  • It is a common problem for the Mitsubishi Pajero (in this case Series 4, or Gen 4) to have a flashing light on the dash. Sometimes it is the centre diff light that flashes although in this case it is the Front wheel lights that are blinking. I will show you the quickest method for troubleshooting the problem and what to check, in order.
Essentially, when you have the car in 2H (2 high), which for most people is the normal driving position selection, only the rear wheels should light up solid. When the Transmission ECU detects a problem with the system it will cause a light or some lights to flash on the dash.
To start with, you need to move between 2H and 4H and check that the front freewheel diff actuator is moving. The rod should move back and forth when the car is changed between 2H and 4H. If the rod doesn't move you need to check the 2 vacuum lines connected to it are in good condition. Also, you can place your finger over the vacuum line and check that it is indeed providing suction / vacuum. If there is vacuum but the actuator isn't moving, the freewheel diff actuator could be faulty and requires replacement.
If the actuator is moving, you need to check the front diff sensor, the process of which I have shown you in this video. It requires hooking a multimeter up to the sensor, engaging the sensor (if it's still fitted to the car, you need to switch to 4H) and then check the resistance is 4 to 5 ohms. If it jumps around or is outside this range, the sensor requires replacement.
After this, the front diff solenoids need checking. They are located behind the headlight of the driver side (Australia). I have shown in the video how to check these solenoids are working. They are the cause of a majority of the front flashing wheel lights on the dash because they fail regularly mainly due to under bonnet heat.
Lastly it is important to check all vacuum lines. They should be in good order, without cracks and holes etc. And for vehicles that are older, the vacuum pump itself could be the cause of the problem. If not enough vacuum is being applied to the Super select 2 4wd system, then parts of the system might not work correctly and the flashing dash light will appear.
