- How does color grading work? ... I mean like actually? In this Episode of Film Science we dive into the 1s and 0s, building Resolve in Excel, recreating the math of grading and learning what each tool actually does. You'll be a pro at understanding what Lift, Gamma, Gain and almost every other control do.

Coming home from a party, want to sleep, see some guys building davinci in Excel, don't go to sleep. Thanks, I'll be having weird dreams this night 😅
Just found your channel, and wow. What a masterpiece, especially all of the animated visuals!
Though when you mentioned ACES as a linear color space, I must clarify - the ACES we use day-to-day does not have a linear transfer function. I guess what you meant to say is, that ACES (ACEScc/cct) is scene-referred, having a direct correlation to linear light values, while gamma 2.4 is a display-referred transfer-function. Though a linear transfer-function can be found when working with the ACEScg gamut in VFX, which is typically accompanied by a linear "gamma" or transfer-function.
Amazing video! Distinct lack of plain black tees tho 😳
We’re really breaking out the whole wardrobe just for you Jack
The graphs and examples are so tremendously helpful!
This is one of the best explanations of color grading that I've ever seen, keep up the awesome job!
I've being practicing color grading for about months now & with an artistic background I find it quite easy
this video quality is freaking insane
A genuinely brilliant explanation!
Thanks Taha! 😄

This was such a brilliantly created, wildly fun, and extremely informative video! Well done! Can't speak more highly about your channel!
Thanks so much 😄 stoked you enjoyed it!
Casually recreates resolve in excel, explains it all in 6:38. You blokes are insane! This video freaking dense, that luminance analogy hits like a truck.
If any of you other viewers are having trouble understanding this vid, it does move kinda fast - DunnaDidIt did a great color grading basics tutorial that explains the effects of the knobs that helped me understand why lift, gamma and gain are so useful.
I really love the " Film science " episodes please keep making more and cover more areas and elements, you guys are making videos and explaining these concepts in very efficient way so everybody could understand I had never come across these types of informative and interesting videos about filmmaking across the internet so please keep making and ( I'm gonna leave this comment in every episode of " film science " so you guys see it .)
and yesss this is fucking interesting . 🙃
Man this is so good. Hitting all of my love of filmmaking and love of nerdy science/maths right in the chest.
Thanks so much Aram! 🔥
This helped my understanding so much especially the difference between manipulating rgb and then using hue/luminance corrections 🙏
Love this technical shtuff.
So stoked you enjoyed it!
I‘ve just discovered your channel and you guys‘s videos are next level!!! Definitely a beautiful mix of great content and great visual. Just wow😳
