" Our Beloved Scotsman" gone but never will be forgotten. For as long as there is one fan left playing his music he will be remembered. The rock of Celtic Thunder.
How said I discovered Celtic Thunder too late to see this fellow in real time; but, so great to have discovered them. I lose myself in Celtic pathos, pride and sorrow when I listen to their music. Keep getting up for the bell no matter how battered and bruised until God calls your number - that is the message Celtic music sends to me.
I'm the same as you ... found CT in june this year and it was George's voice on Amazing Grace, on a vid on fb that I thought wow..... only to find out he'd passed away... so sad ...such a lovely voice ....
a wonderful entertainer, a gentle man, such a tragic loss to the music industry, RIP George Donaldson, may your music play on!!!! Always in our hearts!!!
On a bus tour through Glencoe in 2003, the tour guide played this. Not a word was spoken during it. You could FEEL the history. Very haunting and I'll never forget it.
Glencoe has been a second home for my family for many years, I understand your words. We have always felt the history, the sadness is always there but we,ve seen the glen in moments of beauty. My husband showed us Glencoe, and now he rest there in his ancestral burial ground.
This is a lovely rendition of the Story of The Massacre at Glencoe. I knew about this part of my Clan’s history as a child and being a Campbell was horrified by it. It caused me to research into the history of the Clan’s of Scotland and their allegiances to the British and the how and why these terrible things occurred. We are so fortunate that when emigrating from the old country to the New World they did not bring their enmities with them as is so prevalent today..
Like you, I am a Campbell descendant and feel shame and sorrow for what happened at Glencoe. Research has shown mixed results, as could be expected from that period of Scottish history. However, there is little doubt of the Campbell part in the Glencoe travesty.
Love this song, George Donaldson, proud of his ancestry, related the sad story of the Scottish, specially the clan he belonged. They deserve to be remembered. Thanks George! R.I.P
I'd somehow never heard George sing this. One of my fave Scottish ballads, and one we played as I took my (then new) wife on a tour of the highlands back around 1999. Even in summer the glen is imposing, I somehow couldn't imaging what it must have been like for the clansmen fleeing in the snow.
My ancestors were living in the Glen Coe area. Duncan Rankin was the first to be killed as he attempted to cross the Coe river when the massacre began. This moving song sung by a departed son of Scotland reminds me of my connection to this beautiful country.
Beautiful video, George. This is one of my favorite songs on The World in My Mind CD. You sing it beautifully and I think this video is a very poignant treatment of a very tragic & violent part of Scottish history. The scenery is gorgeous and the deer is a great touch!
Very good video and I don't know the history of Glencoe but I intend to find out. Thank you for bringing us this awareness with your wonderful singing talent.
LOVE this! Learned a few years ago that I'm actually from Clan Macdonald, my great grandmother on my dad's side was Mary Macdonald, and we've already done the research. I'm proud of my ancestry, and just love your rendering of this ballad! I'm guessing that since you're a Donaldson, we're related in some way. Awesome! Perhaps this is where we get our musical talents, too...my dad's family. Keep on singing! :)
It is no doubt foolish to weep both for George Donaldson, and for his family after these years have passed, but I can't help weeping for the extraordinary man his family and the world have lost. Sing to the angels, George Donaldson
You're not the only one. To this day, especially at Highland Games, you still hear how the McDonalds dislike Campbells. It is such a good thing that so much of Scots history is remembered in song.
I know this is 6 years after your comment. I believe it is actually, more often than not, the attempt to click on "like" through tear-filled eyes. Happens quite often on emotional videos which is why I usually go back in a few days to double check and make a correction if necessary. God Bless you and Keep you Safe in His Loving Embrace. Have an Awesome Friday, Great weekend and an Amazing week ahead.
