I have an aluminum deep-v (Lund 2075 Pro-V specifically) & almost always launch solo without docks...and without sand. Can't tie to the eye because the eye is not reachable from inside the boat. As an alternative, use 2 lines, tie them to the front cleats & keep the rope about an even length. it's safer by using the cleats because I'm not leaning way over the bow to try & untie any ropes- that's not safe!! That lets the boat float off the trailer & stay straight. 1 line to 1 cleat twists the boat. I also tie it to the trailer around the winch instead of the truck. Without sand, you can't float it all the way off the trailer like the video shows. It has to float off, then you walk down the trailer to retrieve it (I'm also using a bunk trailer). Board the boat, untie the cleats, throw the tag end of the rope into the bed and move the boat to where it's safe to tie to a tree or whatever else is around. Often I have to drop an anchor off the transom to keep it from turning sideways when there is a cross wind. I launch my boat similar to the way you do but I attach one end of the line to a boat cleat and then I have a brass shackle attached to the other end which I attach to a D ring on the bed of my pickup truck after lowering the tail gate. That way there isn't any tying/untying.
You still used the dock. I assume if it’s a no dock launch into a sandy bottom your just launching from shore on beach without a launch ramp. Your right the best thing is to not launch alone and have another competent boat or truck drivers to help out. Even someone doing nothing on the dock could lend a hand. Also if your a solo launcher please walk or drive your boat to the end of the dock so you don’t block the next boat from launching while you park your vehicle. Nice video.
Thanks for the vid. Half hitches though? A bowline is simple to tie and never gets too tight to untie. This vid helped me out though I appreciate you taking the time to show it.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS oooh, I see what you mean now. Mine doesnt have rollers but the boards the boat sits on are hinged so they can angle up for easier loading.
Technically it’s on the truck side and I’m sure it would be fine, but you want to avoid carabiners on the boat and in most marine situations. The ability to untie or let a knot slip in an urgent situation is important on and around a boat. (A limb gets tangled in a tightening line or tide drop etc.) Although you can untie a carabiner, a less experienced person in a panic would probably try to unclip it which may be impossible with heavy pressure. With that being said, this is a different situation and would probably be fine most days.
I have seen boats at our ramp slide off the trailer with the winch unhooked while backing down, even with bunk trailers. Maybe better to at least leave the chain attached just to make sure. Maybe our ramps are a little steeper than yours. Just my opinion. Better safe than sorry
Sure. I definitely recommend leaving it attached as well. My situation is very unique. I’m on the water with this boat over 300 days a year, sometimes launching more than once a day. I fish from Georgia to Gloucester, fresh and salt. I’ve seen every type of ramp there is. I couldn’t get this boat to slide even though I have tried to do so many times. If the bunk trailer is set up correctly it should be nearly impossible to slide the boat off when traveling less than 20 mph. B

Ihave a question. I dont have a ramp or concrete launching area. I have a yard and then the lake shoreline. Do I just back trailer to the edge of grass? and will it get stuck since the surface isn't solid?
Cowboys There is a very good chance you will get stuck. Even if you are able to launch you will most likely get stuck trying to pull the boat out at the end of your trip.
Good eye! On shallow ramps like this the roller hits the fin on the trolling motor when the boat doesn’t float up enough. It’s just the plastic side piece.
If you can't tie knots, tie lots 😂 That will never work on my trailer, it has rollers. If I undo the safety chain at the top of the ramp, my boat will end up on the concrete!
Nice video we've been doing that for years at least since the 70s. It's a great way to launch a boat and not get wet but you might want to try to tie a bowline.
I can probably do a knots video, but if I did it here everyone would click off and stop watching, and to be honest a “first attempt Bowline” might send your boat floating away. Everyone can do a few half hitches. Thanks for the comment.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I understand laugh out loud. When I was in Sea school getting my captain's license I went and bought a 4-foot piece of rope and used a cheap wooden bar stool from Walmart or wherever and practice my Bolens it took me about an hour, but I practice when I asked the spare time for about a month. haven't had one in months..lol
Tom Alderman It would work, but I would only do that when you DEFINITELY have a sandy landing for the boat since you will be using your truck to pull the boat in. If it’s a hard ramp I pull the last few feet by hand so I’m gentle. A 10’ rope tied to the back of the trailer will be hard to get your hands on in that case.
Hi There! Is there a step ladder on the market or something that would make it the climbing on-board easier from a boat ramp without a dock? I find it hard to get in and off safely and also hard for pushing off...
