- My quick thoughts on the FONO MM MK5
Setting up the unit was literally - plug and play.
The first thing that impressed me straight off the bat was the detail and noise floor. It’s clean, crisp with a nice sound stage, without being to bright in sound. The sound on this unit is nicely balanced. If you have a entry level stylus and this unit, compliment it with a decent stylus and you may/hopefully get some great sound from it.

Something I do, I always turn the Fono/Phono preamp on first, then the pre and then the power amp.

Yeah, I think I could arrange something. Both are good phono preamps. Just comes down to your preference.

I can give you my take I have owned fono mk3 and project tube there is a difference rega is more dynamic with more bass, but project has a slight warmth that some may prefer and felt little more flat in depth imaging, I've upgraded to the rega aria and there is a big difference, so I'd be. Tempted to save and go for a higher end product but thats just my take..
I will also be reviewing the Aria in the next fortnight. Currently working on the Anthem MRX740 receiver.
It's exactly the same internally as the MK3 the case is a new cosmetic style l like it and can say the case is better than the mk3 more solid imo it is a better built unit than the Rega MK3 it's a winner always has been in my opinion l thought Rega may have bettered the components internally but maybe next time, a good unit and punch's well above its weight imo a winner 🎉
I'm considering this, along with a couple others for my first external preamp (Rega P2, AT-VM640ML, Denon X4700). I listened to one yesterday and was impressed, but I don't know if it was because the speakers were worth 4x the price as mine (Q-acoustics towers vs Klipsch RP-600M2)
I have it running on second turntable with a Ortofon 2M Stylus and still sounds good. I think, ‘this is just me’ it’s something you wouldn’t have to upgrade in a hurry (MK5).
I found It’s a pretty solid little unit.

Hello from Germany, a quick question, is the Rega Phono MK5 better than the phono part in the Elex R MK4 and does it make sense to buy it?

Hi,
Elex MK4 is nice piece of kit and the on-board phono would be decent. I haven’t listened to the Elex stereo amp for some time. So comparing it to MK 5 fono is difficult, however having a dedicated phono stage like the MK5 - you might see improvements. Though it might only be a 25%. - 30% improvement.
I cannot guarantee, I need to listen.
