Kostas has brilliantly illuminated the profound cultural legacy of the Pontian Momogeri, a UNESCO-recognized tradition that embodies the resilience and spirit of Pontic Greek heritage. This extraordinary custom, rooted in the period of Turkish rule, represents more than a dance-it's a living narrative of resistance, fertility, and cultural memory.
The Momogeri ritual, performed during the twelve days of Christmas, symbolizes the complex history of Pontian Greeks. Dancers in intricate disguises, led by a mischievous central character, weave a performance that connects mythology, rebellion, and community survival. From men dressed as women to symbolic bride theft, each movement tells a story of cultural preservation and transformation.
Brought to Greece by refugees and revived in Western Macedonian villages, this tradition is a testament to cultural identity's enduring power. Kostas and his team have not just preserved a custom but breathed new life into a powerful historical expression of Greek resilience.