Yes. There is a ladder system that bolts to the front of your trailer. It’s pretty impressive. Some are bigger than others. This is a smaller one. www.overtons.com/quality-mark-bowstep-4-step-ladder-starboard-with-right-handle-324417.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxeed1Jn56gIV9f3jBx37YgEfEAQYASABEgJcZPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Mike Smedley yeah that’s from the trailer, I’m talking about when the truck is parked and the boat is in the water with the helper... I’m that helper lol short legs, high boat... lol I dunno something that could fold I guess
Gotcha. These ladders may look overly simple, but they work ok for most boats. You would need a longer one like this, but it may not fold. They definitely make folding versions. Get at least 4 rungs so the legs will reach the bank and not just hang there. www.overtons.com/overtons-removable-telescoping-pontoon-boat-ladder-4-step-321155.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvpD_iJv56gIVlv_jBx1mBADEEAQYFCABEgKhrfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Keel damage seems like a risk. One boat wake and your hull could be on the concrete. Why not use your remote controlled trolling motor? Lower it once the boat floats. Park your truck, then just troll the boat to shore with the remote.
Brian Becker Fair points, this video is more for the masses that struggle when launching alone. Probably less than 5% of boats have a self deploying trolling motor. There shouldn’t be boat wakes by most ramps in no wake zones and if there are big waves your out of luck, try a different ramp. Like I said in this video, launching alone isn’t the best idea. It certainly isn’t perfect.
I believe people need to understand the importance of being prepared before they are reversing down the ramp. This is not the time to make sure your plugs are in, winch hook released, has enough 2cycle oil, etc. This is the time to get in and get out.
Talking shallow ranks, my community has all tow vehicles with the rear (axle) in the water just to launch even 22, 24 ft vessels. Some days, with low tide, mufflers blowing water. Terrible situation, ya.
I have bunk trailer for 24' boat (cat hull so it stays centered and wont float sideways off trailer). I leave wench connected, back up till it floats. Walk up the trailer steps at front of trailer, Turn on blower, Lower out drive, then start the engine. Walk to front and unlatch wench. Back along dock far enough to be out of the way of next launcher. Tie off and walk to truck for parking. 90 secs max before I am moving truck off ramp. OH SHIT, I Forgot the plugs....oh well, I have 3 auto bilge pumps and now I know they all still work. :)
Yeah it is tricky especially if the wind is blowing, current of the water. My cousin has a deck boat and had a heck of a time one time loading up because of strong winds at a lake.
After watching this search for boat dragged up launch. So many people that do this drag the boat up the ramp. I launched and loaded my cabin cruiser alone a hundred times. and now a 19' bass boat. Get in and drive it off then drive it back on. Learn how so other boaters don't wait forever.
I hear ya, but Some older lone boaters can’t make that climb over the winch and /or spare tire onto the bow, especially in winter clothing in freezing temps like most Striper fishermen. For every video showing a boat dragged up the ramp by the bowline I’m willing to bet there are 100 videos of guys slipping off the bow into the water. Maybe more.
Need to be careful launching on a shallow launch like that, in regards to your trolling motor. Won't be too long before it gets ripped off after a couple more launches like that.
Yeah man. It’s been a pain on all ramps actually. I have to stay in the boat and throttle up to keep the boat pinned to the front roller as my buddy backs down the truck. I keep it pinned until the boat floats up away from that roller. MotorGuide trolling motors curl down over the edge🥴🥴.

Cowboys There is a very good chance you will get stuck. Even if you are able to launch you will most likely get stuck trying to pull the boat out at the end of your trip.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS do you have any suggestions for launching? Also, Should I tie to a tree and leave in water?
How big is the boat? Is this a pond or a big lake?

Love it! Very helpful thank you!
Thanks Tom!! I appreciate that brother!
Thanks buddy. Good stuff!
Pretty sure you broke the trolling motor mount on that launch.
Good eye! On shallow ramps like this the roller hits the fin on the trolling motor when the boat doesn’t float up enough. It’s just the plastic side piece.
'
the motor vehicle must use a shift '' N '' as neutral with a trailer boat while slow down ramp to the water...
dont use a shift '' R '' as reverse
how about some videos for loading by yourself, you know the hard part
Not to be funny but it’s the exact opposite.
Doesn't the electronics on the hanger getting destroyed by the salt water?
Nope. All sealed. 👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS How? Do you take it off?
Maybe I’m not understanding you. What do you mean by hanger.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS The thing you have the boat on. Maybe hanger is the wrong word
Ok. That’s what I thought you meant. Trailer is the word. It’s made of I beam aluminum and the wiring and lights are all way. Thanks!
Great idea...thank you
Nice job
What kind of boat is that
You don’t trust the ulterra?
I learned all the ways that can go wrong
It’s a Motor Guide.
Good job love
I tie onto the trailer rather than the bumper
👍👍👍
I missed the NO Dock NO CLIMBING!! Where are those videos?
😁
If you can't tie knots, tie lots 😂 That will never work on my trailer, it has rollers. If I undo the safety chain at the top of the ramp, my boat will end up on the concrete!
