An irreplaceable man. Talent, wit, and integrity. We won't see his equal again soon. It has been some years since he left us but I send my thoughts and prayers to his wife and daughter.
I used to play this song when I cleaned the rooms of residents who had passed in the nursing home I worked for. It was my way of remembering them and paying my respects as I cleaned their room one last time before it became a new resident’s room.
His music is timeless. George, when you look down from above, just know that you are missed. You have left us with a beautiful legacy. Your music will always be with us. How beautiful Heaven must be having this Gentle Giant. 🫶
In my life time so many famous great men and women have left this life, but his passing affected me so much more than any of those others. I had never been to the their concerts although PBS has brought them to my TV and I have watched and I have listened to Celtic Thunder's music many times. I cried off and on for a few days after this great mans passing and I am not sure why it affected me so deeply. Even now I get a lump in my throat and my eyes itch to shed a tear when I watch him sing and think of him in the past tense.
I listen to this song, perhaps, 10 to 15 times a week, sometimes back to back to back. I miss George, miss his entertainment. This song though, it says a lot to me, about me, and for me. I know it has been around a long time, however, the version by George, well, that is obvious, it is perhaps the best, most solemn, heart felt version I have ever heard.
Not since Johnny Cash's rendition of 'Hurt' have I been so-moved by a song. This is truly haunting, a beautiful dirge from a gripping and powerful singer. If this does not tease tears from you're eyes, you're most like made of granite.
I just listened and wept to think of my grandfather, who has had a huge impact on my life. He left us in 1987 in the same sudden way that George did. But what a song, and what a singer.
I'm four years late. But remember "Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and very dear."
I have commented before but the more I listen to George Donaldson the more I admire the perceptive, principled, compassionate man he was. His loss to Carolyn and Sarah Donaldson is utterly immeasurable. Such men are rare. Even now, over seven years later I offer them my condolences.
He was an amazing gentlemen in the truest sense of the word. I am a member of the salvation army and for many years I was a regular in the Tollbooth bar to sell my war cry and young soldier if he was actually singing when I came in he would stop say he had to get a young soldier for his daughter then once it was safe in his guitar bag he started again. One day he stopped and said x amount of time we've been doing this I'd call any other massive in here darling but I'd not disrespect you tell us your name so I did. He looked at me funny do I know you when you have your clothes off he said then realizing what he said got flustered bright red and quickly said I mean them clothes. Remember this is in one of the most vocal pubs in Glasgow and he's liked up. Again more laughing and banter from the locals. But yes I had to admit I was one of two people who regularly sang in folk clubs etc with my " partner" He had me come sing the Rowan tree as that was what he had heard us sing last. He said the old rugged cross with me too as someone requested it. Through time he often called me to sing even got me back one night in a club singing with my partner when he walked up put his arm over my shoulder and said loudly I didn't recognize you for a bit with proper clothes and yes he though he was just back from a tour with Celtic thunder joined us He loved his wife, his daughter literally held his heart in her hands, He was a genuine Glasgow man loved his city and his faith. Big George is so much missed in his ain place to this very day
I will always be grateful for this cover. As we all struggle in our own ways to say goodbye to George - with this parting glass, he said his goodbye to us. Thank you George. We'll never forget. I can promise.
I love to sing I have my granddaughter four and a half and she's sing singingI will walk 500 miles she knows of the words God bless her. Rest in Peace my friend. And I hope your family is good. 🙏🏻
A classic with deep meaning, and song by a masterful musician. Best version I've ever heard, his passing is so very sad......Kudos brother, you have left a powerful, and superb message to all men ...
Hearing George sing makes you feel good even at this sad time. I listened to the group last night singing Amazing Grace. And his deep voice makes the song. Prayers for his wife Carolyn and Daughter Sarah and all of the Celtic Thunder Family.
I miss this gentleman very much. Here I am at 70 and living in the U.S. I love his videos and I genuinely grieve for him and my heart goes out to his family. Bless you George - missing you.
