Funniest thing i've ever seen here in The Netherlands being transported on a bike was a woman who had every bag on her bike stuffed with plants. Really big plant in her front basket. Plants on the handle bars. Plants everywhere. You couldn't see the woman riding the bike, you couldn't see the bike at all. It was like a moving bush. HAHA

Great video ! I'm a Dutchman living in the US and I refuse to give up my bike. It takes me where ever I need to go much quicker than by car. So that includes going to the gym ( great pre-workout) and yes, doing my shopping. At Trader Joe's Im already known as the cycling Dutch man :p I do wish the infrastructure was more adjusted to riding bikes, miss my dutch bikelanes.

Here in Czech Republic (I live in small city with 2000 people) people going with trash by car and I carrying 6x2L PET on my bike :-D If I meet someone who I know with car on street he always asking why I still don't have car. It's because car costs 2000 eur for year only for car insurance and reapairs, I don't want be slave of same stupid car ;-) I have shop 2 km from my home, it's really stupid paying car and making car licence because of 2 kilometers. And if I am in my home city Prague, car would only obstructs there, I can travel in city by my legs faster then people in cars. And if I need move some big things, I just pay someone, it's still cheaper than having own car.
I live in Omaha, Ne and have similar experiences. I ride a traditional dutch bike with a front wooden crate and rear saddlebags. The looks I get when riding. I even have a nice large trailer I can hook up for extra large shopping runs / home improvement projects.

It's so unpopular in Poland where the car culture is perhaps the strongest in Europe. Many people ask "Can't you afford a car?" when you use your bike for going to work or shopping. I don't own a car. When I tell people I don't have a car because I don't need it they ask: "How are you going to drive your child to school?" I answer: "my daughter is intelligent enough to remember her way to school". I am not against cars, I sometimes use a car (rental, taxi) but car are overused, in my opinion. Many bike paths have been built in Poland recently, more people go by bike than 10 years ago but still - it's no more than 2-3% of the population.
We always ride on bikes in Hungary especially in my village and people think you are poor if you have no car. Having a car is the most efficient way to get a girlfriend too. Such a shame. I will probably move to the netherland this month tho. Kinda scary even if i were living in 2 foreign countries in the last 4 years. . 🤪
Great UA-cam channel. I'm an American living in the Netherlands and one of my favorite things about the country is the ability to get around without a damn car. AWESOME. My mom is an avid cyclist in Mississippi. I think she'll really enjoy these video's....and be incredibly envious.
I have been driving and riding motorcycles for 28 years and I've had several sports vehicles. Since turning to the bicycle 5 years ago, I have realised that the freedom of the motorcar is little more than an illusion; a better description would be "occasional convenience". I can fit a week's shopping for our family of 4 on my bike and trailer. The only time I use a car is where the infrastructure is too dangerous or the destination is too far to take my whole family by bicycle. The people that benefit the most from our cars are the people selling them and the oil companies who are the real people running our countries. By all means use a car when necessary, but it's time we stopped fuelling our own demise (no pun intended).
Cars are useful when you need to travel long distances But the bike is more efficient in short distances, plus you get healthy and you exercise at the same time

Shopping by bicycle helps local economy instead helping big stores which owners are family of billionaires. Owners of small local stores are far more likely to be a local resident also which likely to spend their profits locally. Get rid of the parking space on the street because they don't park there to shop. Make use of that space for bicycle lane and bicycle parking.

As a dutch person I’ve carried sooo many different things on my bike. My mom moved from one apartment to another apartment once, and she moved a lot of the stuff on her bike!! The big furniture, she carried it into the subway😂😂. She had no money back then
I heard a similar story about a Green Left counselmember who moved his furniture with an old fashioned big cargobike. At least he was practicing what he preached.
Cool to see that what's normal to us is not normal for everyone. My daughter was 4 years old when she drove her bike to the shop for the first time by herself. I should do it more but i'm so lazy.
True, but.... you still need a good amount of common sense. A simple but very good example: if you can see the driver, the driver can see you. So, don't stand next to a large truck in his blind spot. A lot of deadly accidents happen like that.
We fall on our behind from time to time because of rain or snow .but never on our heads .. Car accidents to ocurr ofcourse but mosty because then on of the parties run a red light or not give right of way.
I using bikes for shopping and transportation since my chilhood (I am 26 now) and I've never need helmet. But I guess somewhere in road where cars riding fast it's better use helmet. But I know many people who falling from bike very often, so some peole really need helmet. ;-)
My back feels good already . You see most the people riding bicycles in my country have those low racing style handle bars and all hunched over . In holland its about comfort . No cyclists wearing tight racing suits . It's awesome there .
We still have quite a few of those spandex twats around and they're just as annoying and self-absorbed as anywhere else. To see them riding three wide in front of you in the middle of the road, next to a wide open beautiful segregated cycling path makes me wish we could legalise running them over and selling the spare parts of their expensive bikes.

