- A guide on how to build an insulated shed base using treated timbers and Celotex insulation.
I also used Jouplast Adjustable Decking Risers to sit the base on.
Watched loads of videos, but this 1 explains it 100% . Easy to understand. Thank you
Excellent video. You've saved me having a mental breakdown levelling my shed base. Bought 50 of those levelling pads today. Cheers.
Cheers Sam glad I could help! They are really handy.
Great video thanks. I have to lay a similar sized shed base quite soon and your video has covered pretty much everything and is nice and logical and clear to follow. Big thumbs up!
Hi i love the videos I am doing the same job next summer but it will be ( w 8ft x L 12ft x H 6ft . I am glad to see a video about this that is not filmed in the USA . Keep the videos going .
Thanks good luck with the build. 👍🏼
Hi....I'm so pleased I just found this video!! I'm about to build my own she'd very soon and this is a very helpful video 😁😁😁. so thanku very much. David. England. North Yorkshire.
Thanks David Glad I could help its comments like this that make it all worthwhile.
Amazing work explanation, not too much not too little. Great work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Super videos - explained and demonstrated very clearly. Many thanks. Love from Scotland, x.
Great stuff mate. Im dreaming of the day I can have a workshop in my back garden.
Crafty Little Maker cheers mate this was actually for my office I built in the garden I'm having to slum it in my garage for the workshop!
Love your videos as they give me great ideas for when l make my shed. I'm an electrician so the electrical side of things will be very easy.
Been looking at ways to insulate my shed, this has been a great help 👍
Thanks Andy glad you found it useful.
Well in mate, those leveling pads are a find I was having nightmares about digging, concreting and maybe laying a few bricks (bit old for all that now), nice work.
Thanks mate they saved me loads of effort. I'm not sure how well they'd cope in really uneven or wet ground but they worked well for me! Key thing is if you ensure they are all taking the weight of the frame the weight will be spread across them so shouldn't sink.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to share this. It was very useful as I'm thinking to build and insulate a base myself. I'll keep it in my favourites so I can refer back to it. Cheers.
You’re welcome.
Thanks. No problems at all the insulation doesn't absorb moisture you could leave it in a bucket of water and it wouldn't absorb any so it's perfect for the job.
Thanks for the tips, am looking to build a new shed next summer, this info will com in handy.
No problem glad you found it useful.
Building a large "She Shed" for Wife and was wondering how to insulate floor. Thanks for the ideas.
Appreciate video content! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Mahorrla Wooden Paradise Method (search on google)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for building better sheds and woodworking without the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cousin got cool success with it.
Great video, thanks for helping visualise the process :)
Excellent! I'm going to have a bag at this for my new girlie garden hut. Can you send me the link for the next part of the shed build please?
Nice job. I'll incorporate some of your ideas into my base. Thanks for the tips.
+The VerminHator you’re welcome.
Wow those levelling pads are ace! I bet you could make your own sides and roof. Perhaps that's the man cave project? 🤠😁
Thanks for the points. Greetings from Florida!
Great video. Have you had any problems with the insulation being exposed on the underside of the shed such as absorbing moisture rising up from the ground?
Really useful thanks for all the tips 👍
Very good video - thanks a lot!
Came here from Rag n bone Browns shout out. Very useful info subbed !!!
Thanks for subscribing DCPorter71 glad you found the video useful. 👍🏼
Great video, thank you.
excellent video very helpful
area40five - thanks.
Hi, very nice install, one question? Would the tape and celotex trap moisture between the bottom of flooring and this barrier? If so how would air flow through this to remove it?
Really useful as I am about to insulate my She Shed :)
Thanks glad you found it useful.
Nice job
Thank you for your help 🐱
Great video.... very informative.....but I hate to see someone doing D.I.Y using hand tools pieces of wood wearing flip flops.....no feet or toe protection
"You could use Pythagoras' Theorum if you want ... but I just kicked 'em." Priceless!
Helpful and clear. Thanks!
God, mate. Probably better than the house!
Very Practical, thanks.
Wonder if critters will eat and use the insulation for bedding. They love insulation! Maybe the foil will prevent them.
thanks m8. just what I was looking for
Glad you found it useful.
Thanks! Great vid! Very useful!
Brilliant!! Thank you.
nurserycrymesdarkart you're welcome.
Thanks for the informative video...My concern is whether the thermal barrier will trap condensation INSIDE the building if one is living in the structure,,,I have ab oak floor with no insulation but a wood stove to heat the building (a yurt) and am wondering whether insulating the floor is a good idea or not...I am not sure yet whether it is a good idea for me. But this is helpful if I do decide to insulate...any advice from other yurt dwellers will be welcome.
You may need vents to allow air flow. My door wasn’t the best dealing so air is allowed to flow! 🤣
Thank you for sharing.