Knowing he's gone now, just gives this song a whole new tone..Miss you George. Lots of prayers, love, and light to his family, and everyone that made CT an experience.
receiving this is bitter sweeet. I really enjoyed hearing George but I recieved this two days after a young man was killed in an accident. He was coming to USA and was so excited. My heart is aching as hewas to stay within my home. His mom and sister are criti cal. This is her omly son.
This was played at my dad's funeral last week and will forever be a tune of mine. Thank you for this, it is truly beautiful and raises every hair on my body. Xxx
my good friend, a witty, cheeky lass, full of life passed on recently and as I mourn her company this song released my grief to finally cry - alone. A very moving song. To her, I toast a glass full of love and laughter.
Hi big bear, how i miss you, always the father figure, like me a celt, what a horrible loss and hole u have left never to be replaced;thank u for the joy your voice gave my dada in his final hours and with his last strength still managed to sing parting glass as a goodbye to us,and we sang too joined in a circle around him. I went to galway this year as it was 4 years since his passing and again parting glass was played in two versions.thank u george for the peace u brought to my dada..may god bless and keep u and watch over your family♥♥
I can hardly believe that it's mere hours until this wonderful man is laid to rest. It still doesn't seem real. My heart is aching for Carrie and Sarah and the CT family. George touched so many lives with his music. I had the great pleasure to meet him before a show in 2010. I'll forever be grateful for that chance (as well as the 3 concerts I was able to attend). George was a true class act. A great musician, wonderful performer, a truly funny man... and we all know he was such a family man. I will be keeping George's family and friends in my prayers. We miss you, George. And we'll never forget you. Thank you for sharing your music with us these past few years.
I will always remember George singing" The Old Man. It moved me to tears because it made me think about my dad and now hearing him sing the parting glass I realize just how privileged I was to see him before he passed. R.I.P. GEORGE
Beautiful song sung by George. And yes, "we'd wish [you] one more day to stay". You are joined to us forever. May God keep Carolyn and Sarah in his infinite care and give them comfort. I know you are at peace.
I still can not believe that George Donaldson died one year ago March 12, 2014. I remember meeting him November 4, 2010 in Sacramento California at the Memorial auditorium and he was such a good man for signing my paper that I made that said Celtic Thunder.
I just love this song and George, you were a perfect person to sing it! Praying for your family and close friends as the 1 year mark of your move to Heaven quickly approaches. Still can't believe you're gone, but I'll always be thankful for having the ability to see you in concert. It was truly amazing to see the light you had, in person. See you again one day!
George, a better take on this old classic has not been made for years. Yours is the honest, straight-up way that makes good Celtic tunes great. Respect is due. -- Hugo MD.
I've been in Dublin last week for a tournament. One of the Guys, living there was about to leave for canada for 1 year. So he sang this song, while sitting together in the evening. It was a great pleasure and I'm sure, that I will play it at my own good bye someday.
I actually never realized he passed away....and a couple of days ago I was looking for new Thunder songs, and the title of the song was R.I.P George....And this song...I broke down. Just.....realizing he'd risen, and this song on top of it hit so hard....

This song makes me cry. My Daddy sounded a lot like George when he sang. I like to think maybe George & my Daddy are doing duets in Heaven. Miss you Daddy, and I miss you too George.
He seemed the nicest of men, someone you would dearly love as a friend, and the haunting song he sang so movingly, and beautifully,a sad loss to all of us.
10 years later and it still feels as raw as that first couple days.
Miss you Big Man

@@schmidtygamer1421 wow, that is quite deep, and very well-written.
There are so many versions of this song out there. This is by far one of the best.
The first rendition of this song that I felt had the proper mood given the subject matter. Thank you Mr Donaldson, and rest easy.
George...tu nous manques. Toujours une pensée pour toi.
Loved his voice and so sadly missed for ever in are hearts for ever more may this music live on RIp 🙏 George
What a wonderful voice George has I could listen to him everyday especially The Working Man Stay Safe.
I have left instruction in my will that this song be sung at my funeral (I hope that will be a while in the future!)
This is part of my playlist. I was stunned that he died so young. What a talent.