I am still a car fan. I loved my MGB and my V65 Magna. But I have become a bike convert in recent years. I can go somewhere in 20 minutes by car, the same place one hour by bike. But... it FEELS like 15 minutes on a bike, I enjoy the scenery, and arrive smiling !
I saw a few mentions in the comments that you can fit a weeks worth of shopping on your bike (+ trailer). Worth mentioning is that our infrastructure is such that for city dwellers a lot of shops are local (in neighborhoods) instead of in a distant mall on the outskirts of town. Dutch people often visit the supermarket several times a week to get a one or a couple of days worth of shopping instead of once a week. Because the shops are close it is no bother to hop on your bike and ride a to the shop in five minutes or less. I mostly drive my car but will hop on my bike to to get some forgotten or out of stock items in the time span of 15 minutes.
I believe you have a major problem with bicycle thefts in the Netherlands too? I'm in Ireland and I just use one decent heavy U Lock in and around my local small town and rural area. But in larger urban areas unfortunately I feel the need to also carry a heavy duty gold and diamond rated chain and lock. Throughout all of Europe we need to have a mandatory registration system at point of sale for all bikes that will make them unsaleable again anywhere if stolen. This is a bee in my bonnet issue with me at this time.
@@tconnolly9820 if people didn’t buy things without a serial registry check we could eliminate theft entirely. Whenever I buy second hand equipment, I always want to see a receipt of the original purchase. It should be mandated. We could eliminate a great deal of theft overnight.
I learned to ride a bike late, so my driving skills aren't perfect yet, but I think I'll be able to watch the Dutch ride a bike and learn various techniques for using a bike! And the bag mounted on the rear rack looks very practical and unique. I'll have to buy one and install it.
Yes, installing rear panniers (bags) is a good idea. TIP: also install a folding basket up front (if your bike has a front rack, of course). Then your bike can still fit a bike rack. Mine is made by YEPP.
It is. The dutch culture is a very relaxed down to earth one. Same goes for foreigners thinking the dutch are rude/blunt....the truth is we just don't bs anyone and just say it like it is. Nor do we have a thing for cars being a status symbol....we are not that materialistic... no one cares about that.😂

@@melba10 there is not really a trend. I drive an old bike without gears which my father once won in an lottery. I use it quite a lot to transport my two kids thru my village. Whe don't feel the need to buy the newest item in general, we often use things until there broken .
@@melba10 not really. When my bike breaks down. (And it does) I use old back up bikes. Like those are really run down but noone bats an eye over it. I used to have a really cheap ugly old bike but it's just a vehicle. It gets you were you need to go. That's it.
I can speak from experience and say that shopping by bicycle is SO simple when you have the right bike. I use a heavily modified trek belleville. Just slap on a nice large pair of axiom dutch shopper panniers and a large crate on the front rack and you can carry a full weeks worth all at once. In the Netherlands I'm sure my setup would not even get noticed as it looks almost identical to many bikes shown here, but here in Omaha, Ne I get a LOT of looks (and even some stuff tossed at me :-( ).
very good. i wish more people would use bikes like this in north america, instead a big deal is made with special cycling clothes and expensive bikes and cycling gear, and people in a rush cycling like racers
There is also the attitude among many "road" and MTB biker's that nobody else is really a cyclist or counts apart from them. One UA-camr really annoyed me in saying he would have to give up road cycling and he wouldn't be able to call himself a cyclist anymore. Let's just say my p1ss was boiled at that comment. On the entire Irish Cycling Ireland website there is only one or two photos that doesn't have everyone dressed head to toe in full Lycra road warrior gear with road or MTB bike's. It's obviously plain who the organisers of this association see themselves as representing and also who they are also completely ignoring and disenfranchising. And they claim to be representing ALL cyclists. I'm planning to take my bike and trailer into town later to buy a new vacuum cleaner. But I'm apparently not a cyclist so I'm not represented.
I can believe it. When I was riding my 1977 GL 1000 motorcycle I carried everything from groceries to a few 2x4’s with long bungee cords so it can be done. Today I just brought back a single plastic chair on my adult three-wheeler with bungee cords.

