If you see the low frame rates of some versions, you wonder how anyone could have fun while playing this, but that's how we played back then. For us it was the peak of technology at that moment on this specific computer :) In racing games you had to think in advance, because in the next frame, you could be crashing into the car.
+ClassicGaminer 2016 yeah found it in a secondhand shop thought it was weird it wasent in an original case or ea style case, I believe it was the same clase as star control
Is it just me or is it quite bizarre how slow the Amiga version plays? I mean it was never a machine that good with 3D graphics, but still. That soundtrack will always rock though.
@@MagikGimp even the 030/A2630 was already for sale in 1989, for the rare professionnal whose can afford it at the time, like the trick to replace the 68K by a 010.
The SNES version definitely. Genesis was ok but the steering didn’t feel right, plus the slowed down SNES ost sounded just so much cooler, yet sleazier. I feel like an 80s coke lord or a Wall Street sleaze bag who makes millions selling BS stock tips about to go for a spin in one of my toys whenever I hear that theme.
Maybe with me being a former Amigaphile, I might be a little bit biased, but it seems to me that the Amiga version was the only one that had a semi-convincing engine sound. And it wasn’t the only one capable of using samples; the SNES was way more capable in that department.
Sega Genesis version, was the most close to what Sim Racing is... SNES version is awesome too, but it's another game, it is not the classic Test Drive 2... Anyway, it is important to mention how this game, was the only drive simulator, that results more realistic on console than on computer
The Amiga have the best visuals and sounds, but the MD and SNES versions are faster, and I think they could be better, bad design and palette use on both.
+RyuHayabusa06 How's it surprising? That was actually a bad conversion altogether, since SNES had sprite scaling and rotation and it didn't seem to do any of that. It was just a much smoother running game, but each sprite was re-drawn instead of using hardware scaling.
SharkByte LLC The SNES does not have sprite scaling and rotation. It can only scale and rotate backgrounds. Anytime you see something that looks like it's scaling a sprite it's not. They're usually using one of the background layers as if it were a sprite.
Really interesting. Megadrive version has great speed, Snes version looks REALLY great. ST version has great sound which is always surprising. Music is probably doable by streaming a low quality sample but the ingame engine sound is great too, for ST. Amiga version was mine but even back then I felt it was a bit slow. Otherwise great, but frankly almost always the faster versions of old games age better.
I also like the Amiga version best, the C64 is the best 8 bit version. Unfortunatly, they didn't tun off the audio filter on the Amiga version. But on the A1000 it couldn't be disabled anyway. Interesting: The MS-DOS, Apple II GS and Atari versions is showing an Amiga 1000 for the computer player. There are three 65xxx versions in this video: The C64 with a 6510 @ 0.985 MHz, the Apple II GS with a 65C816 @ 2.58 MHz and the SNES with a 65C816-compatible Ricoh 5A22 @ 3.54 MHz. But this one has 8 DMA channels and graphics functions like the Amiga's Copper. Here's a video of the C64 version played on a SuperCPU with 65C816 @ 20 MHz. ua-cam.com/video/mIPJWc59hvU/v-deo.html
I don't know why the PC, ST and Amiga versions look so slow, it's not like the systems are not powerful enough. it doesn't matter what the display says, it feels like you are driving at 5 kph. I don't know if it's the game locked to a very low framerate or what. test drive 1 feels a lot faster and better, at least on PC.
I'll never understand why (dumb) people laud the ZX Spectrum. That thing, even for its time, was a piece of garbage. Terrible graphics and sound, all ports to it were by far the worst.
You should've turned on the music for the SNES version. Wonderful soundtrack that for some strange reason is off by default. Could half understand their decision if you had to select between music or sound effects, but you don't.
+Gaming History Source cartridges are different on Genesis I meant o have one n apparently there's 2 different versions cart n labels I'll check it out after some cupodcast
Amiga looks better? Are you blind people? Snes version is much better than the rest. Different zones, weather effects, riding at night. Snes really kill other version. No need to protect the Amiga, where it does not deserve it.
SNES machine didn't existed before 3 years after the Amiga version of this game, so the SNES version is a much newer game, from the 90's, not the 80's.
According to this video, how I see the different versions: ZX Spectrum, Amstrad, MSX are terrible. Genesis/Megadrive, Atari, Amiga have that darker/lighter road surface that I downright loathe, so sorry fans, I simply unable to like those. 😜 C64 looks playable, but I think MS-DOS has a slightly better look, while Apple is the same as the MS-DOS with better sounds. Super Nintendo is the winner.

