Chance for Glory is a monster of a win-con in Boros commanders (like Aurelia the Warleader) who give you extra rounds of combat. I know some commander decks that can get three or four rounds of combat off on a single turn. Now double that...

Temporal Extortion definitely has increased value in Commander games. With long games and multiple opponents, the cost and downsides are somewhat mitigated. In the early game it can give you an edge when people don’t want to lose 15 or 20 life, and in the late game it can help you close gaps. Not a huge bump, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Gonti's Aether Heart I feel like is one of those cards that for me embodies that disclaimer at the top of the video, that some of these cards have homes in EDH. In my Tawnos and Urza decks, because there's so many ways to both reduce artifact mana cost and create and copy artifacts, I can reliably drop GAH and have it fire off on the same turn, as well as recurring it back with Karn the Great Creator, but it's definitely very dependent on the way the deck has been built so I can understand why it's on this list.

I think chance for glory is actually a very cool card. There are lots of times, especially in Commander, that you can garauntee a win for yourself with one turn.
You can also get around "losing the game" Lich Mastery decks love this card.
I think in time this card will show it's power. It's cheap enough to combine with sweep, and you can play stuff like seize the day on your extra turn. You can even use Sundail of the infinite to avoid losing if you fuck up.
Situational, but it's very easy to control the situations the card is good, it's in colors that have no other access to this effect, and it's dirt cheap.

    • @robspear03
      @robspear03 5 років тому

Once again: You have to build around the card for it to be good.
If a card necessitates a build-around to be effective, or in the case of CfG to NOT DIE, it is not a good card.
You can argue all you want, but it doesnt change the text box. You either have an enchantment in play or a 4/4 artifact creature or a 1cmc white instant that says "i cant lose the game". Now, with that extra turn, have you assemble yet another combo? A board of lethal attackers? Thats a dedication of one or more card slots that could have just been a Nexus, Temporal Trespass or Part the Waterveil.
If it requires moving parts, its not efficient. Fun? Sure. But dont confuse "fun" with good.

Chantal Beck The argument that a card isn’t good if you need to build around it, is terrible.
      Here are a few cards you need to build around, tell me if they’re good or not;
      -Death’s Shadow
      -Tarmogoyf
      -Lantern of Insight
      -Grapeshot
      -Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis

      -Thalia’s Lieutenant
      -The Tron lands
      -Mox Opal
      -Splinter Twin
      -Protean Hulk
      -Amulet of Vigor
      -Ad Nauseam
      -Summoner’s Pact
      -Candelabra of Tawnos
      -Scapeshift
      -Devoted Druid
      -Delver of Secrets
I’ll leave it there. Clearly there are a lot of cards that are good despite requiring you to build around them. Also a lot of these cards have quite an underwhelming effect when compared with an extra turn. Sometimes cheap effects can be worth the required building around, especially when there are a lot of ways to synergize with the cards you are using to build around.

    9. Second Chance 140/125170 0%
    10. Temporal Extortion 1001/123923 1%
(The second column is the decks that DO play the card over the decks that COULD play the card.)
Timestream Navigator and Chance for Glory score far better than Second Chance.
In fact, Chance for Glory is played in conjunction with Sunforger to get infinite turns, and just last weak I lost to an Inalla deck because: it played the Navigator, then got an extra turn with the token, then got another extra turn with the original and, by the time they had finished, got yet another turn with a timewalk effect they've drawn meanwhile. I've conceded on the spot.
Magistrate's Scepter and Gonti's Aether Heart are a tie, but I know the Scepter can go infinite with stuff like Contagion Engine and some untapper, while I don't know any combo with the Heart.
Surprisingly, Stitch in Time scores quite high and I think it's because it fits quite well in any Zndrsplt & Okaun deck.

I agree that time stream navigator is a very fragile creature and fragile combo, but it is in blue, the control color... Depending on who your playing against, they may over think the situation and trip over themself.
Like, one time I told the table my time stream navigator combo takes 14 mana to go off. They for whatever reason let the navigator live, then let me get to 14 mana, then held nothing up when it came to my turn... The only other blue player had just blown his last card in hand countering a different game winning spell which wasn't going to win yet. So I explained the combo to them, told them there was nothing they could do, and told them sooner or later, I'd draw the win condition I needed, and we should move on to the next game. Then there was this other time a guy teferi's protection himself to not die to targeted effects, but still lost due to me taking infinite turns with the navigator and global effects.
I stopped playing that deck afterwards...

