I, for one, wish they would continue to include the BluRay and 4K. With the price of 4K players, it’s not like many of us can afford to buy more than one player so having the BluRay means we can watch the movie in another room.
The frustrating thing is that nobody wants an A.I. remaster (remake is more accurate). Nobody in the world, not a single person wants it. There's just a few people who tolerate it or don't care, but that doesn't make the process a good thing.
Ok but at the end of the day it's just a tool and somebody's gonna pioneer it regardless...with the aim to achieve greater and greater results over the years. If the result looks great to a large majority of people then that's a win for the tool.
I think people often forget their great grandparents and grandparents never went to a theater and saw a movie in 4K resolution. I saw The Empire Strikes Back at one the best theaters in our area when it was released and it never looked as good as the 1080 release. And nobody was hearing a film in Dolby Atmos in the 40s-80s. So, if we can let Ai evolve to give us an even better restoration of a film, there is no harm.
@@nicholasthill7151. I mainly agree, but then it invites criticism otherwise the AI won’t see the revisions necessary to get to the point of amazing and improving results. The pixel peepers are a necessary evil in your scenario. I like the use of AI, but I think we are seeing the lack of QC on its implementation. There needs to be more scrutiny in its application to limit the amount of issues where the OPs concern of generative scenes becomes true.
Regarding Terminator, I think with 4K releases, people are focused on some kind of purity though I don’t think it exists. I think during the restoration process all kinds of trade offs and decisions have to be made. When the 4K goes on sale, I will buy it and compare it to the blu-ray.
Great review, Heath! Ordered the 4K release of NBN back in April! Really looking forward to seeing it at home. The Blu-ray is one of my favorites in my Collection.
To me, if it is the BEST-looking version available of the film currently available, even if it is not perfect or could use improvement, that is still the version I want. If a better/improved version happens to come along in the future, then that will then be the best/preferred version.
@@SlashManEXE Exactly, for example with Aliens and True Lies on 4K, I feel something like that. True Lies and Abyss 4K, while def imperfect, are still WAY better than the severely outdated DVDs.
On your comment about no blu-rays included its unfortunate because I do get use out of the blu-ray copy when bringing a specific movie over to a friend's to watch. Lots of friends still don't own 4k players. At least a digital code is included so that works fine for my purposes.
And Blazing Saddles could not be made today intact just as it was in 1974 & I'm so happy that the genius Mel Brooks did make it for us to enjoy forever
Blazing Saddles was also co-written by Alan Uger, Norman Steinberg (who wrote My Favorite Year) and Andrew Bergman, who wrote The In-Laws, Fletch and wrote and directed The Freshman, Honeymoon in Vegas and directed It Could Happen to You.
I'm excited for Terminator, Blazing Saddles and North by Northwest!! I was fortunate to see the new Terminator 4K transfer in theaters this past summer and I thought it looked great. I had a really cool experience seeing it on the big screen. I'm looking forward to getting my copy of T1 on 4K.
Fortunately I own all three of the classics on Blu-Ray so that won't be an issue for me. I have also ordered 3 of them on 4k and am happy with the description/reviews you gave. The exception here is Blazing Saddles which I didn't order, Mel Brooks is mostly a miss with me (although I love Young Frankenstein) and while I definitely acknowledge the importance Blazing Saddles has had on comedy and movies at large I just don't find it as funny as most.
Interesting about The Terminator. I've been holding off, waiting for reviews. I'm broadly happy with my current Blu-ray. What about the audio? Is the original sound on there (original gun effects?) If the disc has it, I'm sold! I'd like to get N/NW. I've only got the DVD of that one! In the UK, we usually inherited prints in cinemas that had done the rounds in the USA, so it was normal to see scratches and dirt when I was at the cinema. The ring in the top right hand corner and the film stock becoming extremely dirty, along with a sound bump, at a reel change was part of the movie experience. I actually miss that nowadays. Film, like you say, was imperfect! The lack of a Blu-ray with these 4Ks is annoying. I'm in a multigenerational household. I have one 4K TV in my room, but the others, including my parents' TV, are only HD and we like to watch films together. The house won't be all-4K for a looong time. My 4K collection started with combo sets before I owned a 4K TV or player. At this point, 4K is sufficiently niche, that I feel Blu-rays are still necessary with 4Ks.
Very exciting news. I really enjoyed your critique. I have on pre-order North by Northwest & Terminator. They both have been on my “must have” wishlist since I started collecting 4Ks. Now if Rebecca, Notorious and Strangers on a Train come to 4K, I’ll be very happy. WHY NO 4K?
