It's both really sad and really wonderful how they joke about Kevin adopting Nick when really it was Brian who had custody of him while they were on tour initially back in the day. Sad because what kind of parents are willing to do that but also wonderful that Nick had Kevin. All of them needed him.
Not custody. Brian had guardianship. As it would be necessary when one of Nick's parents couldn't be in town as the band started to have success and to spend a lot of time on the road.