10: Add with Wound Reflection, or similar effect. In commander, it's usually 10 life or more..
9: Veldaken Orrery, any form of flash. If run with black, can use a card like ad naseum prior.
8: Use ANY card that says you can't lose the game, once end step ends, the effect fizzles out completely and your creatures are still indestructible.
7: Is kind of crap, but can make uncounterable and give haste.
4: Use American quarters after 1980, it's nearer 70% due to alloy layering. Near 80-90 if the 2000 state series.

Timestream Navigator is actaully a win con in my Inalla commander deck, but you have stated in several videos that commander is a format where a lot more cards can find a home. You can slap down the creature and immediately take an extra turn thanks to Inalla's eminence ability making a token copy of it with haste. Add a Crystal Shard to this interaction to keep putting the original copy of the card back into your hand, and you now have the ability to take infinite turns.

Well.....no temporal extortion is pretty good. I run it in my brown leafs deck and being able to half your opponent's life to edge your board state into lethal territory or taking an extra turn to develop a board is ussualy a win win in any situation.
And let's say worse case scenario you drop it on your 4th turn then your opponent picks extra turn instead of half you still get an extra land, card draw, and any upkeep effects. It's literally never a losing situation.
Even if your opponent is at a low life like 4 and they take the half that puts them in rang for any kind of minor instant damage spells or effect. Or if your both are at a peak board state that 2 damage can mean the diffrence.

the reprint of magistrates scepter makes a lot of sense if you consider that war of the spark was build with a ton of spells and creatures that can proliferate. So once you have the first counter on it, you can get the others for free, effectively getting you a timewalk for 7 mana you can use multiple times. I tried playing around with it for a while. I could not get it to give me infinite turns consistently enough to make it worthwhile for a combo deck, but it gave me quite a few extra turns and wins.

Great List, I had no idea Second Chance was even a card. Magistrate Scepter though does have a very powerful spot in a very specific Commander deck: Tawnos. Aside from the obvious synergy of taking two extra turns, you also run basically everything good that cares about charges counters like Lux Cannon, Riptide Replicator, the relevant shrines, even Titan Forge and Conversion Chamber (all which also work great with Tawons), mix in the good proliferate cards like Contagion Engine, Inexorable tide, Flux Channeler, Energy Chamber, Coretapper, plus Sword of Truth & Justice and it's super easy to go infinite.

Sol Ring, Everflowing Chalice just a few examples alongside the Urza lands. Maybe even mix in a little Darksteel for repeated attacks? Cuz yeah an extra turn means another chance to attack and then use the Scepter all over again and against Darksteel your opponent will run out of creatures to wall you with eventually right?

I mean, I know you said "some of these see play in Commander" but they're still bad, but I think the commander utility of some of these is being underestimated. Like, I run Timestream Navigator in my Inalla deck. It's really funny because then she's just an (expensive, I admit) time walk with another one on board waiting to go off. Or Magosi. In my Teferi superfriends deck there are definitely times when I'm sitting on a bunch of counterspells or an activated Teferi ult and some mana, and am okay with the idea of letting my opponent take another go to bank a turn.

In terms of commander, Search the City also definitely gets #1 cause you need 5 basic lands and then ways to enable 5 land drops in a single turn just to get your extra turn. • @juancasanova8434
    @juancasanova8434 Рік тому

I've only played MTGA so I just learned about Magosi, but it does seem to have potential for me, in instant decks. The main issue is that you also skip your untap phase; but the key is that you can play the skip ability at instant speed.
Picture the following: I kept most of my mana untapped to counter some stuff from the opponent and/or destroy some stuff they played or something with instants in my hand. They didn't play anything worth my mana, so I have a bunch of unspent mana that's about to go to waste, and all my spells are instants. I'll just activate the ability on my opponent's end step, skip my upcoming turn, and since I still have mana from the fact I didn't do anything last turn, I still have the ability to counter or play other instants during your turn. And now I have an extra turn for free that I can use later on when I have the ability to do something with it.
It's not broken, but it does seem quite useful for instant decks as an extra threat and another way to make use of mana you keep to respond to situations with instants.