Love your videos, Heath, and I love your love of cinema. However, when it comes to the James Cameron situation and the quality of the Park Road transfers, just because something looks good, doesn't mean it looks right. Imagine if they used this technology on a film like Stagecoach or Vertigo. That, in my mind, would be absolutely criminal. But when it's a film of a slightly newer vintage, such as The Terminator, we seem to be far more accepting of historical revisionism, because, really, that's what this is. It's also worth noting that this 4K release of The Terminator uses the exact same 2K transfer used for the 2013 remastered edition, so most likely there are no details on hand in this 2024 edition that were not also there eleven years ago. That being said, to each their own and all that.
I've been critical of several Cameron transfers, just not this one. And since this hasn't shipped to the public yet, you're going entirely on things you've heard from other people. The fact that you're more inclined to agree with negative opinions than my positive one says a lot. We need a lot less of this tribalistic echo chamber and a lot more people thinking for themselves. Most of the people trashing 4K releases are doing it to feel validated and to get clicks and engagement. I'll say it again: no transfer is perfect, but they are rarely the disasters a small group of fans make them out to be. Anyone arguing against this is just trolling.
@@CerealAtMidnight I said there's a difference between good and right. Perfect was never part of the equation. And I'm not stuck in any kind of an echo chamber, so please, don't do me like that. However, I am highly critical of this kind of digital retconning - which is my right as both a consumer and a cinephile. And for the record, I absolutely love 4K. Right now, I'm eagerly awaiting the 4K of Howard Hawks' Scarface, and if more studio titles had been given that kind of a treatment, with more care given to preserving the film as it was originally shown, then we'd all be better off for it. My two cents.
Love Blazing Saddles so funny a classic why people nowadays get so easily offended I've no idea but I was born in the 70s and grew up watching all these comedies during the 80s Caddyshack, Revenge of the Nerds, Porky's etc. everything was so much less pc and in my opinion funnier for it! Definitely want to check out Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as missed it at the theatres. Great reviews buddy 👍
I mainly agree as it’s pretty harmless, however it is a product of its time. There are plenty of comedy from back in the day that you might consider inappropriate that someone might just say “I wish people weren’t so sensitive these days”. Where do we draw this line and who decides?
So cool that Blazing Saddles got a new 4K transfer! I've been meaning to see the movie and eyeing the Blu-Ray since I missed the theatrical re-release that was in my area some months ago.
The first Terminator is my favorite film from the 80s and my favorite out of the franchise. However, I'm not getting this. The bou ray I have comes with a booklet and the image is perfect for me.
The reason for freeze-framing and zooming is not to say it looks good or bad- it is to see if you find the tell-tale signs of AI upscaling. There are very specific anomolies that only AI upscaling has.
Nice reviews, Heath!. I received Beetlejuice Beetlejuice yesterday and the other three today from GRUV. 👍🏻 P.S. I really enjoy Michael Keaton's performances, too!
I'm really happy that Terminator looks good. It's easily one of my favorite movies. Thanks, Heath! As always, I really appreciate it! God bless and stay safe!
Great films all and I definitely purchased each one. In the UK and Germany, the Blazing Saddles release contains a Blu-ray, which still has the TV pilot on it that is missing from the 4k disc.
The reviews of Terminator 4k seem to run contrary to my personal theatrical experience. In theater there was a very clean picture, no grain, very polished but the 4k reviews are saying that there is grain so i guess they tweeked the 4k transfer before sending it out to the factories for pressing. Which is good. I want a respectful preservation. And they also apparently included the mono mix, which for me is super important. I want those original sfx. The "new" ones are horrible. Its better to be given a choice with which sound track you listen to rather than being forced to do atmos or new 5.1 mix
Sad to hear that the 4K release of The Terminator has come from an old recycled source, finished in 2K and upscaled to 4K. I would love for it had an all new 4K transfer from the original 35mm master. I guess that wasn’t possible on this occasion.
i have the Remastered bluray of the terminator and i never had a problem with the way it looked i was looking for an excuse to cancel my steelbook preorder and get the standard version for cheaper i only preorder hoping WB would release a full box set with all the bells and whistles overseas like they have done with other releases but so far they haven't announced any other versions i will keep my preorder i just have not seen enough evidence to convince me otherwise while controversy sells especially if you are pixel peeping i just think its a nothing-burger
Awesome video! I'd love to hear how this edition of The Terminator compares to the 4K releases of The Abyss and True Lies (personally, I thought The Abyss looked good, but wasn't so thrilled with the look of True Lies).
