My grandparents always talked about Old Christmas being January 6. They'd say leave Christmas decorations up until Old Christmas. Most urban people think I'm crazy when I tell them about Old Christmas. I knew it was an Appalachian thing. I'm glad you made a video on it. Merry Christmas, Donnie.
I’m not from the mountains but the Northeast area of NC - midway from the Outer Banks, NC and Virginia Beach,VA- but my grandmother always talked about Old Christmas. We didn’t take decorations before then or wash sheets before Jan. 6.
Mom was from Harlan County Kentucky. We never took down any Christmas decorations or lights until the day after January she said it was bad luck, thank you for this story! I enjoy your Appalachian stories reminds me of one’s my grandparents and my mom used to tell. Happy New Year!
As a catholic we celebrate from dec 25 to jan 6th. 12 days. We also have st Nicholas day on dec 6th. We put shoes under the tree 6th the kids get candy. We Irish don't do dishes or house work on jan 6th. And no washing on jan 1st. Great video. Merry Christmas
In Ireland we call it little Christmas and its supposed to be the day that women have off , but it never happens. Where did you get the idea that irish people dont wash dishes or do housework on jan 6th. Someone is pulling your leg, im Irish and also a catholic.
@verali164 from my grandma, and her mommy, and her mommy too. They were Irish. Sad it was bad luck. It's not a catholic thing. Only not taking your Christmas tree down before kings day .
I’m an Orthodox Christian now, but grew up in wonderful Baptist Christian home and little church. In my high school years, the Lord took care of my Christian journey by guiding me for a time to good Catholic Christians and attending their masses and turning to Him in prayer when stopping by the local Catholic parish on weekday afternoons. I too, heard growing up about Old Christmas in my Appalachian Mountains and some of the traditions. Since becoming Orthodox and learning of the ancient church and the early Christians, the unbroken history of the Christian faith thoughout the ages, well, the Story of Old Christmas in Appalachia only adds to and enriched my faith in my Sweet and Dear Saviour. Christ Is Born! Glorify Him!
My grandma who went to heaven 50 years ago used to say the real Christmas was in January and the animals in the barn would talk to each other on that night. Thanks for the reminder of my kin on this Christmas. # 1 show on UA-cam, great job !
Yes, I was told that also and many years I vowed to stay awake and see for myself, but I was just a child and never stayed awake to check it out. This brought back sweet memories of my grandmother.
Thank you, Mr. Donnie, for explaining this so perfectly, without any religious prejudice toward any religious group. It’s Christian history, plain and simple. All Christians can agree that Christmas is about the birth of our savior. We all collectively, thank good for sending His greatest gift to mankind! Merry Christmas and Happy Epiphany to you and yours!
My wife is from Serbia where they are Orthodox Christian and they celebrate Christmas day on January 7th. I lived there for a few years and always liked how they kept Christmas a holy day and it hasn't been commercialized. On Christmas eve, people will go to Church in the evening for mass and then go outside where they have a bonfire going with an oak tree. Gift giving usually only happens on New Years eve and is primarily for the children. My wife does have superstitions on certain days dedicated to saints where she forbids any house work from being done because it can be a bad omen. If you've never seen an Orthodox Christmas Eve mass, it's worth looking up on UA-cam. Its a beautiful ceremony and feels very ancient.

My siblings and I still celebrate oh Christmas on January 6th and somehow it feels as though that it's more special bendy traditional one on December 25th. Thank you for sharing and talking about it because there's a lot of people who never heard of it
This was a great video. I admire anyone who has the courage to speak what’s true. Our Lord and Savior gets forgotten among the piles of gifts and that is a shame. Glory to God in the highest. Bless His holy name. Thank you for all you do to educate & entertain us. You’ve made me cry and you’ve made me laugh with your stories. Mostly, you’ve made me aware of our roots. We come from hardworking, God fearing determined people. What a blessing you are. Keep up the good work. I look forward to a New Year filled with your fine stories. God bless you, sir.
I love hearing about old Christmas and I love hearing about the animals kneeling down and praying at midnight on old Christmas. There's also some kind of plant that will sprout berries at midnight on old Christmas. I'd love to see that with my own eye's. It was talked about when I was a kid, but I just didn't remember it. Now as an Adult I know the story. I share that with my kids and grandchildren. Thank you Mr. Donnie Laws. Merry Christmas to you and your family and God bless. 🎄🎁🎅🤶☃️❄️❤️✝️

