Stumbled upon your channel through the algorithm recently and I've went through a lot of your content by now. Due to the war in Ukraine and the following reactions in my country to that conflict I've recently felt the urge to just be a little bit better prepared as a civilian and I'm looking to start learning some new skills. I really enjoy your way of talking about topics and your videos have given me a lot of interesting things to think about.
Yep. Absolutely. Stay up on your proficiencies and strive for improvement in all that you do. Get the best you can afford, cuz your life depends on it, and hopefully can afford a redundancy. Master the basics, and stay fresh on how you apply your knowledge and tactics. Refresh often, so you're not trying to figure it out last minute. Proper planning, realistic visualization before a situation occurs, and be in harmony with your tools. Keep up the good work.
I'll admit none of my rifles are zeroed, I will go fix this now! Edit: I switched all the optics, my main gun got a new mount with a piggyback red dot. Will zero that one first.
Good stuff. I have found the number of excuses and cliches people say are in direct inverse proportion of the confidence and ability of people saying them, whereas the amount of humility is in absolute direct indicator.
Bros spitting some truth here. A huge segment of the gun community can talk a lot of talk, but not perform when put to the test. I am a training nerd and take half a dozen classes a year. I always invite my friends, and they would always deny. Then the greenwood mall shooting happened and I asked if they think they could pull it off. Both said absolutely, so I put a full man size target out at distance, and let them use their full size pistols. They hit 1 or 2 shots in 3 full size magazines. I cleaned the drill flawless, and told them thats what training gets you. One agreed and has been my most reliable training buddy since, and he can clear the dickens drill on demand now. The other still refuses, still cant shoot the drill, but swears to your face he can ace it any time he wants. Same guy couldnt hit a man size target in a full 20rd mag with a sandbagged 308 ar10 at 300 yards. He doesnt learn, and is a solid example of your average gun owner.
A lot of people I shoot with can shoot decent enough with their red dot pistol but hand them a Glock with normal sights and they can’t even hit the paper
I got a few friends who vastly overstate their capabilities. "Oh yeah I can shoot quarter inch groups with my 11.5 at 200" type shit. But then I bring them to the range and one of them in particular doesn't even shoot. He just talks the whole time and maybe shoots ~10 rounds. He maybe goes to the range once or twice a year but then claims to be excellent at every facet of shooting whether it be uspsa or prs. Edit: One thing you can do to increase your capabilities as a shooter would be get one of those new garmin chronos. I got a chance to try one of those when I was doing my RSO duty at my gun club. We have a 500m range and the club always needs guys to do RSO duty. So I did mine recently and of course there was a dentist who came out to shoot and he had all the nice stuff and man lemme tell ya, that dentist could really shoot. He had one of those garmin's though and I tried it and combined the data with a ballistic calculator and it worked so insanely well that I definitely plan on getting a Garmin now.
One of things I look at is safety. A professional doesn't just blow off firearms safety. Gotta agree with your story too. Guys running their mouth a lot typically aren't squared away either.

Dang, PA develops scoliosis when he starts shooting! I like the stump talks and agree that not enough people are "Minuteman" ready to grab their kit at a moment's notice and set up security for their neighborhood or property.
Any dude who's truly confident isn't coming off as cocky, or arrogant. That shit ain't confidence and really holds a man back from improvement. Gotta stay humble, introspective, and have self accountability so you're not a liability to those around you. Best thing to do, is admit your lack of preparedness, and take that moment as an opportunity to receive assistance from those around you who are, so you can grow and become an asset. Great video!
Great stump talk! I have guns I trust and guns I fiddle with. The ones I trust are mostly factory, mostly old, and I while I run them on occasion to verify everything and maybe adjust zero a little, I’m not making functional modifications. At my age, unfortunately, my eyes are becoming my greatest liability so my gear updates are around sights/optics. My most-trusted carry handgun is approaching 30 years old and it’s getting time to mill its slide for a red dot.
As a Canadian im limited to the kind of stuff I can get. But I can damn sure shoot an SKS like a wizard lol. I do have some AR 180s but they really aren't that great. Hopefully out next conservative PM will follow through on his promise of reversing the AR bans so I can buy a Daniel defense or something.
CZ Bren 2's are still legal if you're just lookin for a reliable semi-auto 5.56 and not worried about it being the AR platform. So are B&T APC223's if you wanna dish out a bit more cash. I'm not sure if they can just repeal that law overnight when they get in, as much as I'd like them to.
It's uncommon to find someone who's ready to go out of the truck. It's rare to find someone who's _able_ to make hits at 300+ Most firearms owners struggle to simply maintain muzzle awareness. Ain't got to get ready, if you stay ready.
I have a mental list for this “Professional” that goes in no particular order. 1. Shooter 2. Kit 3. Time Management 4. Fitness 5. Reliability Fitness is such a beaten dead horse but it is the foundation in which a squared away individual can be gauged imo. Not only physically but mentally. Kit and having it or not has nothing todo with what I’m looking for. It’s more a tidiness and familiarity of what is where and why. Shooting is the same as mentioned in the video, are you actually familiar with your particular system. Time Management/Reliability could be one thing, but are absolutely tied in with being a professional. IMO This is what I look for when working with others to decide whether I would call on them if it was warranted. BUT as stated if you’re just a hobbyist that’s cool to, I just prefer to work with people who are professionals in their hard/soft skills.
I have a friend who truly refuses to go out and sight his rifle in. He went shooting with us about a year ago and he’s sights on a shorty AR were so off, that he was shooting about 6 inches left at about 20 yards, no exaggeration. To this date, I don’t think he has sighted that rifle in.
You can tell when someone needs more practice and when it's legitimately an equipment issue. On a side note; a lot of my coworkers think I'm some crack shot because I was in the military,I started reloading, and I've shot out to 600yd on occasion. Granted, I probably shot more than all of them put together but I've had to correct them often enough. Seen a guy who’s CCW gun had a mounted red dot that was literally jiggling around because it was so close to falling off. Scopes/Optics mounted to the handguard and not upper receiver. Unsure of what their optic adjustments are because the rifle they’ve owned for a year or more wasn’t ever actually zeroed ever. These are just things I’ve personally seen. There are many more indicators that somebody isn’t squared away because they never actually bothered to use what they bought, let alone learned the gear.