I used to play the C64 version a lot, but the frame rate seems ridiculous now. It's like 3 fps.
This is the only Test Drive video that shows the Amstrad CPC version, awesome video as always!
+ClassicGaminer 2016 yeah found it in a secondhand shop thought it was weird it wasent in an original case or ea style case, I believe it was the same clase as star control
The Atari ST versions appears to run at a much higher frame rate than all of the others. Looks very nice =)
Wow Atari ST version is astonishing. Sound, UI, WOW
Is it just me or is it quite bizarre how slow the Amiga version plays? I mean it was never a machine that good with 3D graphics, but still. That soundtrack will always rock though.
worse, it seems like it displays 6 frames, pauses for a little and the displays 6 more and so on
it relies a lot on the CPU inside the Amiga, an accelerator card gives more framerate
@@CLS2086 Well obvs. But the game came out in '89.
@@MagikGimp even the 030/A2630 was already for sale in 1989, for the rare professionnal whose can afford it at the time, like the trick to replace the 68K by a 010.
Maybe its emulated. The creator says he did not include apple because could not emulate.
With each video here i think how much they could do with the zx spectrum. Im really impressed
The best programmers of Europe start with a zx Spectrum
You don't know how much better you made my shitty day with this TD2 comparison video!
+Westwurtzli I'm glad I could shine some lite on your bad day. :)
While the Amiga version looks the best, the SNES and Genesis versions look more fun because they run faster.
Yeah, the 16-bit consoles win here due to smoothest framerate which makes the game more playlable and enjoyable. Nice avatar btw, epic game.
Not to mention they had music, which I found odd.. or did I miss something? lol
The Amiga Version also has the best engine sounds by far.
Hell yeah!
The home computer versions had what would today be called Expansion Packs.
The Amiga is the best version of em' all!
Sega Genesis indeed ...
Had this on my Amiga.Best version for me but I like the look of SNES and C64 did a good port! Thank you.
Maybe with me being a former Amigaphile, I might be a little bit biased, but it seems to me that the Amiga version was the only one that had a semi-convincing engine sound. And it wasn’t the only one capable of using samples; the SNES was way more capable in that department.
Amiga the Best!
As far as audio/visual goes, the Amiga version is leaps and bounds ahead of any other port.
Back in the day, I had this on the c64 and then, later, on Amiga with the el cheapo AdSpeed accelerator (double cpu speed.) Ran great on that!
Nice compare review for TD2. I prefer play in this game on PC (MS-DOS), but Amiga, Apple II, Sega Genesis and Atari ST looking good too.

Oh lord, I remember buying this game for C64 at Egghead Software of all places
i got motion sickness by the high framerate of MSX version. Thankfully i had my dramamine pills handy.
Surprsingly the SNES port seems to be the fastest moving of all the ports.
+RyuHayabusa06 How's it surprising? That was actually a bad conversion altogether, since SNES had sprite scaling and rotation and it didn't seem to do any of that. It was just a much smoother running game, but each sprite was re-drawn instead of using hardware scaling.

That's about the only thing it has going for it, since they removed the interesting scenery elements.

This is why I was a console gamer back in the day.
The MSX games they are mostly ports of ZX Spectrum with sound and more color.
Commodore engine sound makes me dizzy for some reason. It does sound more like an engine than many other versions but it makes my head spin.

Yes, this is a original Amiga game. Apple II GS also played the Amiga module! : )
if only I had 1 mhz more
the c64...
does the dos version have no adlib? it would make sence to always use it because it was the most widely used soundcard for dos.
+MrDerOutsider DOS version really didn't have an option to use adlib.
+MrDerOutsider this was the time when adlib /sb was so new that some games we're developed even before the sound cards we're released!
MrDerOutsider I believe it only had pc speaker
12:29 so refreshing
The Spectrum version sure has great sound...
+CarozQH I think it's the best version out of all of them. The sound design is amazing and the graphics are, even to this day, unreal. 11/10 - IGN
This is the 48k version. On a 128k Spectrum it had the same sound as the Amstrad and MSX versions. Still not exactly playable, of course. :)
I forgot, you did miss a port for this game, there was a port for the Apple Macintosh.
+ClassicGaminer 2016 I know about it.. but couldn't emulate it.
+Gaming History Source There was a footage for the port somewhere on UA-cam.

test drive 1 feels a lot faster and better, at least on PC.
The hardest enemy in this game was the framerate.
Time and cops.
snes version seems really good
Why did they even bother with the spectrum version?
MS-DOS > All
At Commodore Amiga the Diablo has the Countach dashboard. LoL
The "Diablo" is a 25th anniversary Countach u Clown
SNES version is at 60 FPS.
+WCHB except for the scenery, only the road lines seems to move fast. That's weird.
BOUT TIME!!!
Amiga clearly the winner
There was also C128 version that looked exactly like C64 but run faster.
I think there is the C64 that might has built in to run faster on C128, haven't found any C128 in existence version yet.
just when I thought MSX version was slow, then comes C64 3 fps
I'll never understand why (dumb) people laud the ZX Spectrum. That thing, even for its time, was a piece of garbage. Terrible graphics and sound, all ports to it were by far the worst.
SEGA Genesis Wins!
SNES version the best, but Amiga version have muscle car pack.
Great game on Amiga, Atari, Genesis, SNES, Apple II GS, and C64. The other versions sucks.
You should've turned on the music for the SNES version. Wonderful soundtrack that for some strange reason is off by default. Could half understand their decision if you had to select between music or sound effects, but you don't.
You couldn't of done a comparison just on covers n carts alone Genesis had 2 different carts
+Real Game Master Not sure what you mean.. but if it's box arts you want.

+Gaming History Source cartridges are different on Genesis I meant o have one n apparently there's 2 different versions cart n labels I'll check it out after some cupodcast
+MillerSIRealGameMaster hi just looked it up I can find 3 versions on google and my copy is different so that's 4 variations I know of
Snes e Genesis are the best, both runs better
Snes win :)
Amiga looks better? Are you blind people? Snes version is much better than the rest. Different zones, weather effects, riding at night. Snes really kill other version. No need to protect the Amiga, where it does not deserve it.

Didnt think the super nes had games with graphics as shit as this
SNES version was best
They all look pretty primitive by today's standards for a racing type game but I'd say the Super Nintendo looked the best.