I love this.. the entire city is arranged to accommodate cyclers instead of cars. Even the stairs and escalators! Imagine how different our world would be if every city was like this. And it seems that everyone in this city is beautiful! We here in canada are all fat and ugly. Lol
Those stairs with the rail and the escalators go to an underground parking facility for bicycles . In Dutch: fietsenstalling. But have you noticed the word "Gratis" next to the word Fietsenstalling at 2:21 and 2:24. Gratis means free. You can park your bike here for free and some or most of these parking facilities are guarded. The grocery store at 2:43 has a parking facility for bicycles, but none for cars.
Do note that the dutch approach with much freeway for cyclists is out of necessity. We are a very densely populated country and therefore the cities are more compact and distances short; there is little space for broad motorways and parking space. North American cities are much more spread out. To copy the dutch approach would require a completely different way of town planning, with fare more urban cores and shopping centers.
@@nlbergsma not entirely true. In the 1960s we had a lot of cars and build roads etc similar to the US. Then we complained about the amount of people dying in traffic. After which our government started making the streets safer. Part of this resulted in slower streets, which means other transportation methods are more often just as fast as the car. In some cases faster. Thus more people started using bicycles which eventually led to the safety for everyone mentality. Which gave us all the protected bicycle lanes, woonerf etc. Where cars can't go very fast and usually going to a store is faster by bicycle. Meanwhile in the US they don't really care about the traffic deaths as much and the layout of roads is more sperated between commercial and residential (increasing the distance to the stores) couple that with the generally car first mentality and terrible alternatives to a car. And you end up with a system where cars are used much more often as bicycles (or public transportation). Our mentality shifted from cars to public transport in the 70s, they didn't.

The closest thing to shopping by bike you can come to with a car has to be drivers of small sportscars like the MX5 or the Caterham 7. I, as a 1st gen MX5 owner, have in my time carried some truly ludicrous things in my car but never got the great looks of amazement I get now carrying all manner of things on my custom utility bike here in New Orleans.
I never did get the hang of mounting a bike after getting it moving with only one foot on the pedal. Always felt like I was going flip on the side. These riders made it look so simple! Though maybe its not as hard to do with an open frame model that you can step through rather than a closed frame you have to get your leg over.

The frame doesn't matter, it can be done on any bike. I never stopped to think about it, but we indeed do this all the time. Women use open frames. Most men use closed frames.
The thing that most amazes me about this video: there wasn`t even a single cargo-bike. Just your normal everyday dutchbikes/citybikes ore however you call them.
You don't need one. I use a hybrid bike. I have a selection of different sized cheap but good pannier bags and I have a large fully enclosed dog trailer for for full weekly family shopping trips or anything else too heavy or bulky for the bike alone. It's a real alternative to the car.
Sometimes I shop by bike here in the U.S. I’m the only person I know with a basket-most Americans only know baskets from girls’ bikes before 1979. No bike racks or paths, anywhere. Smirks from drivers and fellow shoppers. “Where’s your beret?”
This is another example of this guys excellent videos. I do all our shopping for the house on the bike. I can bring the bike up to the door. I may have to take two trips, but hey is that a chore. I watch the drivers trying to get parking and getting angry at the traffic. I some times have to go without the rest of the family and I be joking when I get home about having to drive round and round looking for a parking space and having to buy parking tickets and about the police moving me on and about traffic wardens issuing me with tickets etc. I get yeah yeah right dad what ever. I know what you are saying what is this muppet on. I have an acute case of cycleitis. It can be contagious. Car drivers have been know to get it well over here in rare situations from sitting too long in traffic jams and paying too much at the pumps.

@EnigmaDrath Well in most US cities, the bicycle would function the same as in the NL. It is only changing the mentality and reform the road structures inside a city. Might take some time but I see no problems, put some local politicians on a bicycle and demonstrate for more bicycle-facilities.

On the other hand, riding a mountain bike as a recreational sport is very popular in Poland, but not as a day-to-day use.
My favourite thing I seen transported was two guys on bikes and a 3 meter ladder in the middle of them.
bicycles have ben my only transportation for 50 years and I like good solid baskets I am American.
When you are born in the Netherlands you get 3 bikes as a gift from the state.

True, but.... you still need a good amount of common sense. A simple but very good example: if you can see the driver, the driver can see you. So, don't stand next to a large truck in his blind spot. A lot of deadly accidents happen like that.

We fall on our behind from time to time because of rain or snow .but never on our heads .. Car accidents to ocurr ofcourse but mosty because then on of the parties run a red light or not give right of way.

