Seventy three years ago, a consecration like the one in Ayodhya stirred up a storm with some calling it an erosion of India's secular credentials and others hailing it as the restoration of a broken link from the past. In Episode 1384 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta looks back at that epoch-making event & the lessons it held for Indians irrespective of who they pray to.

I remember visiting #Ayodhya about 15 years ago. Reaching the city was one challenge and getting a glimpse of the idol was another. Seeing #RamLalla in a tent, on a mountain of debris, through an iron cage was not just underwhelming but it was serious blow to my sense of being a Hindu. We know that the consecration ceremony is political but this does not undermine the fact this is a big moment for all Hindus around the world. Like me, millions of Hindus worldwide are today proud of their religious, and ethnic identity. This is one way to preserve the world's oldest surviving civilization, revive a city, and to create economic opportunities. Our celebrations should neither be seen as an expression of triumph nor as expression of religious supremacy. We are over joyed for finally being recognized.

Back in the late 1980s, I was posted in a government institution. In those days serial Ramayana was screened for an hour every Sunday morning. During times of heavy workload, because of the added work schedules, the institution worked on Sundays of some weeks. On those Sundays, I recall, the staff wanted an hour’s break between 09.30 - 11.00 AM to watch the serial Ramayana. I believe the whole nation came to a standstill during the screening. BJP etc. was not even on the horizon during that period.

You will realise why the Congress is like that in 20 years time. The precedent has been set that one party through the threat of force can overpower the state and make a one-sided decision in its own favour. But there are more issues in India that just Hindu-Muslim. They are fought in languages and geographies that you don't know about they are extremely consequential to the continued existence of republic of India. Manipur is just the start of that catastrophe. What if the wound of the past is still festering in the new generation of Indians. The congress tried to not even let us know that we were wounded by manipulating the history that was taught to all Indians . Wounds of the past are opened all the time whether it be caste, language politics or Gujarat 2002, Godse. People go into to past to talk about Hindu destruction of Buddhist and Jain temples. The only time the past must be concealed is when it comes to Hindu concerns. This ignorance of majority is viewed as modernity and secularism. Caste and language division is called “social justice”. These same hypocrites will then tell you how democracy works and lecture you on economics even though we stayed stagnant until 90s. They blame Nehru’s failed policies on Hindus by calling it “Hindu rate of growth” not Nehru’s rate of growth. Then Hindus get mad at all this hypocrisy and contempt and our reaction is called “religious politics”.

There is one crucial difference between Somnath and Ayodhya: there was no mosque on Somnath. If there were, reconstructing it would not have been as easy. So, yes, there is some parallel with the Shree Ram temple, but it is even more significant. Second, the mistake Shekhar made is that India was not a 'secular' country by any means then; the word was added by an unconstitutional parliament under Indira Gandhi much latter. Please correct these mistakes. BTW, even after adding that word, India is still not a 'secular' country, as the Indian constitution has different laws for people based on their religion. That is anything but secular. You may repeat the word a thousand times, but unless you enact laws to uphold it, it is a farce only.

It is quite ironic that muslim leaders keep insisting on holding control of mosques in kashi and varanasi where even they acknowledge that hindus temples were desecrated to construct mosques. Yet secularism applies only one way in terms of accommodating minority interest while completely crushing the emotions of majority. The best solution was to hand over the two remaining historical structures at kashi and mathura

It's hilarious that well fed, well heeled Hindus like you, who have access to huge resources, and the freedom to worship the way you want cry so much tears over being victims. Simple reason hindu nationalism is today gaining ground is because the old mldel failed to deliver. If nehruvian secularism or the socialism of 1990s would have given growth rather than license raj and caste divide people would have supported the model. Development is the core of legitimacy, if any model fails to give development it sooner rather than later losses legitimacy. Hindutva will flourish till the time india maintains highblevel of growth it is for opposition to come with better economic models to enable india to flourish. If you plan to highlight states like bihar, west bengal, etc forget defeating bjp but if you can popularise tamil nadu then there is strong chance of revival. Lastly, let's not excessively be sad while secularism has suffered some bit by and large indian ethos teach us to respect other religions and this is a tide that will pass like ms gandhi's emergency.

Hindus never attack others, they always see one god (PARAMAATMA) in many .. This was missed by Congress party and took different path of appeasement politics (of Muslims/minorities for votes) and NOT willing to (even now) change it's attitude towards Hindus/Hinduism. This speech offers valuable insight into the complex history of cultural polarization in India. While the current Modi administration faces accusations of dividing the nation along religious lines, the truth is that previous governments have suppressed India's foundational cultural fabric. As we reflect on India's past and work towards a more unified future, it is important not to oversimplify or lay blame solely on any one leader or party. Let's acknowledge hard truths - blacking out this speech from history texts is a travesty of free speech. I appreciate this thoughtful episode for adding nuance to this sensitive issue.