I like seeing scratches and dirt on older movies. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Any movie where the picture is too perfect looking makes me dead inside. You're not supposed to see every little detail in every single movie. And back in the days of movies shot on film, going to soft focus with the picture was intentional and if a digital transfer can't handle that, it's going to ruin the scene.
Once new physical media releases become 4K only discs, I'm cut off. I truly believe 4K is a waste of money. I got suckered into blu-ray because Severin is slowly and gradually giving every single 'Video Nasty' on all the banned movie lists from back then glorious restorations from the original camera negatives. That I couldn't resist. Also when Code Red restored Slave of the Cannibal God and Jungle Holocaust on blu-ray, that was my turning point I accepted blu-ray into my life. I am a VHS and DVD purist. I have a ton of horror movies I know for a FACT will never go beyond the basic DVD format. Also my room is not big enough for even a 50 inch TV, so upgrading in size is not even an option for me. I knew this was coming, the ultimatum of 'upgrade to 4K or be left behind.' Once that happens it's all over, I will sell off my entire movie collection, hit the road and pursue my dream of becoming a big rig truck driver.
I still don’t understand why a movie like Silver Streak cannot get a release here because of it controversial thing, meanwhile in the context of the movie the character knows it’s wrong and doesn’t want to do the controversial thing. Meanwhile a movie like Holiday Inn gets a 4K release and advertised and a Christmas movie when it’s 1. Not a Christmas movie and 2. Does the Controversial thing in the exact context which makes it extremely offensive. The first time I watch Holiday Inn, I was shocked. I was in the comfort of my own home and I was looking around to see if anyone could see me watching this. My skin was crawling, I felt uncomfortable. Silver Streak needs some respect.
I don't think controversy has anything to do with Silver Streak not being on disc. It's available on digital platforms--you can buy it in HD right now on iTunes for $4.99. It probably has more to do with licensing, since it was distributed by 20th Century Fox, now a Disney company. When the dust settles on this Sony distribution deal with Disney, you may see it on disc then. In the meantime, grab that digital version! I did.
@ I actually have the German Blu-ray Chicago Expressen it’s a pretty nice disc but if it does get the upgrade maybe I will pick it up to get an official US release.
In VFX, we call it pixel-phucking. If you're watching movies on a frame-by-frame basis, you're not watching movies. In motion, the artifacting isn't noticeable enough that the average person is going to go through the trouble of pausing, rewinding and advancing every frame to catch that. That's not in defense of using AI algorithms to upscale and "clean up" your movies. That's just a fact of being a viewer. I'd say something like TRUE LIES is a different story because, even in motion, the DNR and sharpening is off-putting. I don't think that's the case here with TERMINATOR. At the end of the day, the 2013 remaster still exists.
The people who are saying ai hack jobs are using fan upscales in a lot of ways from a blu-ray release and because people believe it was from the 4k some are from the 4k but trying to figure out what is what is hard and there trashing them because of ai when they also go in and edit the movie along side the ai to fix a lot of issues as well
I'm not sure I follow all of this, but fans act like getting a new 4K transfer is like being given a riddle to solve, not a fun movie to watch. Nobody needs to be going so deep on these. Nobody.
@CerealAtMidnight there are trolls out there who are using fan upscales using the blu-ray source and those are getting mixed in with the 4k source that people are showing off and it's hard to know the differences without watching it
bottom line, reddit reviews are trash. Stick to people you know you can trust, i.e. people who do this professionally, not "blufan97" for disc reviews. There's too much misinformation out there.
Perhaps (and hopefully) we are now entering an era when movies like Blazing Saddles can be made once again, equal opportunity offenders. If Hollywood isn't willing to come along for the ride, they will continue to suffer. No more checking boxes. Just pure and free creativity and let the market decide. Comedians rejoice! Well, you now all know for whom I voted. 😀
Heath, Ive noticed people who watch movies with a microscope or a magnifier not even following the plot or appreciating the movie but just to find image mistakes, they don't love movies like you and we do. Ask them for an opinion about the movie itself and will give you the most superficial and predictable comments
I agree with your point of view of the frame by frame viewing of the films. I don’t think most of the criticism people have is warranted. I do have some issues with the use and reliance of AI for upscaling as it does move from best version ever to modifying films. The only good news is that it should be minor.