On Dec. 25, my family gathers together for dinner. A bit later, we read Bible story about Jesus birth. Afterwards, we bring out the birthday cake honoring Jesus birth.. This is Jesus’s birthday cake. We have done this for as long as I can remember. My grandmother and mother carried on this tradition. I have carried it on and so has my grown children. Seems like a great tradition, what do you think? 😊
I live in Minnesota now, but the mountains are in my blood. Thank you for your story. It makes me think of my Mammaw, who always started her stories with “back in them days.” I love the memories of her and listening to stories of our family, and of course the mountains. Thank you Mr. Donnie. God bless you and Merry Christmas
What a lovely way to start my day of cooking. I love the stories. Merry Christmas Mr. Donnie and thank you for the stories, critter updates and the metal detection videos all this past year. God bless you friend.
We live in Rome, GA, and grew up in Rabun Gap. As Orthodox Christians, we celebrate January 6th Christmas just like our ancestors did in these hills. Oranges in the Shoes on Nicholas Tag and 12 days of Christmas starting on December 25 until Jan 6th.
My dad taught us about Yuletide which is old Christmas he wanted us to know the old traditions even if we didn’t keep them We practiced new Christmas Dec 25th but I’m very thankful and grateful for all the old pioneer traditions After all they were here first
Mr. Donnie Laws, when I think of the Old Christmas, I remember my family gathering on Christmas Day at my grandparents house for a big get together and a lot of good food. As a boy, I was always fascinated with the Christmas Story read aloud to all the kids by our grandfather from Luke Chapter 2 in the Holy Bible. This passage of scripture tells of the birth of Jesus Christ. It was a very special time in my life growing up. One of the men would pray, thanking God for the gift of His Son Jesus. Then it was time to eat. A big meal spread out all over the kitchen, always include a large baked ham. My grandmaw would have all sorts of pies and cakes ready for desert. My grandpaw would always have a bushel basket each of red apples and navel oranges near the Christmas tree. Sometimes they would have these huge peppermint candy sticks. All serving as special treats for the kids. As gifts, my grandparents would give each of the kids new money. Usually silver dollar coins. Sometimes uncirculated bills. A simple time in a very special place. A place that still lives today in my heart and memories. So when I think of the Old Christmas I think about the day each year when folks would pause to honor the birth of Jesus and to count their blessings, thankful for all that God has provided for us. Mr. Laws, from our family to yours we are wishing you a Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. - Tennessee Smoky
Merry Christmas, Donnie, to you and your family. Love your stories of Appalachia. You truly ate the best storyteller I have ever listened to. Thanks for keeping the history alive.
Merry Christmas Mr. Laws! Im in Southern California, no snow. I have never had no snow durning Christmas. I love Christ! Im greatful that He was born.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My grandmother was born on January 6th. She always said she was born on Old Christmas Day. I have not been able to find out much information that explained what she meant. Thanks for the information.
Yes. Very true. I was raised Roman Catholic. Little Christmas was January 6 for us as well as January 6 being Orthodox Christmas. Thank you for for information
Merry Christmas Donnie, may you and your family have a blessed and safe Christmas season. Thank you for another year of the best, most relaxing videos on the tube. Looking forward to many more. You’ve helped me through a very dark time after my stroke, and I’ll never be able to repay you for that. Thank you for all you’ve done for me.
Awww Donnie! I could absolutely sit with you & listen to all these wonderful stories, memories, and superstitions! Merry Christmas to you and all of your family! And May God grant you good health and many blessings in the Nee Year!! Thank you for everything you do!! ❤️✝️😊
We always celebrated "Little Christmas " on January 6th with my grandparents from Czechslovkia. I have always celebrated that day with my family. Little Christmas was always a sit down dinner with talking and little presants. I'm 72 and we still try to get adult children and grandchildren together.
Mr Donnie I surely enjoy watching ur videos especially ones like this one. I wish I could meet u and set and talk about the old days. I bet u know so many things that happened back then. Thanks for sharing this. Merry Christmas. Mr Donnie
Enjoyed this very much, brother Donnie! So many memories revolve around Christmases of the past, definitely precious memories. Thanks, brother, and Merry Christmas and G-d bless to you and yours! Please pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
Thank you Donnie. Not only was this a perfect way to start my day but I learned something new💜 I hope you and your wife have recovered from your illness🙏 Wishing you and yours a very merry CHRISTmas🤗
My maternal grandmother was born in 1891 England; my mother was born in 1916 in England, met my American father in 1943, married in 1944 and I was born in 1945 in England. I am 78 years old now and treasure the memories of childhood Christmases with some of the English traditions we had. For instance, we put our tree up a few days before December 25 and didn’t take it down until January 6. Never fully understood why but it was our family tradition. About 20 years ago I read that leaving the tree up until January 6 followed the tradition of the Epiphany (12 days of Christmas after December 25) at least that is what I figured out anyway. Thank you so much for telling the story of old Christmas, it clarified our family tradition so much more than I knew before. 👍🏻👏❤️🎄🎁🎅🤶😍🕊🙏
Merry Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous and Healthy New Year to you and yours Donnie. As Tiny Tim says, "God Bless Us One and All!" Best Wishes from Scotland and thanks for these insightful videos. Jock.
Thanks Donnie for focusing on the real meaning of Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family and may God bless you all real good in the New Year!
My family celebrated Old Christmas up through the years. Me and my sister had a lovely dinner together and listened to music. Merry Old Christmas. God bless us everyone.
Merry Christmas~! I loved this video, learning about Old Christmas. January 6 is very, very special to me, because it was my Mother's birthday, and she's been gone a long time now. It's also known as the 12th Day of Christmas, like you mentioned---the Epiphany, I think? I'm not sure, but often times we leave up our Christmas tree until the 6th of January because of it being the 12th Day of Christmas. God Bless and thank you.
Amazing as always brother! Sorry just seeing this but I just now got the notification. I know you upload on Monday and Friday but I didn't see it in recommend yesterday either. Anyway, amazing video as always, God bless and MERRY CHRISTMAS my awesome mountain brother!!
As a southerner & an Orthodox Christian my family I still celebrate Xmas in January. Same as its been since the Apostles founded the Orthodox Church. We dont change things, Christ didnt give us permission to do so.
I'm Orthodox as well and follow the old calendar. Some people think it's weird, but I enjoy it, just like I enjoy Pascha rarely being on the same day as most other people.

