  • GMA Radio Television Arts-era bumpers for several shows, including new seasons of 21 Jump Street and Magnum PI, the '90 Miss Universe, and a behind the scenes special for Lea Salonga's Miss Saigon. All using the rainbow motif that the network used as their identity prior to the Kapuso rebranding more than a decade later.

    That was at that time na wala pang GMA PRIME at that time with "Black Rider" at "Widow's War" na halos sakop na ang evening programming. Uso dati ang mga ganyang (weekly) primetime programming, iba-iba at hindi nagsasawa. I'm not judging the today's primetime programming, it's just some sort of throwback na dapat i-adapt ng TV networks for this generation, hindi yung puro patayan, suntukan, sabunutan, about sa kabit... everything na punapalabas araw-araw.
    Another CLASSIC bumpers compilation finally digged ❤ I wasn't even born in 1990.

TV production is still a business.

      Actually, there's no sufficient cable at that time here in the Philippines. Back in the early 60s to late 90s still nagiging vertical programming pagdating sa top rated na US Shows imagine parang Netflix nung mga panahon yun. Tapos low cost production pa pagdating sa Filipino shows except ang malakas na local shows which is IBC-13.

      @@mangdannyboy Dati, pareho ang sa Philippine TV at American TV pagdating sa scheduling ng genres ng anumang TV shows. From 70s to 90s, sa hapon, araw-araw ang ilang local daytime soap operas (like the original Anna Liza, Anna Luna, the original Yagit, etc.); sa gabi, iba-iba ang programming between weeknights, mapa-local or foreign. Sa US hanggang ngayon, sa hapon, may daily afternoon soap operas doon (e.g. The Young and the Restless); sa gabi, iba-iba bawat gabi (e.g. Law & Order franchise with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Chicago franchise with Chicago Fire, etc.).

    It strikes me that na noong nag-bagong bihis ang imahen ng GMA bilang Rainbow Satellite Network noong 1992, pinagpatuloy yata ni The Mole ang pagvo-voiceover sa mga plugs bago mapalitan na ni Al Torres noong sumunod na taon.

    Also that time sumikat ang Channel 7 pagdating sa local programs such as That's Entertainment, Eye to Eye, Vilma, Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko, Lunch Date, Tanghalan ng Kampeon, Penthouse LIVE!, Lovingly Yours Helen, at marami pang iba. That time RPN 9 and IBC 13 ang sakalam pagdating sa top rated TV local shows. Uso pa dati ang vertical programming ng mga US shows especially re-run the air ng ABS CBN 2, RPN 9, IBC 13, and GMA 7.

    Ah yes. The 70s to early 90s era of the Kapuso network. Ang sarap manood sa kanila dati kasi hitik na hitik sila sa mga US series at US movies. They did have their own local in-house content, though most of them were either a coprod, 3rd party produced or a blocktimer. Cos when ABS returned after People Power, they focused more on producing their own content, although they did try adding US dramas and animated series to their Friday night lineup, especially during the early to the mid 90s

      Dalawa lang kasi ang studio noon ng GMA (na naging tatlo when they started leasing sa Broadway Centrum in 1987). Looking at these bumpers, I kinda wonder if the reason why they offered so much Western content back then was partly because they were trying to capture the local American audience back when the US military bases in the country were still present.

    • @mangdannyboy
      @mangdannyboy 24 дні тому +2

      Not at all.
      Based on GMA’s history, it was part-intent, part-circumstance. The network had only two small studios from Day 1 of its TV operations, until they began leasing the old Westside Theater of Broadway Centrum and converted that into a TV studio in 1987 (making it 3 studios)…so they were limited with the amount of network-produced shows for years. Also, they wanted to target primarily the A-B classes then - especially when the GMA branding started in 1974.

      There are cable channels for those kinds of shows, to be appreciated in their un-dubbed, unadulterated glory. Mas ma-appreciate ba ‘yun ng masa audience na mas target ngayon ng GMA at ng TV5? I don’t think so.
      Besides…kung puro imported series lang din ang meron ngayon, I’m sure, hindi lang iisa ang magrereklamo, “paano naman ang sariling atin?” or something like that.
      Sure, we can be idealistic. Pero ang industriya ng telebisyon lalo na sa ‘Pinas ay business pa rin. Hatakan ng mas maraming viewers. At ‘pag mas maraming viewers, mas may advertising. At ‘pag mas maraming advertising, mas maraming kita. Sad reality…but it’s reality. Kagaya ng mga kuwento ng kabit - ‘wag nating i-deny at magmalinis. ‘Yan din ang reality ngayon. (And…before anyone says it: No, hindi ‘yan “itinuturo” ng mga teleseryeng may ganyang storyline ngayon. But that’s for another conversation.)