I using bikes for shopping and transportation since my chilhood (I am 26 now) and I've never need helmet. But I guess somewhere in road where cars riding fast it's better use helmet. But I know many people who falling from bike very often, so some peole really need helmet. ;-)
My back feels good already . You see most the people riding bicycles in my country have those low racing style handle bars and all hunched over . In holland its about comfort . No cyclists wearing tight racing suits . It's awesome there .
We still have quite a few of those spandex twats around and they're just as annoying and self-absorbed as anywhere else.
To see them riding three wide in front of you in the middle of the road, next to a wide open beautiful segregated cycling path makes me wish we could legalise running them over and selling the spare parts of their expensive bikes.
It's not just comfort, but also safer. You sit higher, meaning you can see over normal cars and see if there is any traffic.
As an international student, I also go to shops like this in Chicago.

I am still a car fan. I loved my MGB and my V65 Magna. But I have become a bike convert in recent years. I can go somewhere in 20 minutes by car, the same place one hour by bike. But... it FEELS like 15 minutes on a bike, I enjoy the scenery, and arrive smiling !
I saw a few mentions in the comments that you can fit a weeks worth of shopping on your bike (+ trailer). Worth mentioning is that our infrastructure is such that for city dwellers a lot of shops are local (in neighborhoods) instead of in a distant mall on the outskirts of town. Dutch people often visit the supermarket several times a week to get a one or a couple of days worth of shopping instead of once a week. Because the shops are close it is no bother to hop on your bike and ride a to the shop in five minutes or less. I mostly drive my car but will hop on my bike to to get some forgotten or out of stock items in the time span of 15 minutes.
I believe you have a major problem with bicycle thefts in the Netherlands too?
I'm in Ireland and I just use one decent heavy U Lock in and around my local small town and rural area.
But in larger urban areas unfortunately I feel the need to also carry a heavy duty gold and diamond rated chain and lock.
Throughout all of Europe we need to have a mandatory registration system at point of sale for all bikes that will make them unsaleable again anywhere if stolen.
This is a bee in my bonnet issue with me at this time.
@@tconnolly9820 if people didn’t buy things without a serial registry check we could eliminate theft entirely. Whenever I buy second hand equipment, I always want to see a receipt of the original purchase.

I learned to ride a bike late, so my driving skills aren't perfect yet, but I think I'll be able to watch the Dutch ride a bike and learn various techniques for using a bike!
And the bag mounted on the rear rack looks very practical and unique. I'll have to buy one and install it.
Yes, installing rear panniers (bags) is a good idea. TIP: also install a folding basket up front (if your bike has a front rack, of course). Then your bike can still fit a bike rack. Mine is made by YEPP.
Just to add,the road bicycle infrastructure in Niederland ist unbeatable, overall you can ride without worries.
I really enjoyed this. I love in Los Angeles and wish it was easier to bike around town.

It is. The dutch culture is a very relaxed down to earth one. Same goes for foreigners thinking the dutch are rude/blunt....the truth is we just don't bs anyone and just say it like it is. Nor do we have a thing for cars being a status symbol....we are not that materialistic... no one cares about that.😂

@@melba10 there is not really a trend. I drive an old bike without gears which my father once won in an lottery. I use it quite a lot to transport my two kids thru my village.
Whe don't feel the need to buy the newest item in general, we often use things until there broken .
@@melba10 not really. When my bike breaks down. (And it does) I use old back up bikes. Like those are really run down but noone bats an eye over it. I used to have a really cheap ugly old bike but it's just a vehicle. It gets you were you need to go. That's it.

I can speak from experience and say that shopping by bicycle is SO simple when you have the right bike. I use a heavily modified trek belleville. Just slap on a nice large pair of axiom dutch shopper panniers and a large crate on the front rack and you can carry a full weeks worth all at once. In the Netherlands I'm sure my setup would not even get noticed as it looks almost identical to many bikes shown here, but here in Omaha, Ne I get a LOT of looks (and even some stuff tossed at me :-( ).

very good. i wish more people would use bikes like this in north america, instead a big deal is made with special cycling clothes and expensive bikes and cycling gear, and people in a rush cycling like racers
If we would change clothes every time we ride a bike, we'd be changing clothes all day long, lol.
There is also the attitude among many "road" and MTB biker's that nobody else is really a cyclist or counts apart from them.
One UA-camr really annoyed me in saying he would have to give up road cycling and he wouldn't be able to call himself a cyclist anymore.
Let's just say my p1ss was boiled at that comment.
On the entire Irish Cycling Ireland website there is only one or two photos that doesn't have everyone dressed head to toe in full Lycra road warrior gear with road or MTB bike's.
It's obviously plain who the organisers of this association see themselves as representing and also who they are also completely ignoring and disenfranchising.
And they claim to be representing ALL cyclists.
I'm planning to take my bike and trailer into town later to buy a new vacuum cleaner.
But I'm apparently not a cyclist so I'm not represented.

