I love the Degrassi drug episodes because they really downplay the effects of hard drug addictions and overplayed the harm of smoking weed. Like in Degrassi universe you can walk in and out of a meth/coke/ecstasy addiction in a matter of days but if you dared to smoke week that's where you could really ruin your life kid
What really got me was the episodes where Spinner was buying cannabis for the effects from chemo and they managed to demonize weed SO HARD for a CANCER patient. But yeah, it's super easy to put down a coke or a drinking habit. I was kinda happy to see how their depiction of how some drugs may not interact well with certain conditions/medications a la Eli.

This is very much what doing meth is like, but it's almost impossible to stop rather than your mom being like "you better not meth or else rehab" and you're cured. I've spent nearly a decade of my life in institutions, and been endlessly traumatized, because of meth, and I still have difficulty not using it. I recently had a brief relapse which lasted just shy of a month, after more than four years of sobriety, and am back to sobriety for the last few months. I hate meth so much, but I'll be damned if I don't still love it

your reenactment was 10/10 💀i remember distinctly how confused i was over the whole peter using m3th episodes. it all happened so quickly that peter wouldn't qualify to be diagnosed with a substance use disorder, and in my opinion it came across a little bit as fear mongering? the start of substance abuse and addiction can happen quickly, but it was honestly whacky to me how quick the band was just to just kick peter out and how quickly things progressed. not to say that his actions were okay, he wasn't struggling, or that it's impossible for someone to react the way peter did to a substance, of course. it just didn't seem very realistic (though i could be wrong as i've never been addicted to stimulants, most of my knowledge is from MH-related education), and i feel like it could have been handled a lot better. like you mentioned, the consquecenes of his actions could have been a bit more impactful. plus, i think if they had spread this whole plot out so we could have seen the effects of substance use had on peter and his friends/family in the long run it would have been a lot more impactful as a plot instead of just feeling like a random "don't use substances kids!!" moment. maybe i'm overthinking it, though thanks for the great video!! loved this one and the degrassi takes manhattan one, as well :)) i was looking through the comments, and saw you haven't watched og degrassi. i'd love to hear your thoughts on it! as someone who first watched tng it was super cool to learn more about spike, snake, joey, and some of the other og characters who made appearances in tng! i'd really recommend giving it a try, if you have the time :)

Honestly I am 100% convinced they only created the Peter character because they couldn't make that Chester character work. Because aren't they the exact same character when they're introduced? A sleazy "bad boy" who treats women like crap and yet every single girl in the school weep when he acknowledges them in the street? Honestly convinced one of three things happened: they wanted to keep Chester as a character, but the actor dropped out; they realized he wasn't a good actor so they dropped him and rewrote the character; or (the most malicious one and again this is just speculation) they needed a future main cis white hetero dude to be the star of the show and decided this was the way to go because reasons? Idk but any of those seem like plausible reasons.
The problem with degrassi (along with many) is that they didn’t know how to how to develop villains. They didn’t know how to redeem Jay so they paired him with manny and oddly enough it worked, they tried to do it again when they Owen and Tristan brothers but we know how that went

JT's grandmother raises him on her own due to his father running off, his cousin gave him an ecstasy tablet when he was in the 7th grade, he was threatened to be kicked out of school in one episode, he sells drugs to support his pregnant girlfriend, he has a predisposition for attention seeking, and the list goes on. With that being said, it makes me wonder if Peter's meth binge was originally a scrapped JT storyline.
Personally, looking back on the show, I think this season was the beginning of the end of the show for me. When this season came out, I was a freshman in college. It really started losing the appeal. I know I watched every episode, but this is when the show started to feel less relatable and more dramatic.
I thought Degrassi was just something people made fun of lol. Id love to see an accurate highschool show for teens. Its really boring and most kids just go home to play video games or watch TV after a long day of really boring classes.
