Can we get one for the PC Engine vs TG16? Like why did us get this wider version instead of the square like PCE and why wasn’t there a 2P? How really wants to play alone?
Well if I can find an interesting way to tell that story but basically in America bigger is better so it tested that way. The Lynx had the same test results so it became bigger than usual. The one port came from reducing size and component price which of course gives them a way to make more money selling taps! Thankfully those days are over and we just pay 70-80 for controllers!
The Master System just did not have the 3rd party support the Famicom/NES did thanks to Nintendo locking up those developers, had that not been the case, and SEGA of America done better marketing, and box art for the games I think It would have been neck, and neck with the NES.
I know this is an old video but living in the US there are more Nintendo fans than Sega fans here as I see it, I rarely here people talk about even Atari as well and I grew up with that system. You'll have to really find fans that are truly Sega fans on this site that does most of Sega's unknown history. I mostly be finding them from the UK or south America well I don't know I hope this helps
What can I say? History is written by the victors. You could say that there are many Sega fans out there but they all got jobs got married had kids and moved on while your average Nintendo lifer did none of these but managed to have 500 switch game boxes on the wall in their parents house. 😂
I love the videos, and this one is very great - but I am devastated the second title isn’t “The Genesis of Genesis” which may be ridiculous, but it’s got charm.
Funny how Atari went into talks first with Nintendo to release the Famicom in N. America, then with SEGA to do the same with the Mega Drive - even funnier with the Tomahawk name, which somehow makes me think that would have been SEGA's equivalent to the Canyonero.
Now I hope that it was named after Star Trek II. . A system made for older teens and an edgy audience with its marketing geared towards it, was named after an object in a movie that was for nerds/geeks throughout the 60s and onwards. . Genesis does. . .
No one talks about this? I covered it in a video a few weeks ago! I won't post a direct link because I don't want to "spam" your comments, but it's in my video "11 Facts About the Genesis You Maybe Didn't Know" if you or anyone want to see it on my channel. But, my channel is small so I understand people not knowing it's out there. I left out the Atari part of the story because I thought it lacked credibility, personally. I couldn't find anything beyond forum posts (the ones you showed in this video) and I didn't consider those a reliable enough source. I'm not saying it's wrong, just that I personally didn't think it was provable enough on include as a fact in my video. Anyway, been a fan of your channel for a long time so I'm not giving you a hard time, just mainly wanted to get out there that there have been people talking about this!
That's pretty much like the name "America" being used, and half of the people here in the United States saying, "North or South America?" While the other half of people are like "I'm a proud American, America is my home, and I'm proud of my country." Then you get to ask them if they know the actual name of the country that they live in, and they give you this blank stare. Then you can point out that there is no actual country named "America". There are even "Made in America" labels, on products made in Mexico, and Canada, because they are part of America, and so are Brazil, Argentina and all the countries in between. There is still debate as to whether there are two "Americas" or both are the same continent.
I would say that people use the term United States in a legal sense like US law or US passport and American in a cultural sense even though yes the americas encompass many nations.
I remember reading about this but thanks for the final clarification. I didn't know about Atari's part though so thanks. I feel condolences for those gamers in America that got saddled with that silly name. Atari instead of using a cool name came up with something so abstract and intangible it rendered playing each game an art experience rather than just something fun. I'm also sure Sega of America did their best to make boxart for their region as unappealing as possible whether it's using the black inlay borders for the worst design layout, using that awful red inlay cover or just printing out an inlay without any borders or layout. Surprised the game sold so well in the US to be honest. Arguably Japan did worse with their "WTF is this?" covers but US tried to be minimalist but also uniform and it didn't work at all. PAL did things the correct way and the games looked lovely on store shelves as a result. Apologies my autism means I have some strong views on certain things. It wasn't a rant though. 😂
@@GTV-Japan One of the few positives of social media is that it allows me to communicate my thoughts more than if I was in a group being talked over due to my disability.
@@GTV-Japan If I could communicate more easily in real life like most people I wouldn't personally end up relying on it so much to make my thoughts heard, a lot of which I get in trouble for having "hot takes" or contrarian opinions.
