    Right on. I see Screen Prism and Coen Brothers and I don't hesitate. That was fantastic as usual. This channel dominates when it comes to putting out consistent, quality videos that are super thought out and insightful - just as the Coen Bros. dominate consistent quality films - films that I walk out of with my head blown apart. You know it's a Coen Bros. film when you're still thinking about it three days later.

    Director auteurs are my favorite directors. Especially when they both write and direct their own visions. Quentin Tarantino, Terrence Malick, Martin Scorsese, Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Christopher Nolan, Pedro Almadovar, Ingmar Bergman, Luis Bunuel, Daron Aronofsky, Coen bros, David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, Guillermo del Toro, Lars von Trier, Richard Linklater, Stanley Kubrick, Fritz Lang, David Fincher, Akira Kurusawa, Michael Haneke, Takashi Miike, Sergio Leone, Dario Argento, Alejandro Jodorowsky, even Jean Renoir, Roman Polanski, Brian de Palma, Francis Ford Coppola, Jean-Luc Godard, Terry Gilliam, and several others are among my favorite auteurs.
    I can't think of any more off the top of my head, or from skimming my list of movies I've seen and rated, but I love these guys especially. Some other director auteurs were very good, too, but there were a number of others that I didn't care for.

    First heard about the Coens back in 82. From my art history prof. Who was their mom.
    Can't blame her for breaking the rules, don't think I could have resisted the temptation to brag about kids like hers. Explained about how when Joel got back from his first day in first grade she asked him how it went. "Not bad but it took a lot out of my day". So cut to 20 odd years later and I was looking at a photo of Joel and got it, why she liked me so much. It was a bit like looking at my own reflection. Haven't gotten that much use out of studying the master of Flemal but I sure did find out why Rena Cohen was the most popular prof in the department. She was utterly unforgettable.

    I think what this video is saying is that Coen Brothers movies reflect life as it is, NOT as we would have it: often harsh, utterly unpredictable, and apparently meaningless, where the innocent sometimes suffer cruelly and the guilty sometimes get away with it. I think recognition of those universal truths are probably why Apocalyptic Jews, in the days of the Maccabean Revolt, invented Hell. It was their way of explaining how it all works out in the fullness of time.

    Lewyln Moss in No Country for Old Men doesn't make the mistake of taking the money, anyone in their right mind would. His mistake was to go back to the crime scene to provide aid and water to a wounded cartel member that he knew was bleeding out and would die, for this act of kindness he does it sets him on a dangerous path where hes running from the cartel and the phantom sicario Anton but he couldve easily left the country or state with his wife by this point but he doesnt because hes not an evil man, just a complicated one.

    • @RamblingSailors
      @RamblingSailors 2 роки тому +1

      No. I'm sure the brothers Cohen did not in any way intend to remake the show.
      But.
      The movie is about a directionless man who needs badly to come to terms with himself, a man pursued relentlessly by a mysterious, apocalyptic figure symbolizing his poor life choices catching up to him. The climax of the movie involves him coming to an epiphany about himself as he confronts this figure, revealing the function of the character to be transformative rather than fatal.
      All the while, incidentally, in a very non-standard courtship with Holly Hunter. :)
      The rest of the movies have nothing to do with each other. But those themes of the main character felt very similar.
      Not, I hasten to add, in a bad way. Both were beautiful stories and the Bros. C. can tell that story over and over in different ways and Ill watch it. :)

    It would be awesome to see your take on less mainstream directors, like Yasujiro Ozu, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Bergman, Agnes Varda, Akerman, Kaurismäki, Tarkovsky or Wong Kar Wai

    • @nl3064
      @nl3064 5 років тому

      1) Nuri Ceylan - why in the fuck would they waste a whole entire video on a mediocrity (a decent mediocrity, but still, for now, a mediocrity) that nobody's ever heard of just because YOU obnoxiously pester them? 2) How in the hell do you lump him in with those names that actually contributed something to the overall history of movies?

      Pay attention to the damn movie. Or read the novel. There was a tracking device in the case. They would've tracked him either way.

    Nothing about Jewish themes? They aren't exactly subtle with them a lot of the time. I think the fact the have this rather unusual upbringing of being Jewish Minnesotans really shows in a lot of their films.
