after the motel attack is close to the novel. After that not the same. The church sponsored hunting group at the same. There are more characters in the book and some good ones. I suggest you read or get the audio book.
It's not the best vampire movie, but it's fun. I like it.
oh yes I almost forgot another one all of the underworld movies
I haven’t seen Underworld 😬
@@ReelReviewsWithJen really you would love those movies I've seen just about all of them and they are great movies especially if you like movies with vampires in them along side with lycans Lycans and werewolves are two different creatures but both creatures of the night
you should checkout the horror movie Warlock (1989)
Why would vampires go where they get so much sun never understood that and you might have seen the Baldwin brother on nothing but trouble dont know his first name either
I still have this on VHS. The big draw for me was Sheryl Lee (Katrina), a.k.a. Laura Palmer from "Twin Peaks". I no longer like James Woods due to his right wing politics and never cared much for him as an actor either. Daniel Baldwin has been in a few well known films but mostly b-movies it seems, the 1993 version of "Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman", "Bodily Harm" (1995), "Love Kills" (1998) 1 of his 8 movies in 1998 and "Steeling Candy" (2002).
Beats being shot by Alec Baldwin 🤷♂️
Have you watched Ghosts of Mars yet?
I adore John Carpenter, but this is easily my least favourite of his movies (here's your silver medal, Village of the Damned). Carpenter was thinking about quitting film-making just before he was offered the gig, and it shows. The dialogue is atrocious. The characters act idiotically. Woods' character is an asshole, and feels as phony as the middle-aged tough guy fantasy that he is. It's the work of a tired director working from a weak script.
But then, I'm also the guy who will go to bat for the (very flawed) Ghosts of Mars which, in its sheer madness, feels like it stepped out of 1983.
"A" master, not The master.
😊
Love it...this is one of my favorite vampire movies. James Woods is fantastic.
Cheese & Rice, Hi Jen, Cool Reaction, How About Reacting To 1987's A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
@@spongebobandplanktonshould2920 Okay, thanks
That vampire is so hot lol
I like the vampire lore and vampire hunter methods in this one, but the plot itself is mediocre. Good reaction 😁
Thank you so much! Yeah not my favourite John Carpenter film :(
It's halfway down there on his filmography but I really had a good time with this movie when it came out, it definitely fits in with that group of fun vampire movies like Lost Boys and From Dusk till Dawn
FINALLY!!! Someone does John Carpenter's Vampires!! That's all I'm saying. Watching now
I wasn’t a big fan of this movie, in part because I was a huge fan of the original novel “Vampire$” by John Steakley. It’s a cliche but it’s true: “The book was better…”
Thomas Ian Griffith made such an awesome vampire as Valek.
He was so creepy! So well done, thanks for watching!
This isn't thought of as one of Carpenters "peak" films... the "golden age" of John Carpenter is arguably from ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (1976) to THEY LIVE (1988). JC Vampires is not the worst one he did, but I saw it theater and I dont feel the need to see it ever again. btw, if you wanna see where Carpenter got his start, check out his micro sci-fi film "DARK STAR" (early 70s).. It was not only Carpenters first film, but his creative partner on it was Dan O'Bannon, who co-wrote ALIEN, TOTAL RECALL, and wrote and directed one of the best zombie movies ever made, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985)
The master vampire, Valek, is played by Thomas Ian Griffith, who played Terry Silver, the evil Karate master in The Karate Kid Part III. Katrina is played by Sheryl Lee, who played Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks.
As to the rest of the cast, I remember that the infected girl is famous for her role as the ill-fated Laura Palmer, in the t.v. series Twin Peaks, and (more importantly to me) the title role in the 1999 suspense/dark comedy "Angel's Dance." Also, the surviving sidekick and her 'protector' was one of the famous Baldwin brothers...Whom I remember fondly from his role in "Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man," a very stylistic action film.
John Carpenter described this film as "A Howard Hawks movies but with Vampires".
I kinda like this movie, but also it's kinda bad. It clearly wants you to think James Woods is cool and he's just very not cool.
Near Dark (1987) is another western-inflected vampire movie, and I think a much better one.
The mom jeans aren't helping
A 12 book (short books) series called Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan is a young adult vampire series. There's good and bad vampires in it. They made a movie from it called The Vampire's Assistant with John C Riley, Salma Hayek, Willem Dafoe, Ken Watanabe, and Josh Hutchinson. I'm not sure if I'd consider it a horror movie though despite it being about vampires.
I liked the movie, but I don't think it did particularly well in the money making department. Would have been cool to see the rest of the story come out, but I don't think they will make anymore. But you might could check it out of your interested in it. It has its own set of vampire rules/lore as well.
Just imagine this movie with Mr. Miyagi - Okinawan Vampire Slayer.
Another vampire movie you should react to is "Queen Of The Damned"
Funny you mention Bon Jovi, there's a sequel to this starring Jon Bon Jovi
Vampires is a much better movie than Ghosts of Mars
This should have been a Nic Cage movie
Please react to Solomon Kane 2009!
there are a couple of sequels !
This is one of my faves 👌 ❤ 😍
i like james woods in cop
If you’re a fan of Carpenter, you’ve got to watch his movies with Kurt Russell, Escape From New York, Escape From LA, and Big Trouble in Little China (since you’ve already seen The Thing).
A good vampire movie similar to this one that came out before it is Near Dark, definitely worth a watch if you can find it.
The monologue in the van is James Wood's best piece hahaha
While there are still some enjoyable elements to this film (mainly the opening scene and James Woods playing a total dick,) this is when Carpenter pretty much gave up.
Yeah definitely not my favourite John Carpenter film :(