To repeat my comment on the previous upload, Megadrive was the better name and the American SNES was ugly as sin. Back in those days brands & products could have different names in regions as the world was not as interconnected as it is today. I imported a lot of American magazines like EGM so this particular issue became background noise for me. However, I'm still upset they harmonized the international branding on the 'Raider' chocolate bar and it got renamed as "twix". ua-cam.com/video/jNwwyJa9wKg/v-deo.html
Thanks for bringing your comments over here and updating them. Of course twix is only candy bar with the cookie crunch. That joy if eating one doesn’t change regardless of the name! Happy new year 🐅
There, who knew? Atari is the reason. Either name is cool to me. Interesting that North America was calling it the genesis, and I always understood that’s the territory that did the best (maybe I’m wrong, but I had heard that somewhere)
I think the UK and Australia probably did better as far as market share. I have friends who grew up never even seeing anything Nintendo in the 80s or 90s! But from what I’ve studied only Japan and Germany were the two places Nintendo out sold Sega in the 16 bit days
It definitely doesn't bother me, I actually think it's kind of a cool bit of ephemeral trivia. What does bother me is Nintendo allowing a country with a record of massive human rights violations, to buy the biggest stake in the company outside of Nintendo themselves. That actually made me queasy when I read it. (And they apparently own 96% of SNK, too. Yay.)
I always looked at "Genesis" as an odd name, for a few reasons. One, there's the obvious religious association with the word, and as a kid being forced to sit through boring church crap, the last thing I wanted were ties between religiosity and video games. The other being that, being the child of a huge Phil Collins fan, I assumed it had something to do with "old people" music, haha.
Well the root were is generation. So I see it just as an origin. Point. But weird that it came after the master system which wasn’t the master apparently
Don’t worry! I have a few years left in the tank. When the day comes though I will let everyone know, have a proper finale and say goodbye. The channel will stay up too. Thanks for the support!
The "byte" and "bit" discussion here is hilariously shallow. "Things shifted to bytes in the 90's" - oh really. How fast is your fiber? Gigabit. ... .... ...... Memory chips (ROM, EPROM, RAM) sizes were always sized in bits, not in bytes.
Well, games were always listed in megabits until CDs came around then the amount of data didn’t really matter but they always talked about the as 700 megabytes.
"Genesis sounds cooler".... respectfully disagree! As a brit and being my childhood console, through my clearly bias glasses, Megadrive is the only true name 😋
My apologies, but UA-cam seems to have eaten up half of the video. For whatever reason the original video would process over and over in UA-cam Studio and cut off at the 10 minute mark.
@@GTV-Japan LOL that's true
I love the videos, and this one is very great - but I am devastated the second title isn’t “The Genesis of Genesis” which may be ridiculous, but it’s got charm.
Someone else said that too. I guess I could but the repetition sounds odd to me. Thanks for sharing your opinion 👍🏻
In a perfect world we could have had the Sega Mega Genesis Drive!
Perhaps it awaits us in the afterlife
@@GTV-Japan Heaven is where the Sega Mega Genesis Drive DOES! (Just rolls off the tongue)
Amazing, also for the second time :D
Thanks for coming back!
Funny how Atari went into talks first with Nintendo to release the Famicom in N. America, then with SEGA to do the same with the Mega Drive - even funnier with the Tomahawk name, which somehow makes me think that would have been SEGA's equivalent to the Canyonero.
I guess each time the new owners would mess it up?
Curious bit of trivia
Defiantly a better name than tomahawk. Surprised they didn't try to call it the Atari Ocelot tho
Haha that’s awful
Yess
🥛!
Ok here we go. I'll get the mochi
Perfect day to do so 🐅
swag
Yeah! 🍺
16:10; YOU FOOL!!
Wait until 16:25 or so
I think Mega Drive sounds cooler than Genesis
Me too. I choose power over mystique! Thanks for watching and happy new year 🥳
Now I hope that it was named after Star Trek II.
.
A system made for older teens and an edgy audience with its marketing geared towards it, was named after an object in a movie that was for nerds/geeks throughout the 60s and onwards.
