I recently started to listen to her again after over a decade or so, I hate when people say she writes depressing songs and to be all happy and whatever, she is an artist a true one, her work is her life and its really helped me through a lot of moments even on a regular day her voice, words, and music soothes my spirit. So is wonderful
This explains so much about her writing style, particularly her latest album (Queens of the Summer Hotel) - the catchier the tune, the darker the lyrics!
About 30 years ago, I attended an Aimee Mann concert in San Diego even though I was suffering from a raging case of the flu. She was that important to me. Still is.
I was about 14 when this song was on the radio. I loved it. I thought it was a new Paul McCartney song when I first heard it. I never really paid much attention to the lyrics until I took up piano 8 yrs ago. Oh this is a good piano song to learn. Bang away on the verses. A beautiful Bridge. So I find the chords on the internet (probably) guitar chords with lyrics underneath. I'm like, holy sh!t, this guy wants to jump off a church tower in the first verse!!
Great description of that song Aimee! She just got me to revisit that song. I never paid attention to that song lyrically(I'm embarrassed because I tend to really LISTEN to lyrics)....but then again I was only 4 when that sang came out haha!
G O'S is such a fabulous songwriter so much more than this song Nothing Rhymed is brilliant too. He's touring the U.S right now. Love Aimee Mann even more now if it's possible
"Volunteers of America" by The Both (Aimee Mann and Ted Leo) is this dialed up to 11: a suicidally depressed first responder feeling abandoned by his society, seeking solace in his Catholicism but failing to find it, in a catchy, upbeat pop song.
voices carry is obviously great........more of a comment on MTV video.....pop songs are what you want them...........still ....love in a vacuum .....1st listen...
"There's an aspect to the ostensibly jaunty, cheerful piece of music that then suddenly starts to turn melancholy but w/ a much heavier lyric on top." If "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" were a song.
Very nice nostalgic recollection, but come on. Why did Bullseye think that we wouldn’t notice the deletion of that long monologue where Ms. Mann, gushes, for hours, about how “The Night Chicago Died” had forever transformed her as a human being?
Ghost Town is the Song that stands out with That's just what you R and I am impressed that aside from saying she would have been a therapist if not a singer songwriter that she is also a client 😎 Mental Illness came out 24hrs near my b-day and Ouija board commentary with her revelations about trauma and healing process reinforcement good ears gift fan since I was 19 now 58 glad to have mental health proffessional in accidental or maybe intended way cool podcast Gilbert O'SULLIVAN mdd maybe😅
Let the music play by Barry White is one of those songs with a happy beat but sad story under it. His heart is broken afte a break up, but the sad lyrics and the upbeat song don't match.
It's an Irish thing! If you can't sing and dance your way through the shyte of life, your not really Irish! When in Irishman talks of suicide, it's ok. He's just sober! A few pints and a wee bit o' whisky and he'll think differently right away! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 T'were it not for the Irish, America wouldn't have Country music! Songs about a series of miserable events, drinking and suicide or fighting! ☘️🍺🥃🤣
I REMEMBER READING AND IT FITS...i DISLIKED VOICES CARRY... IT SEEMED ABOUT TWO WOMEN AND I THINHK IT WAS CHANGED FOR POP CONSUMPTION...BUT ADORED "LOVE IN A VACUUM "ON WBCN ... You are right! Voices Carry WAS originally written about a woman Aimee was once in a relationship with. I stumbled onto a YT video of her singing the original version
Aimee’s got some problems. I like her in Til Tuesday but she seems to be picking at the same scabs. Everyone has got problems and some tough things to get over Aimee. Your gift might be overcoming them…..not dwelling on them.
I was fortunate enough to see her latest show in Cincinnati. Aimee is incredible.
I was there too. What a great show in a very neat venue.
Aimee Mann is the most important artist working in music today! Period!
She'll always hold a place in my heart. Her lyrics and voice caressed my fragile youth. Thank God we shared a generation.

All the songs are beautiful and you did that!❤
That makes so much sense!! I can definitely hear those influences in her music.
Thanks for posting that. I've been following Aimee Mann since 1993.
Amazing song, and I agree.
Loved this so much. Aimee has always been such a fascinating character to me. ❤
Marvelous analysis of a great song 🎶

There are so many good artists today. Not on the radio so much, but writing some great songs.

Very interesting. Thank you.
Nice job.
This is great analysis. She should teach a course on pop music lyrics.

The song that changed her life is "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan.

sorry "Stupid Thing" is her best ever!
Sounds a little like McCartney circa '75-'76.
Voice s carry