Bet that works awesome in the wind
Joey’s I forgot to mention I’m using that new wind proof rope. I also throw it in 4 wheel drive to keep the gail from dragging me out to sea.
Mike Smedley you’d definitely need all of that with that dodge
I love your logo. I’ll not lie I’ve searched many times but can’t find it.
I’m on the other side of the pond.
Stay safe
Email me your address and I’ll send you a few decals. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com
Nice video we've been doing that for years at least since the 70s. It's a great way to launch a boat and not get wet but you might want to try to tie a bowline.
Thanks!!, in a basic video like this I keep everything very simple. 99 out of 100 that watch this won’t know a bowline.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS that's cool man I understand. Why don't you teach them? I'm sure they will greatly appreciate it.
Excellent presentation. Thank you very much!
Thanks!!!
Thank you for this great info. 😊
Thanks brother!
Good idea. But when it’s windy.... tougher to do this
Mike. Thanks for your reply about guiding in NC. Do you know of a good one?
Would a rope around 10’ long tied to the back of the trailer work ?
Tom Alderman It would work, but I would only do that when you DEFINITELY have a sandy landing for the boat since you will be using your truck to pull the boat in. If it’s a hard ramp I pull the last few feet by hand so I’m gentle. A 10’ rope tied to the back of the trailer will be hard to get your hands on in that case.
Mike Smedley Thanks Mike
Hi There!
Is there a step ladder on the market or something that would make it the climbing on-board easier from a boat ramp without a dock? I find it hard to get in and off safely and also hard for pushing off...
Yes. There is a ladder system that bolts to the front of your trailer. It’s pretty impressive. Some are bigger than others. This is a smaller one. www.overtons.com/quality-mark-bowstep-4-step-ladder-starboard-with-right-handle-324417.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxeed1Jn56gIV9f3jBx37YgEfEAQYASABEgJcZPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Mike Smedley yeah that’s from the trailer, I’m talking about when the truck is parked and the boat is in the water with the helper... I’m that helper lol short legs, high boat... lol I dunno something that could fold I guess
Gotcha. These ladders may look overly simple, but they work ok for most boats. You would need a longer one like this, but it may not fold. They definitely make folding versions. Get at least 4 rungs so the legs will reach the bank and not just hang there. www.overtons.com/overtons-removable-telescoping-pontoon-boat-ladder-4-step-321155.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvpD_iJv56gIVlv_jBx1mBADEEAQYFCABEgKhrfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Mike Smedley thanks, your link had a secondary suggestion and BINGO I found it, it’s called a Gunwale Hook Ladder... thanks for the help Mike
👍👍cool!!
U didnt mention about plugging up the back
Keel damage seems like a risk.
Brian Becker . Just like the commercial. I don’t know if I’d trust those remotes. My luck big gust of wind comes up a takes it down the lake.lol
Well done - good suggestions.
Thanks brother!
I believe people need to understand the importance of being prepared before they are reversing down the ramp. This is not the time to make sure your plugs are in, winch hook released, has enough 2cycle oil, etc. This is the time to get in and get out.
How would you load up with no dock?
Here ya go.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Looks like the same video.
Sweet truck!
Really helpful video and description, thanks!
Where is this filmed, looks awesome?
Thanks brother! Lake Gaston Virginia.
Need me a keel guard now
Yep. Launching alone has its compromises.
Good job cap
Jose A C thanks Brother.
Talking shallow ranks, my community has all tow vehicles with the rear (axle) in the water just to launch even 22, 24 ft vessels. Some days, with low tide, mufflers blowing water. Terrible situation, ya.
I hear ya brother. Some ramps I use require all 4 truck wheels in the water, for quite a distance too.
Ha!! Cats are definitely sweet for the trailer ladders!!! 👍👍
launching is easy loading is another story
Yeah it is tricky especially if the wind is blowing, current of the water. My cousin has a deck boat and had a heck of a time one time loading up because of strong winds at a lake.
That’s why they say all divorces start on boat ramps.
Maybe more.
Nice video!
Thanks brother!
Great video
Thanks brother
Great video!
Why not tie a bowline?
You can if you want, but for simplicity’s sake -Everyone knows half hitch.
Are you prior service or L.E.O .?
No sir.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS .you def have the look ..thanx ..be safe bro

Awesome video dad!
Thank you sweetheart. 😁
The basic stuff new boaters need to see!!! Love the info on all ur videos brother.. I have a roller trailer looking for a bunk trailer for a 19ft keys west center console Lmk if u know of someone mike. Appreciate it..
Gary T Thanks brother!!! I’ll keep any eye out. Have you tried Facebook? I see guys selling stuff like that a lot.
nice boat you got there...but that launch scared me lolz
Thanks brother
Good way to fuck up your gel coat even if it's sand
Stop. A boat is only a tool brother. I beach my boats all the time. They are made to handle it. How do you launch with no dock?
