    What are your impressions of how Sega was regarded in Japan. What do you think about books like these? There are a bunch in Japan coming out often. Let's discuss!

      What do Japanese gamers themselves have to say about it?

      @GHZ J2391 then I guess we’d be playing on Nintendo and Sega machines and there’d be no Sony and Microsoft hardware

    I bought the kindle edition of the complete guide using my amazon Japanese account a few days ago.
    The disparity of popularity between the us and Japan was pretty striking, growing up in the us as a Japanese American. I only knew one friend in Japan who had a mega drive, and it was a really niche-y console in Japan at the height of its popularity in the US.
    It still has a die hard following in Japan, as there are these mega drive meetups in Tokyo that I’d love to go to one of these days.
    Edit: your videos are awesome 👍

      That is cool! Yea I’ve heard of meet ups and there are some xbox clubs too. I liked this book because it’s kind of like the flip side to all those import sections of 90s games magazines. Funny though you knew one person who had it but it feels like it had a presence when you think about all the games, hardware and promotion it had. Thanks for watching!

    That port was also on non tmss megadrives Europe and America. It made more uses than. Just a serial modem. Its used on dev kits as a debug port and also was used in its arcade version for connecting coin mechs etc.

    Awesome look at the Mega Drive, I recall ads for import games back in the early nineties and really not sure about what a mega drive was as a kid, I had heard of the Genesis but didn't put 2 and 2 together believe it or not, and in the ads I just remember the Mega Drive just seeming hugely popular due to the extensive line up of games, and just how expensive they where, and quite simply the games themselves, titles like Altered Beast & Ghouls and Ghosts where titles I only recognized as high quality arcade games., I didn't really nail down what a Mega Drive was ( a Japanese Sega Genesis) until the Sonic 1 days.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 років тому +2

      I’m sure a few people thought the same. It’s funny how until Sonic Sega was really on the arcade games at home path then just dropped it. Thanks for watching

      @@GTV-Japan at the time I was more familiar with the TurboGrafx, which I considered next gen ( oddly enough it truly wasn't in Japan) while the Genesis was this real exotic machine me and my friends as kids considered it to be something only rich people owned, funny because at that point the TurboGrafx 16 was in fact more expensive but soon after dropped in price due to it's sudden lack of popularity, and seemed to lessen in value while the Genesis retained it's value, but yeah I remember fondly the days when everyone had an NES, and perhaps a kid or two had ( at least in my neighborhood ) a TurboGrafx which went for 199.99, ..and strangely no one had a Genesis that actually went for 189.99 with Altered Beast, ..but man I remember wanting one so bad as I would stand around arcades and watch ppl drop quarters into games like Golden Axe, Altered Beast, n Ghouls n Ghosts fantasizing about owning one.

      It was the same for me. The TG16 was actually popular and even had game rentals! But by the end of 1990 Sega took over and NEC basically gave up

    I did not even know about most of these add ons, really informative video Gaijillionaire.
    12:25 I was so pumped to hear Battle Mania aka Trouble Shooter, my favorite game on SEGA Genesis.
    I feel that SEGA had the best sound out of all the systems at the time, thanks to the Yamaha chip. I still listen to SEGA music daily, some of my favorites are Ecco Tides of Time, Adventures of Batman and Robin, Alisia Dragoon, Thunder Force IV, Battle Mania, Golden Axe, Master of Monsters and Elemental Masters just to name a few. I would use the headphone jack as a kid, since the neighbors complained about the video game music once.
    I was wondering if there are stores in Japan that sells older video games and memorabilia, like Mandrake Japan which sells toys? Would you ever consider doing a video walking through the store?

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 років тому +2

      I love the genesis/md sound too. I always thought the snes sound was too flat, not rich enough, even though for voices and certain Sfx it was better. I do actually work 2 minutes away from Akihabara and go there a lot. But stores are very strict about filming inside, some anyway. A few months ago there was a big ordeal of someone filming inside a sushi restaurant which you’d think who cares but the shop wasn’t happy. I did a video long long time ago walking thru a store near me that was kind of like that though

    • @GameTechRefuge
      @GameTechRefuge 5 років тому +1

      UA-cam has changed allot in the last 4 years or so. It's getting harder to find new content and creators. My channel is a small geeky hobby channel, a way of giving back to the community. If some one else finds my channel & gets the info they need to mod/repair their console or learns from my mistakes, I'm happy. I suspect that some creators are promoting their videos through add sense. Picking up SUBs and riding that train for a bit and then doing it all over again when subs plateau or fall off. I have considered doing a experiment to test the theory out but I'd rather put that money back into the hobby. Daddy needs a MEGA CD model 1 :)

    • @GTV-Japan

    Another excellent video ! They released so much hardware for the system, very interesting.
    I don't know if it was successful or not but I can tell you that Genesis games compared to Mega Drive are less expensive.
    One example, Castlevania Bloodlines, us copy in good condition and complete go for about $100-$150.

