    Never thought much of these cars as i never figured I'd ever get near one. Had the chance to work on a couple mid '70's silver shadow models and kind of really fell in love with them. They're seriously well thought out, the way the window motors work, all the latching, brake system, chassis, all very serviceable and made to last, built from a different mindset. I'm a mechanic on mostly motorcycles, but when i work on cars I've usually worked with exotics and european cars. I would really love to have one someday, just for the smell of the interior and having fun just taking care of it. If you can't work on your own cars, and even for a lot of shops that work on everyday cars, these are not for you!
    After working on newer audi owned bentleys, I was totally unimpressed, they're just crap, Lexus is a far better choice..The new Rolls one customer owned was almost completely unserviceable, you had to take it to a dealer just to get warning lights turned off for needing the oil topped up. And they're just like everything else now..the old ones were so much different.

      Agree with you except well thought out. 🥴 the brakes on these is a f'ing joke, and the wiper motor placement makes me want to smack the whiskers off the British chap who thought it was a good place for it.

    • @Oldbmwr100rs
      @Oldbmwr100rs 2 роки тому +1

      @@LynxStarAuto I went through the craziness of a full brake flush on one, being as i've done tons of hydraulic and brake work over the years, like any different system it just took patience and good instructions. As for the wiper motor, I didn't mess with that, but have done some really pain in the ass wiper systems when i was working in car restoration, what GM was thinking with all the cable routing, or ford with 40's lincolns with the chain drive wipers, jesus..Seems wiper systems are considered an after thought on cars.

      No, sho in fact does not have wings. I spent 15 years working for a private collector that had nothing but Red Badged Rolls Royce. And, from the RR website:
      An icon is born
      In 1909, Eleanor Thornton’s presence was crystallised in the form of an ornamental figurine, by the artist Charles Sykes. A figurine that, to this day, is an exclusive addition to every Rolls-Royce motor car, to encapsulate the pursuit of personal liberty, and freedom from conformity. Challenging the social conventions of the time, her appearance became instantly iconic. Known from then on as the Spirit of Ecstasy, she leans forth towards the wind, arms outstretched, her dress billowing as if in flight. A symbol of dreams - of energy, grace and beauty - the Spirit of Ecstasy embodies the heights pursued by a unique and progressive group of friends. And it remains a tribute to their vision and everything their timeless legacy stands for.

    I should add that while all that padding under the bonnet does cut down on engine noise, the primary purpose was to protect the paint from the heat of the engine. Without the padding (insulation) the engine heat would be enough to cause the paint to peel.

    I've been wanting a Rolls from this era ever since a local used car dealer had one about 5 years ago. The guy was buddies with my grandfather and he let me drive it. It was an 85 Silver Spirit. It was two tone blue/silver with blue leather with silver piping. The car was immaculate and had about 80k on it. I believe it sold for around $10,000. Regardless of maintenance cost if one ever pops up for sale and I actually happen to be in the financial postion to buy it I probably will. Then again I also want a 60's-70's Cadillac, another 2003+ Town Car, and too many other cars to list.

    It is possible to have a lot of tranny trouble, if you get a cheap tranny to begin with. Most dealerships will not warranty them, especially if they are hourly or just. Straight off the street! Excellent observation. As one owner told me "You may be purchasing a 20-thousand dollar car, but you will be maintaining a 120-thousand dollar car! The value of the car may have dropped over the years, but the parts have done just the opposite!" I had an 88 Spur and in the 5 years I owned it I easily spent as much on maintenance as I did to acquire the car! Much of that cost involved improvements I made that were not really necessary, such as removing the quad lights and installing Euro lights, but there were things like repairing window motors that were too slow that had to be done.
