A few kilometers from Nice, the village of Peillon is a little gem. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful perched villages of the Côte d'Azur. It is for this reason that it is fully classified.
Its typically medieval architecture with its stacking, its built arcades, its vaulted passages, its small winding staircases in cobbled streets, will offer you a succession of surprises and opportunities for wonder.
The visit to Peillon-Village begins with Place Arnulf where the fountain dating from 1800 is located.
This fountain was listed as a Historic Monument in 1941.
The base was made with part of the stones of the old gate of the village.
At the entrance of the village, you cross the passage of the old entrance gate of the fortress of Peillon which you can guess thanks to the remains of the doorframe and the iron hinges, just after the War Memorial.
At the top of the village, you will find the Parish Church of Saint-Sauveur or Church of the Transfiguration. This is exactly where the remains of a fortified castle are hidden. The square keep obtained a new existence from the 12th century in the form of a church bell tower.
At the beginning of the 19th century, it was rebuilt with an octagonal roof made of slates replacing the old glazed tiles. A small chapel used for worship for many years before being transformed and enlarged first at the beginning of the 16th century (1525) then in the 17th century (1643). Its facade, of classical composition, was erected in 1793 thanks to the Prior François Fulconis.
During the last restoration in 1980, fragments of frescoes of unknown author were discovered in the choir.
At 376 meters above sea level, in the valley of the Paillons, the town of Peillon takes its name from the old perched medieval village, fortified, which dominates it from the top of its rocky outcrop, an eagle's nest at the bottom of a mountain cirque. preserved for centuries. Going up from Nice, 13 kilometers away, the various hamlets of the town - Borghéas, Châteauvieux, les Mazues, Sainte-Thècle, Les Moulins, le Village, les Novaines - follow one another peacefully in the heart of a preserved natural environment.

かなり複雑に入り組んだ住居群ですね 自然石の積み方を見ても歴史を感じます。植木には素朴さがあって、とても人間性重視が伺えます。アーチの石積みは乱雑に見えますが、古さから見ても強度は充分保っているようですね。このような狭い歩道を使って資材運搬と建築施工を行っていくのは大変な作業だったでしょうね。

Thanks for sharing. I have to agree on the word "mythical". Of all of Provence's hilltop or hillside medieval villages, Peillon has to be among the top 3 that remains largely undiscovered by mass tourism or the art world (i.e., art galleries). This one reminds me of the many untamed, original, hilltop villages you can find throughout Italy, especially from Tuscany to Lazio. Maybe it's the fact that Peillon is harder to access makes it so.

Некоторые двери кажутся маленькими и ступеньки тоже как будто там живут маленькие люди.Может гномы?🤣 Обычным людям там тесно - узкие улицы , низкие арки.