The expectation is always from the hindus which is hurtful for us. Have we seen even a single procession by muslims to express solidarity with the humiliation that the hindus have gone thru. Why was the land not given to hindus as an expression of love to our community? Can you left centre whatever shekarji answer? Aren't Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura our Mecca and Madina. In India, people confuse pluralism with secularism. Indian constitution doesn’t have a separation of religion and state. Thus it’s not secular.
Politicians don’t need to be secularists but the constitution should be secular. Unfortunately it’s not.
We don’t need Laïcité because that’s on the other extreme but we do need American kind of secularism.

Even these so called academia and leftists can't explain Indian secularism properly. When govt controls and manages temples...how is it any kind of secularism?
Oh wait govt is only involved in majority religion affairs. Other religions are private. Yet govt should not promote a religion.. what kind of double faced standards are these ?
      Other religions are getting promotion.

@@ThePrintIndia, I hope you one day make a CTC chronicling the role of the Left in this matter. A property dispute became a battle of religious supremacy because a victim was denied his/her victimhood. Your own channel has videos promoting the theory of the "alleged" demolition of the Ram temple by Babur, even though the Supreme Court of the land relied on archaeological evidence. Even the Muslim archaeologist of the Ram temple excavation team, Mr K K Muhammed, has accused the Left of attempting to "bury" the truth.

Nehru's stupidity is that he wanted the country to beleive that it was his thought process that brought and created this country.
What he missed is that Bharat always existed in this country despite having different king.
This blunder caused this country to take completely disastrous tragectory.
Thank God, many sane people in this country including people of Congress party did not heed to Nehru's thought.

    What you smokin man!!!!
Development in India since Nehruvian times???
    1945 World War II ended.
We got our Independence in 1947.
We are at war with Pakistan since September 1947.
The big five of NAM passed away and their nations became pygmies.
1950s the great Panditji codified ONLY hindu personal laws.
    China hammered us in 1962.
    Panchsheel went down the drain.
Nehru died heartbroken in 1964. His era too was marked by corruption.
Remember who nurtured the Abdullahs in Kashmir (which family) and why (By the way this was probably the only princely state that Nehru kept charge of to himself for merger with India, And what it cost India until recently ? [while Sardar Patel managed about 440 with skill and merged them into India before he died in December 1950. ]
    Shastri died mysteriously in Tashkent.
Indira came post Shastriji in late 1960's and, gave us more poverty, nationalisation, dismissal of legitimately elected state governments, systematised corruption, gave us emergency.
Heard of the 'Mitrokhin Papers' and an entire chapter on corrupt top politicians in India? Haven't we?
Remember who nurtured a Bhindrawale in Punjab and why? And what it cost India?
1980s China opened up to the US of A for manufacturing and progressed since to number 2 in the world.
Already destroyed in World War II, ravaged Japan, Germany, Europe and the far East progressed and how!!! to become developed nations,
while we remained a developing nation for 7 long decades.
1991/92 our economy didn't open up out of change of heart.
We did because we were forced to and because we were 'broke'.
Historically Bharat was a land of traders, trade, business and commerce. 800 years of foreign invasions and rule, broke our spine economically, culturally and socially. But our belief in our faith, religion, aastha, spirituality persisted.
So please please cut the BS, justification and obfuscation.
You my dear ain't even convincing yourself, let alone the duniya. Unclutter yourself first.
    🇮🇳
    Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.

Sincere and clear acknowledgement of wrongs in the near or distant past is an essential part of healing and moving on. Ostensibly to preserve communal harmony, our so-called secularists have selectively taken the stance that there was no oppression in the pre-colonial era, but are happy to call out Britain (even in her own parliament) for colonial practices and exploitation. This lays the foundation for inter-generational angst and deepens faultlines, which can and will be exploited by politicians!

    • @anuragchakraborty8766
      @anuragchakraborty8766 4 місяці тому

Acknowledgement of previous wrongs does not give you the license to commit equal wrongs and acts of bigotry today.

    • @PrashanthSadashivan
      @PrashanthSadashivan 4 місяці тому +1

Exactly the opposite - acknowledgement brings closure and provides an outlet for the angst that may be channeled towards violence/ hostility otherwise. This has unfortunately not happened in post independence India. Look at post-war Germany and Japan and their relations with their principal victims (USSR, China), it's a study in contrast and largely a function of how they treated their war crimes.

Indian civilization is more than 5000 years old and Hinduism has always existed since.
India has 85 % Hindus and has the right to call itself a Hindu state. This does not preclude others from co-existing and practicising their faith. But at the same time Hindus need not have to feel ashamed that they are the majority and can rightfully follow their faith without having to explain to the critics that they are somehow breaking secularism. Christians and Muslims have fought many wars trying to use religion to impose their rule and faith through crusades trying to capture and convert far out regions. HINDUISM HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN SUCH RELIGIOUS CRUSADES AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN THE CORNERSTONE OF HINDU PHILOSOPHY !!