    Great video! Always interesting to see books about stuff that's not effectively documented. The XE-1AP is interesting, as its manufacturer (Dempa Micomsoft) ported Namco's arcade games to Japanese PCs, and made other interesting controllers as well. I used to own one, the XE-1 Pro, but sold it. I've heard that the AP is called by some "horseshoe crab" because of its design. It also had an adapter that allowed its use on the Famicom (XF-1, I believe).
    One thing I've been interested in, especially after your 2800 video, is the story of consoles that were big over here (particularly second-gen ones) in Japan. For instance, there's very little documentation on the stories of the Intellivision, Vectrex, and Odyssey 2 in Japan. Are there any books over there that would cover consoles such as those?

    So, the Genesis/Mega Drive was originally released on October 29th, 1988? In that case, that means that the Genesis/MD is a Scorpio. As a Scorpio myself, I'm glad to know that. Anyway, good video. With the exception of that one Japanese ad for DJ Boy showing the offensive-looking Black characters (the uncut versions of that game in themselves are a UA-cam video waiting to happen), I really liked the information and pictures of what I was able to see, language barrier withstanding. @GTV-Japan  5 років тому

      Someone else commented that it’s on the us and eu models but I’m not sure if it was on later model 1s as they had a few revisions before the model 2. Shame that the modem wasn’t sold outside Japan because it would have been real popular! As a side note all land line telephones in Japan are charged a few yen per minute to make a call, local or long distance so using that would have been pretty expensive

I'd be interested to know how popular the banking application was, since the Famicom had something similar as well and I remember it being fairly popular. I was a casual gamer when I was a kid. My first two consoles were the Nes (in 1985) and Sega Master System (in 1986). I liked gaming but at that time I played during the weekend's. It didn't help that I have a medical disability growing up (hydrocephalus plus I'm blind in my right eye). My parents often discouraged me from playing as they thought I would damage my good eye.
    Unfortunately, as I aged I was prevented from doing many things normal kids could do. I wanted to play football as a kid but my parents weren't having it. Further, I have never cared what my doctors tell me. I didn't care and did many things I was not supposed to do. Like getting into BMX tricks in empty pools at skate parks. This terrified my family and they couldn't watch me all the time. I used to get so angry when my brothers and sister got to join in all the team sports...I couldn't. Had it not been for gaming...
    At any rate, when I got my Sega Genesis in 1989...that was it. I became a diehard gamer. Never in the history of gaming had a home machine encapsulated the arcades before. My parents relented and as long as I stayed out of trouble and did well in school...they bought me games like you wouldn't believe. My homes (parents were divorced) became the hang out spot for the neighborhood kids. Further, my parents tried like Hell to outdo each other. From.that point foward (1989) I had just about every console that hit the year it did.
    I remember Christmas of '91 getting my Snes and Sonic the Hedgehog on the same day. I had a huge 16-bit shootout that lasted the entire Christmas vacation....Sonic rained supreme to me. F-Zero was amazing but so was Strider. It was an amazing time to be alive and a gamer. EA actually made games for gamers, Japanese RPG's were amazing, game companies battled it out for our money, and arcades were absolutely everywhere. Hell, every gas station and laundry mat from here to Timbuktu had at least 2-3 of the newest machines out.
    Thank you for making this and warming an old Sega fan's heart. You my friend, need to package these up and sell them as volumes.
    Oh my God, why didn't they release the Model 2 Mega Drive that features Red, White, and Blue colors here in the Statesm?! I loved my Model 1 Sega Genesis "High Definition Graphics" but I would have been all over that!

      There’s a kindle edition of the complete guide. You just need to create an account on amazon.co.jp and you can pay with any credit card as long as amazon supports it.

    While I'm not a fan of the Mega Drive, I love the Saturn. It's my favorite Sega system.
    I'm looking forward to its 30th Anniversary to see if any company releases guides like these.
    I hope that you cover some of them, so I'll have an idea on whhich one to get.

    Early western units do have the rear 9 pin modem port. Not sure if this is an error in the perfect guide or in research, but as it was only used on the Mega Modem, it’s not that important.

      It’s the time travel device in Voyagers which was on for one season in 1982. When the light on the Omni was red it meant something was wrong with history. It’s up to the Voyagers to make it right. When the timeline is back on track the light turns green. I watched every episode and it was awesome! Each episode has a history lesson in it and in the credits the star, Jeff would say to learn more take a voyage down to your local library because it’s all in books. There are tons of references to things I like that no one really gets on the channel but for the one person who gets it, it must be special.

    I never really thought the Mega Drive was a failure in Japan. I guess for a more recent modern example, look at the Gamecube, was pretty much in 3rd place in the west, still had a lot of games made for it.
    So really, just cause something doesnt fly off the shelf, doesnt mean its unsuccessful.
