The Wave Gate- Building Process

- A focus on one of the more complicated gates among the Prowell Woodworks repertoire. The Wave Gate was designed to match an architectural landmark in Santa Barbara, Ca. Build of Western Red Cedar, Wenge as well as Acrylic, the building methodologies used, are the same through out all of Prowell's gate.
This gate stands 42" wide x 84" tall and took around a month to complete. Three different methods for achieving the curves were used in this design. The three major intersecting pieces were bent lamination, the upper wave section was create through segmented glue-ups, while the smaller sections were cut from a single piece.
The top section was backed with an opaque plexiglass. This gives a small amount of privacy to the neighbors that share the semi private walkway to the ocean. It also supplies a unique backlight to the setting sun
Another fun aspect of this gate is the added acrylic rod. When heated the acrylic softens, allowing you to manipulate its shape. As the sun sets, it hits the plastic, glowing through.

Absolutely stunning
Amazing craftsmanship and design, thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Would love to see more of your gates!
Me too! I hopefully be doing some more in the near future.
Fabulous. Best video yet.
i simply can't imagine the cost of this spectacular gate, the cost of a small house
love this door. wondering if it would all crack and split in a place where the winter months hit -30 ?
Would a resin or something prevent it from splitting?
-30? I think the more important question is what are you doing in -30? I have never put a gate in suck harsh conditions before, but I'm sure the Western Red Cedar would be more than suitable. You would definitely have to pay attention to your design. Keep the part widths to a minimum, as they will move less. Something with an open grid would probably do best, as the parts are narrow and the abundance of joinery would keep true the longest. Where do you live, where is reaches -30?
Ben Prowell I am in Quebec, Canada so here the weather can go from a plus 30 celcius to -30 celcius. Will try this type of door within the next months. The red bars are made of what type of material?
Does anybody know the name of the jam he's playing?
Great craftsmanship, thank you for sharing.
my520graj Absolutely! Thanks for watching.