.
Genesis does.

It’s just my usual hyperbole. 😂 thanks for supporting the channel for so long! I’ll go see your video and what you say. 🍺
What would the internet be without it?
@@GTV-Japan One of the few positives of social media is that it allows me to communicate my thoughts more than if I was in a group being talked over due to my disability.
If only there were such a thing as anti social media… I don’t have disabilities only super powers!
@@GTV-Japan If I could communicate more easily in real life like most people I wouldn't personally end up relying on it so much to make my thoughts heard, a lot of which I get in trouble for having "hot takes" or contrarian opinions.
Ok
Bit, crumb, nibble, byte. 1 bit,2 bits, 4 bits, 8 bits
Great video
To repeat my comment on the previous upload, Megadrive was the better name and the American SNES was ugly as sin.
Back in those days brands & products could have different names in regions as the world was not as interconnected as it is today. I imported a lot of American magazines like EGM so this particular issue became background noise for me.
However, I'm still upset they harmonized the international branding on the 'Raider' chocolate bar and it got renamed as "twix".

Thanks for bringing your comments over here and updating them. Of course twix is only candy bar with the cookie crunch. That joy if eating one doesn’t change regardless of the name! Happy new year 🐅
Back then there were a lot of religious parents, I think many kids used the excuse that the console had a Biblical name to get it for Christmas! 🤣
It’s possible! I mean you never know!!
The reason of 'GENESIS' is a little bit unfair to me but waaaay better than 'TOMAHAWK'.
Yay.)
I didn’t know this! Bad enough the games are manufactured by the Chi-coms
Scott Williamson sounds very familiar 🤔
He made a few Lynx games!
Wow atari really dropped the ball back in the day dident they
Yes. But without Tom Kalinske it’s not like Atari would have had any success had they continued.
Eh I'll be happy knowing mine is both...the Analogue Mega Sg (sega genesis) :D
I use open emu and you can also choose either as you like
well, all i knew was the sega genesis, and everytime someone says megadrive i just dont know what old sega console they are talking about.
Now you know the rest of the story!
0:04 dammnit
I think the Sega Mega Drive was a better name but I got use to the name Genesis so oh well I love the name Mega CD over Sega CD but that's just me LOL
Mega sounds cooler. Oh well too late now
@@GTV-Japan exactly I know right
Oh No...😱

P.S. Thanks for the video, that was really interesting!)
No problemo
I always looked at "Genesis" as an odd name, for a few reasons. One, there's the obvious religious association with the word, and as a kid being forced to sit through boring church crap, the last thing I wanted were ties between religiosity and video games. The other being that, being the child of a huge Phil Collins fan, I assumed it had something to do with "old people" music, haha.
Well the root were is generation. So I see it just as an origin. Point. But weird that it came after the master system which wasn’t the master apparently
I know you said you’re not shutting off the channel but please please don’t shut off the channel 😭
Don’t worry! I have a few years left in the tank. When the day comes though I will let everyone know, have a proper finale and say goodbye. The channel will stay up too. Thanks for the support!
My god...

Haha. Top comment!
@@GTV-Japan what's the song @ 12:35 -- such a catchy hook
That’s from phantasy star iv
GAtari could have had the NES, Atari could have had the GENESIS
Atari Should have kept Nolan
The "byte" and "bit" discussion here is hilariously shallow. "Things shifted to bytes in the 90's" - oh really. How fast is your fiber? Gigabit. ... .... ...... Memory chips (ROM, EPROM, RAM) sizes were always sized in bits, not in bytes.
Well, games were always listed in megabits until CDs came around then the amount of data didn’t really matter but they always talked about the as 700 megabytes.
Your channel is great but I don’t prefer the name Mega Drive over Genesis.
That's ok!
"Genesis sounds cooler".... respectfully disagree! As a brit and being my childhood console, through my clearly bias glasses, Megadrive is the only true name 😋
… well it’s all I could add! Thanks for watching and happy new year 🥳
In México, I play whit my Sega Genesis!
(Not Mega Drive)
Woohoo!