I can believe it. When I was riding my 1977 GL 1000 motorcycle I carried everything from groceries to a few 2x4’s with long bungee cords so it can be done. Today I just brought back a single plastic chair on my adult three-wheeler with bungee cords.
Looks like me I do the same. When I moved some years ago I rented a big 'bakfiets' (carrier bike) and moved out a lot of stuff with it.

Those stairs with the rail and the escalators go to an underground parking facility for bicycles . In Dutch: fietsenstalling. But have you noticed the word "Gratis" next to the word Fietsenstalling at 2:21 and 2:24. Gratis means free. You can park your bike here for free and some or most of these parking facilities are guarded.
The grocery store at 2:43 has a parking facility for bicycles, but none for cars.
Do note that the dutch approach with much freeway for cyclists is out of necessity. We are a very densely populated country and therefore the cities are more compact and distances short; there is little space for broad motorways and parking space. North American cities are much more spread out. To copy the dutch approach would require a completely different way of town planning, with fare more urban cores and shopping centers.
@@nlbergsma not entirely true. In the 1960s we had a lot of cars and build roads etc similar to the US. Then we complained about the amount of people dying in traffic. After which our government started making the streets safer. Part of this resulted in slower streets, which means other transportation methods are more often just as fast as the car. In some cases faster. Thus more people started using bicycles which eventually led to the safety for everyone mentality. Which gave us all the protected bicycle lanes, woonerf etc. Where cars can't go very fast and usually going to a store is faster by bicycle.
Meanwhile in the US they don't really care about the traffic deaths as much and the layout of roads is more sperated between commercial and residential (increasing the distance to the stores) couple that with the generally car first mentality and terrible alternatives to a car. And you end up with a system where cars are used much more often as bicycles (or public transportation). Our mentality shifted from cars to public transport in the 70s, they didn't.

The closest thing to shopping by bike you can come to with a car has to be drivers of small sportscars like the MX5 or the Caterham 7. I, as a 1st gen MX5 owner, have in my time carried some truly ludicrous things in my car but never got the great looks of amazement I get now carrying all manner of things on my custom utility bike here in New Orleans.

For close trips i use the bike and the car for far trips or when im too lazy,lol
I never did get the hang of mounting a bike after getting it moving with only one foot on the pedal. Always felt like I was going flip on the side. These riders made it look so simple! Though maybe its not as hard to do with an open frame model that you can step through rather than a closed frame you have to get your leg over.

The trick is very good to see at 1:04 , she has the bike on her rightside and steps with her left foot on the left pedal, a little push with her right foot and there she goes.
The frame doesn't matter, it can be done on any bike. I never stopped to think about it, but we indeed do this all the time. Women use open frames. Most men use closed frames.
The thing that most amazes me about this video: there wasn`t even a single cargo-bike. Just your normal everyday dutchbikes/citybikes ore however you call them.

I use a hybrid bike.
I have a selection of different sized cheap but good pannier bags and I have a large fully enclosed dog trailer for for full weekly family shopping trips or anything else too heavy or bulky for the bike alone.
It's a real alternative to the car.

Notice how pedestrians and bike riders co-exist in harmony.
Also to shop by bike means shopping every day and not once a week like in North America.

Sometimes I shop by bike here in the U.S. I’m the only person I know with a basket-most Americans only know baskets from girls’ bikes before 1979. No bike racks or paths, anywhere. Smirks from drivers and fellow shoppers. “Where’s your beret?”

This is another example of this guys excellent videos. I do all our shopping for the house on the bike. I can bring the bike up to the door. I may have to take two trips, but hey is that a chore. I watch the drivers trying to get parking and getting angry at the traffic. I some times have to go without the rest of the family and I be joking when I get home about having to drive round and round looking for a parking space and having to buy parking tickets and about the police moving me on and about traffic wardens issuing me with tickets etc. I get yeah yeah right dad what ever. I know what you are saying what is this muppet on. I have an acute case of cycleitis. It can be contagious. Car drivers have been know to get it well over here in rare situations from sitting too long in traffic jams and paying too much at the pumps.

the culture in the US has to change concerning men and cars it seems that in the US if a man does not own a car than he is not a man or some kind of loser and of course is has to be a costly high performance model to impress the ladies and drain his financial resources that could be put to better use acquiring wealth and stability.

@EnigmaDrath Well in most US cities, the bicycle would function the same as in the NL. It is only changing the mentality and reform the road structures inside a city. Might take some time but I see no problems, put some local politicians on a bicycle and demonstrate for more bicycle-facilities.
