    Excellent tips! I was actually once told by a hiring manager that the receptionist told them that they should hire me. Ever since, I've always been even more conscience of my demeanor while waiting in the reception area.

    This was a great video. I was so very fortunate to be a part of an internship/mentoring program called Inroads. We did a weeklong series of workshops on interviewing to get us prepared for corporate America. We covered all of these tips. One tip that was not mentioned that I found extremely effective was video recording. Our mentors recorded us doing mock interviews and then played them back and told us what we were doing correct/incorrect. It is amazing to see how you look on video and to see any nuances you might have like nail picking, hair twirling etc. It is very easy to video tape yourself these days with the invention of smart phones. Another very useful resource that they gave all of the interns was the Knock Em Dead Book series. I just checked and they have a 2014 updated series if anyone is interested. Again, great job Nikki!!

    Excellent tips! Thanks so much! I don't interview well because I either get nervous and clam up or get nervous and blab. Practicing is a great idea, I'm going to try it!

    Thank you for these tips! I need them now since I am looking for another job. I never thought about tip #9 until my last job. The hiring manager got a reference from the receptionist about our demeanor and attitude while waiting in the lobby. I was told that after I got the job. There were about 60 applicants and the receptionist picked me and another lady that she felt was right for the positions. You are so right, Nikki. I hope you have a great Wednesday. Stacie

    These tips were all spot on Nikki. Great video. One thing I think could also be beneficial is doing your homework on the company prior to the interview. Google them, visit their website, read about their history, what they do. Also read any news articles or recent press releases. If you want to go the extra mile you could look up the person interviewing you on LinkedIn and see what their career has been like so you know the type of person you're going to be talking to. As a hiring manager, if a candidate has done their homework on our company and even on me, I feel like they care about the position because at least they took the time to do the research.

      Thank you so much! So happy you enjoyed the tips. Thanks of sharing the email tip: I definitely think sending a thank you email is better than not sending anything, mailing a card really can give a big impact because it shows more of a effort, along with we rarely get mail these days and it can make you stand out a bit more. With the job market being so competitive now we need that little extra edge :). Hugs. Nikki

    Great video. I started carrying a portfolio a few years ago and it has come in handy, especially having the extra resumes and the writing pad. I remember when my current boss started about job specifics and upcoming changes during the interview and I asked her if she would mind if I took notes. Something else I try to remember is to put in my license, copies of certificates and even my social security card in my portfolio just in case I need to fill out other paperwork during the first interview. I totally forgot this last time to send the thank you note but I still got the job.

    For the thank you card, what kind of "card" should it be? Like, what kind of designs? Should the note be handwritten? Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! Very helpful!

    • @EEN63
      @EEN63 10 років тому +1

      This is just my opinion, but I would match up the card design with the feel of the particular industry. If you want a graphic artist position, design your own fabulous cards. If you're going into finance, simple, understated, elegant cards. If fashion is your career, then an elegant card or fun and trendy card depending on the type of fashion (e.g. Chanel = elegant vs. Betsy Johnson = fun and quirky). Make it fit the position/industry. And no matter what industry, it should ALWAYS be neatly handwritten. So don't forget their business card with the correct spelling of their name and their mailing address. I hope my two cents helped.

      EEN63 Thank you so much! Yes, I agree, perfect answer! What do you think about sending thank you emails? That's what I did, but I didn't know you were supposed to send handwritten notes.

    • @EEN63
      @EEN63 10 років тому

      Jenny W Chan Etiquette is changing along with technology and I'm certainly not an expert. But nothing is quite as impressive or simply nice to receive as a handwritten thank you, regardless if it's for a personal or business occasion.
      I've been known to send e-cards to my family and friends for various occasions (but usually in addition to 'real cards' - I like sending lots of Hallmark love!!). However, my family and friends already love me and I'm not trying to make a great, first impression.
      If you're in the technology field, then perhaps an e-card holds similar esteem as a handwritten card. (I really don't know as I'm the furthest from techie as you can get.) However, it is never wrong to send a handwritten card. But if an electronic thank you is expected in the technology field, then I would probably send them an e-card thank you as opposed to just a basic email with your thanks. Punchbowl.com has some nice thank you e-cards but I'm sure there are tons of other sites as well.
      I'm pretty sure there are plenty of 'technology current' etiquette books that address this question. If you're in the job market, I'd definitely check some out to see what's what… and then, please come back here and let us all know!!! (Descendants from Emily Post might be a good place to start your search. She was the Queen of Etiquette for generations and I believe her family members are still carrying the etiquette-book torch.) Plus, having an etiquette reference guide will be a helpful tool to help you stay ahead of the pack for years and years to come. Good manners always impress and never go out of style!
      Good luck in your job search!

    Nikki that was great advice! I remember (back in the day lol) I had a medical teacher tell us in class to always ask this question at the end of our interviews (when the interview is over ) ask... "Is there anything else you may need from me?" Say it in a very friendly voice tho) Say that just before you shake their hand bye. I can't tell you how many times they said "yes!) or if they say no they said "I think we covered everything, but Thank You So Much for asking!!" It shows that you were truly paying attention in the interview=). Oh and key ... Always thank them for their time! 😃 I loved this video!

    EXCELLENT tips, Nikki! Common courtesy is necessary when you are being hired and throughout your employment, because you will be representing that company and others will be depending on you in many ways. To be sure, being on time and a handwritten thank you card are basic courtesies and always played a key role in my decision making when hiring new, qualified people.
    I might add, honesty is paramount when wording your resume in a manner that highlights your assets and puts your best foot forward but not over embellishing to the point of dishonesty or implying skill sets you don't actually possess. (No doubt, the truth will come out!)
    I think this will be a very beneficial series for so many searching for employment, especially with today's capricious economic conditions. Great job!

    I agree with these, but half these things people do all the time, yet still get the job, just makes me wonder what exactly employers are looking for...also if the receptionist takes an instant dislike to you, even though she doesnt know you, youve had it