Haven't you forgotten to put a proper vapour barrier down before you placed the insulation down? I'm about to do thd same job but I'll be putting down a heavy gauge plastic sheet under the floor supports then a breathable membrane before putting down the base to ensure it stays dry. Then battens in between framing to create an air gap (it doesnt hurt here to drill horizontal holes in the framing to promote air flow). Then the insulation will go down...all the gaps will be filled, joints taped and a floor laid directly on top.
Floor is raised so air flow underneath. Vapour barrier not really needed in this instance as it’s raised on plastic pads. You could put some sort of DPM under the bearers if you were worried about them getting damp. My current house was built in 1930 and has this type of construction and the joists are competent dry after 90 years!
Awesome tools!
Very useful! Im looking into a new shed for next year and insulating the floor is a must. Did you seal the end of the wood after sawing? Sorry if I missed that.
Thanks for your comments it seems to make a big difference as the shed is now very warm especially with the wall and ceiling done. I didn't seal the internal cuts but have treated and painted all the frame around the outside where it is visible. Probably should have treated everything!
Happy Wife Happy Life x
I'm currently in the process of putting 5x4 decking for the intention of putting a pool table on. Would it be wise to use the kingspan/insulation board under area pool table will be to stop damp rising or would it be best to rely on the damp proof membrane at floor level to allow for airflow?. Great vid btw.
In my opinion sealed insulation board with all joins taped will prevent rising damp but if it’s not an inside deck there’s little point in insulation and so a DPM would be best unless I’ve miss understood.
Great video. Are those adjustable wicked 'feet' suitable for a 6mx3m garden office or would you recommend something stronger? You mentioned they take a metric tonne.
beatsandwarts thanks I think as long as you have plenty of feet spread about to take the weight you should be fine. Make sure they are on solid ground or something like paving slabs so they don't sink and you'll be good.
I used similar ones for my recent build, it's 3.6 x 3.0, fully insulated and double glazed with a fair bit of weight inside. It's been up for a year (on top of an old patio) and everything's still perfectly level. I put one riser every 600mm or so, then stuck a load of old bricks and slabs underneath wherever they'd fit, just because they were lying around.
Looks great! Could you fit those adjustable feet directly to a shop bought shed floor? I have a slabbed area for the shed but would be nice to raise it off the ground slightly and get perfectly level.
Yes I think you could.
Has it held up well. Any rotting or mould ?
Great video, thanks!
I was wondering... Do you think it’s a stupid idea to cover my floor with aluminium tape? I’m retrofitting a shed you see. I know, I know, I should have done this before I moved anything in, but I didn’t. And now I have 3 heafty cabinets in there that I’m trying to avoid having to take out. But I’d like to insulate my shed. So I wondered if sealing the gaps between the wooden floorboards with the aluminium tape would do me any good? Thanks again for your videos 👍
Not much point unfortunately as it won’t form a vapour barrier.
Great video. I’m thinking of doing the same and wondered whether or not to ply line the bottom of the frame then add the Celotex to prevent any mice or such go at the insulation. Also, what’s your table saw as I’m looking into them?
Thanks
Yes you could do that to stop rodents. Not sure they will eat it though. It’s a Dewalt DW745. But noisy but great bit of kit.
you could save so much time And wood by simply using your nail gun and fixing the kingspan directly with a 90mm nail from the stud work. Easier and faster, it’s a shed floor and the kingspan is light enough, good work though but overkill for a shed floor bro. 😉
That was my thought too. Gr8 gr8 video, but the celotex support batterns seemed overkill to me too. The guy struggled to squeeze the Kingspan between beams as it is :)
Would it be quicker to cut the wood with a decent hand saw ?great video thanks
Thanks. Could do as long as you get a nice square cut.
Nice video. P. S. Came from rag n bone and subbed. Dont forget to wear a dust mask :)
Thanks for subscribing Mitesh. I usually wear one inside if cutting nasty stuff but outside I think there's little benefit.
Great video, will follow you method for fence I just ordered. Two questions : did your shed not come with a floor? How would you adjust the base design for 8x8 shed? Thanks
Sorry shed not fence....
No I didn't order it with with a floor as I wanted to build one. I'd space the floor joists at 600mm centres to make the 2.4m that is 8ft. You'll be able to get timbers pre done in 2.4m lengths so it should be easy!
Good work there! Have a sub :-)
Great job, very useful video. Any concerns about mice getting into the exposed insulation, under the build?
+Johnny Notech I haven't had any issues maybe it doesn't taste very nice!
Plus it's more the spiders I'm worried about!
Cheers
Which foam do you use? Need to complete a similar job tomorrow.
+Gary Arnold I just bought insulating expanding foam. It was from screwfix: www.screwfix.com/p/soudal-genius-insulation-foam-hand-held-750ml/25943
Footwear not the best but some good tips thank you
Thanks Kevin. They're safety flip flops. 😉
Great vid, earnt a sub from me
