  • With her centenary program nearing the end, Flying Scotsman was to haul her last run of 2023, and with an uncertain future, maybe the last tour for good, hope not. So what a fitting way to celebrate the centenary celebrations of Flying Scotsman than to let her tackle the steepest main line gradient in Britain, the 1 in 37 Lickey Incline. With her tour heading towards Worcester from Cambridge in East Anglia, Flying Scotsman would head towards Birmingham via Peterborough and Leicester before heading to the destination of Worcester. The highlight of the run would be without question, Flying Scotsman's assault on the Lickey Incline on the return trip. For the Flying Scotsman runs, I take extra care when filming as I don't want to get in the way of too many people due to the popularity of the world's most famous steam engine.
However before the day started, I knew I had to come up with a different plan for my shot up the Lickey for Flying Scotsman compared to previous steam tours I've done before. Instead of Vigo Bridge where I went to film numerous steam tours in the past few years, I went instead to a lane that runs alongside the railway and to my surprise I saw a gap in the trees and better still, I could pan around which at Vigo Bridge it's hard to do. I set up nicely and surprisingly only a few people were nearby where I was. Flying Scotsman was held up just before Bromsgrove Station so it would be a dramatic run up the Lickey from a standing start at the bottom of the bank. Flying Scotsman sounded really nice and with the safety valves lifting and a cheerful whistle from the driver, it seemed everything was under control and even though the diesel did a lot of pushing (for obvious reasons) it was still worth seeing the Flying Scotsman powering up the Lickey, even it's for just one occasion.
I hope you enjoy the video. Feel free to leave a like, comment, and subscribe for more steam action from Full Steam Ahead.

How long did the run take?
Was it nonstop all the way?