Merry Christmas to you and your family. I wanted to add something you may already know about. My mom said the days between Christmas and old Christmas were ruling days. Those 12 days you could judge the weather of each month for the next year. I'm sure they meant like sunny or alot of falling weather. The 26th would be for Jan. And so on. Just something interesting. Glad I found your channel. I. Like to think about those things from my mom. I miss her. God bless
Beautiful! Thank you, i absolutely loved this! And, I'm all about a day off from housework! 😊 I hope you and your family has a very merry Christmas and a blessed new year! Lord bless and keep you all ❤🙏

Awesome my friend. Thanks for sharing your memories my friend. God bless you. Merry Christmas.

Your very welcome my friend. Merry Christmas.
Awesome my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this. God bless you. Your very welcome. Merry Christmas my friend.
Amazing as always brother! Sorry just seeing this but I just now got the notification. I know you upload on Monday and Friday but I didn't see it in recommend yesterday either. Anyway, amazing video as always, God bless and MERRY CHRISTMAS my awesome mountain brother!!
That's fine my brother. I understand that all to well. God bless you Jared. Merry Christmas my brother.
As a southerner & an Orthodox Christian my family I still celebrate Xmas in January. Same as its been since the Apostles founded the Orthodox Church. We dont change things, Christ didnt give us permission to do so.
Awesome my friend. God bless you. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I'm Orthodox as well and follow the old calendar. Some people think it's weird, but I enjoy it, just like I enjoy Pascha rarely being on the same day as most other people.
We always called it Little Christmas. When the Three Wise Men came. My decorations always stay up till then.
Awesome my friend. Thanks for sharing this.

I miss her. God bless
