Change The Blade On A Circular Saw ~ My Ryobi Cordless Saw Gets New Life

  • How to change the blade in your circular saw. I recently received new blades for my Ryobi cordless circular saw so I immediately put in a new blade.
Changing blades in a circular saw is quite easy, but many people have actually never done it. Many people just keep cutting with the original blade forever as it gets slower and slower and starts to make sloppy cuts.
A new blade makes a cleaner cut and saves wear and tear on your saw motor.
FIRST - remove the battery or unplug the saw before you proceed for your safety.
There is a brake on your saw on the top somewhere. Pressing this button locks the blade in place so it will not rotate. This allows you to remove the retaining screw.
The retaining washer has an arrow on it showing which way to loosen or tighten the blade.
Turn the screw to loosen the blade and remove both the screw and washer.
Now you can lift out the old blade.
The blade guard of the saw has an arrow showing the direction of movement. The blade also has an arrow on it. These should both point in the same direction.
Put the blade in place and then the retaining washer. Now tighten the screw to lock the blade back in place while pressing on the blade brake.
Now replace the battery (on a cordless saw) or plug in the power cord. Turn on the saw for a second and watch the rotation of the blade. Make sure it is turning in the correct direction.
Now you can get back to work in your wood shop.

Thank you so much for this video. I just bought my Ryobi saw and have not worked with a circular saw before. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered the diagram in the instruction manual that would show how to change the blade was missing, as well as a diagram showing the location and purpose of each part. I now feel confident that I can knowledgeably insert the blade!

So clear and easy! Thank you! I am a 66 year old female and just cannot figure things out as well as I used to. I have a new saw and did not even try to read the instructions. Watching you do it was SO much easier! I did not have to bother a neighbor or hardware employee. Excellent instructions.

Thanks for the video. I got a free Ryobi circular saw with my battery kit I bought this week, and the instructions for putting the blade on the saw made it look like the spindle lock and the saw lock were one and the same. You couldn't tell by the diagram picture at all. So for a bit there I thought that I had been sent a saw that wouldn't lock the blade for removal. I guess when you know where it is that it is not complicated at all.
I do think the one they sent me is a return because the plastic blade cover that came with it was already cut open and there is a light scuff on the handle.
I just hope this thing works ok. We seem to be in an era where businesses no longer worry about their customer goodwill and will sell them returns. That happened to me with a lawnmower I ordered online from Lowe's that really was quite sick. (Fortunately the local store replaced that defective mower I was sent and gave me a discount on a new mower as well to make up for the hassle.) I digress, but I sure hope there isn't something wrong with this saw.
But at least I now have the new blade on it thanks to your assistance in properly locating the blade release lock. Or spindle lock; I guess that is what they are calling it.

First time putting blade in wasn’t shown here. On page 13 of my manual, Fig. 1, it shows a diagram, make sure to place G (inner blade washer) in to slot before/under blade, then put on blade, then F (outer blade washer), then put in screw and tighten. I tried putting them both on as found them on top of blade. Did not work, thankfully! So if you are a newbie like me, hope this helps! Happy sawing 😊

One very easy tip on which way to loosen for circ saws, table saws and miter saws is the nut ALWAYS loosens in the direction the blade spins.
Blade left on circ saws is usually reverse thread and blade right is normal.