I've run several of these in EDH. Chance for Glory in Aurelia, Timestream Navigator in a few (it clones well) and Stitch in Time in my Melek deck.
Of those, Chance for Glory was actually consistently a game-winner for me, as my Boros deck has lots of creatures that created more creatures on attack, so getting two turns in a row would often be enough to seal the deal on multiple opponents. I would usually play it sorcery speed before playing my own board wipe to clear out blockers.
Stitch in time admittedly isn't super strong, but I cut my better extra turn cards as they made my Melek Deck unpleasant to play against. With all the copying, Stitch in Time still usually nets me about one turn per play though, but it is decidedly outclassed by other Time Walks, and wouldn't be in the deck if it wasn't Izzet flavored.
Timestream Navigator usually is pretty janky though...

I was thinking Wormfang Manta might be good with a card that flickers until the next end step like Roon of the Hidden Realm, flickering it on the end step so you always end the turn with the take the extra turn trigger to take infinite turns, at the price that if someone kills the wormfang then you're basically skipping a future turn for each turn you took.
But it turns out, that's not how skipping turns work. It doesn't remove your next turn from the turn order the moment the trigger resolves, it sticks around and waits until your next turn actually happens and removes it then

Skip an early when the opponent has little to no board, and you get to take an extra turn whenever it's more convenient (turns in which you will have much more mana than the turn you skipped). That can be a bomb in the right conditions. If you draw it late, it's just a land that enters tapped, a slight downside.

While also running anointed processions and many of the embalm creatures. I could make Gideon a creature to helm him and make more Gideons, or combo off with Timestream to win the game. Having a emblemed Gideon plus the navigator combo meant i couldn't lose to deck out, and many times it would come down to simply smashing through with too many Gideons, locking red out of the game with them, or slamming the helm down on a lyra and going the face beat plan. I wish I had been able to play the deck more in it's era. I just didn't have the funds to make those trips to bigger tournaments. I got top 8 in three different Pptq's

Majority of his top 10s are based on EDH statistics drawn from deck submission.
Your subjectively driven comment does not change the text box on these cards.
      They are bad.

So do play Wormfang Manta with Torpor Orb, but not with Yarok, the Desecrated. Okay I'll try to keep that straight

I made a wormfang manta combo deck torpor orb or the clones wormfang manta and eldrazi displacer for inf turns it worked a few times but super inconsistent

I'd say Magistrate's Scepter can be pretty good in a dedicated proliferate deck. Even though it looks below curve, it compensates by not destroying or exiling itself, so you can go infinite with it fairly easily compared to other Time Walks.

I don’t really disagree with its place on this list, but I personally use second chance in an edh deck for its potential to infinitely combo off of form of the dragon and things like mistveil plains after enduring ideal, so it does have some.. very niche use. It’s one of the more flimsy wincons in the deck, but it’s fun, it works, and the deck generally needs a few ways to win so it isn’t screwed if just one wincon is out of reach

Nope, if you win the game with it most time you had won it without it
And often it gives you card disadvantage because it is on your hand without any use

The card has a special place in Magic it can be strong played it in limited had some great risky wins throught it.
And i saw some Decks in Standart who used it to great effect, but Most of the time it is just a win harder card

@@redstonepro5412 yeah ofc, but atleast wanted to make a point for the card.
Which is a wonderful word play, as a card in german it translates into smth. like: "Betting everything on one card" and that is more alligned with the gameplay of the card

Chance for Glory is a three cost "double the damage you have on the board" if you play it alone.
Plus, you're playing Boros. You should have enough removal between white and red to blow through for lethal in two turns.

Honestly now that Archfiend of Despair is a card, Temporal Extortion now reads "your opponent may choose to either give you an extra turn, or lose the game at the end of your turn"

Magistrates scepter is op in a proliferate deck because if you are proliferating 3 times each turn then you get infinite extra turns if you play it right (you will run out of dice before you run out of cards)