I haven't seen "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" yet. I'm not a huge Hitchcock fan but "North by Northwest" is one of his top tier works, IMO. I'd put it up there with "Rear Window" and maybe "Rope." I appreciate the transgressiveness of "Blazing Saddles" but I'm actually not a fan of the movie. Mel Brooks is usually just a little too... silly & unfocused for me. Most of his comedies are just using the setting as a backdrop for various schtick. I prefer the ones where the plot is a little more integral, like "The Producers" or "To Be or Not to Be." "The Terminator" is one of my all-time favorites. It's just subtle enough that it feels like this could all really be happening. Schwarzenegger feels like a genuine machine and I love the wild-eyed madness of Michael Biehn. I don't have a 4K player or a TV large enough to spot any artifacting or anything like that. But I could tell that the previous blu-ray of "The Terminator" does employ some revisionist color grading. There's a definite teal push, which is especially evident when you look at the flourescent lights and wood veneers in the police station. I don't mind it. It fits with the overall color palette of the film and seems to have been done quite purposefully. I've seen far more careless examples of this where objects that aren't supposed to be blue definitely look kinda blue. (Look at the Genesis cave in the 2009 blu-ray of "Star Trek II." The plants don't have the kind of vibrant green that they had in the old 2000 DVD.)
It's like you said, you have these entitled spoiled rich people with their 100 inch TV's, their UHD/OLED 4K players, who probably hate movies and only watch them to point out the slightest imperfections and turns it into a major crisis on social media. Ignore these people, they are trying to ruin our happiness and enjoyment. Most of us can only afford a 40 inch TV with a blu-ray player and see no value in 4K/UHD resolution. We still buy basic DVD's because for some movies, they are only available on DVD.
I understand where you're coming from because I'm not a rich, spoiled person but I made a big purchase for a 65" OLED TV (not a giant 100") a couple years ago because I enjoy watching movies. I mainly watch movies ripped from my computer, but I also have one 4k player in the living room to watch 4k discs with DolbyVision. Bought the 4k player about a year ago. If you don't have the money to upgrade yet, try not to have FOMO. I would recommend to get bluray over DVD when they're available, though. Compared to 4k UHD bluray, standard bluray is inexpensive. I will say for me, that watching 4k movies on the OLED is an immersive experience. I just wish there wasn't so much negativity about it. Don't worry about 4k until you buy a better TV. If that day never comes, just stick with Bluray.
@@frommatorav1 I'm old fashioned. I still enjoy watching movies on VHS and my VCR/DVD combo player still works. I dno't follow any cliques or the in-crowd. As long as I still have the ability to turn on a VHS tape, I say keep watching movies on tape while I still can. There's something very nostalgic and down home about the fuzzy pure color picture of watching a movie on film. It's a lost hobby. There is no counting screen pixels with VHS tapes, that's a pure color image sort of like a printed photograph in motion. It's the last chance we as a film culture will ever get to experience movies on real actual moving film. And there still are movies that only exist on VHS and I have some of them.

That's the right way. A dirty 35mm with imperfections, in a theater, with an audience will always be preferable to any home media.

I saw Blazing Saddles at my local cinema as a teenager in the 1970s. I must admit I never understood the American slang words because I am an Aussie.
Not another disc presentation video.
Good stuff man!
Im buying ultimate collectors edition from England for saddlers and northwest
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice steelbook includes a blu-ray... strange the amaray copy wouldn't for a new movie... catalogs titles, i get
I don't understand any of this. My dvd of blazing saddles is fine. I never watched the terminator to read the signs. I don't understand these things.
The movie looks great. Can’t trust most people on UA-cam.
Indeed, you really cannot. Controversy creates clicks, clicks create cash, and people would rather believe the angry guy almost every single time.
Yeah, but i shoot with this hand
Ahhh, digital can be out of focus and digital files can corrupt, so your comparison of digital to photochemical film is really, really bad,.
I'd put it up there with "Rear Window" and maybe "Rope."
I appreciate the transgressiveness of "Blazing Saddles" but I'm actually not a fan of the movie. Mel Brooks is usually just a little too... silly & unfocused for me. Most of his comedies are just using the setting as a backdrop for various schtick. I prefer the ones where the plot is a little more integral, like "The Producers" or "To Be or Not to Be."
"The Terminator" is one of my all-time favorites.
(Look at the Genesis cave in the 2009 blu-ray of "Star Trek II." The plants don't have the kind of vibrant green that they had in the old 2000 DVD.)
mmmmmm.
Cant wait to see them all
