James Popsys I guess, while I have you I should ask you, where you get your inspiration or what you think of to keep your mind thinking outside the box? I ask because I have been wanting to do EXACTLY what you have accomplished, even back when I was drawing, but it's difficult (coming up with something original too).
My tip: Use your lens hood. Cuts out any glare that might be getting to the lens, protects the lens, and makes you look more professional, even if just a newbie like me.
ND filters are also great for long exposure photography... ND 10 is great for bright days. You can achieve a smooth water effect that you often see in professional lake or ocean photography
after years of watching videos and working as a photographer you are a wonderful change you are not full of your self like most of the other people on youtube you don't have that oh im better than you feel there are a number of people here who forget that they were new at one point and its refreshing that your not like that
You make really good videos, they're really easy to digest. Exactly the right proportion of into/getting to the information/humour. You seem really natural in front of the camera, quality find for me at the beginning of my photography journey.

You can also use a white handkerchief draped over the flash to soften the light. I'm not apposed to using third party batteries, but one time I had one swell up inside the camera and it was very difficult to remove. So the lesson is don't leave a third party battery in camera when not using it for a while. Some would say don't leave any battery in camera when not using it for a while, but if you want to grab the camera for a quick shot that can be problematic.
A bag is often a nice investment too. Choose one that you'll be able to carry all day. But it rarely goes in the "cheap" category. But I have a true cheap item to add to your list : microfiber clothes.
Thanks for your video. As for straps, I've always used Op Tech. They have a nice wide section on the neck part and is made of a strong stretchy type of foam which does not dig into your neck. Highly recommend them!
A remote will allow you to use the bulb exposure setting. Most cameras only go up to 30s of exposure, which is not enough for some styles of photography. To have a longer exposure you need to use the bulb mode, which will keep the shutter open for as long as you keep the shutter button pressed. Of course, 30s+ exposure + your finger on the shutter = one very blurred photo. Remote shutters either have a timer or a lock on the button, allowing you to easily expose for as long as you like.
You missed a good bag, a small blower/brush for the lens, lens hood ... and my personal ... I carry a small reflector, so I may use it to reflect the flash with one hand instead of using it directly.

You forget the most important thing about the Peak Design's strap : it's quickly removable from the dslr (due to the "Anchor links") ! That's why it is that usefull and better than the original^^
On the spare batteries, I have a couple Duracell batteries for my D7200. Two of them combined were about the same price as one Nikon branded one. Energizer I believe makes camera batteries as well.
A few things: 1.) I love that simple background track, what/who is it? 2.) I've read a lot of stories about how third party batteries can cause a lot of issues in a camera up to/including destroying the camera body or lens... Any thoughts on that? I appreciate your channel!
Extra batteries a must for sure. For my Canon I got a coupler and since I shoot mostly indoors that's been SOOOO helpful because I can shoot video all day and never have to change out a battery. Then this week, my remote for the camera arrives (I don't have apps on my cell), but I like that shutter button and until today, I didn't know that's what it was called. As I looked for a wired remote but now I see I had the wrong name. So .. I went with a wireless. AND .. last night I ordered my RODE Wireless Go. Oh my gosh, I can't wait to use it. Right now I'm using the on-board mic for video and I hear all the noises, have to run about and shut off any noise and sometimes even unplug the fridge. And that's my story. Thanks for your posts. Nice video thanks for sharing ^_^ Some tips from my experience. some may be in contrary to yours :) 1 - Storage\Batteries You said having to think if you should shoot a photo or not, to save battery life or storage space, is a bad thing. There are two ways to look at it: When it's a job, or a trip, I get it! Right! Take more! But if it's a free day you go out shooting, taking less might make you invest more thought in each photo - and thus making you a better photographer. and it will weigh less... so more freedom. On a hobby shoot I try to convince myself giving up on the grip for my 600D, too.. 2 - STRAP - I really recommend a cross strap, shoulder strap or however you'll call it, with a Quick Release plate, and a tripod with one, too. This way - The weight is distributed on your neck AND shoulders, so you'll be able to carry a bigger camera for longer time, AND changing from strap to tripod is a breeze. (I use 323 plates from eBay, 10-12$ per set) 3 - Talking about filters and baggage (seen your Full Frame quit video just now) - The best way I found (on the net of course) to minimize costs and baggage is buying adapters to all my lenses to use the same filter thread (currently 72mm, could be 77mm in the future) on them. (I put a UV filter first at the lens original thread, for protection, then adapter, then filters and cap) Then buy the big-thread-filtering-filters! and BAM! Every lens has 5~20 additional grams, BUT the filters bag is at least half as heavy as before! (considering 2 lenses per shoot, about 50~300 grams less depending on kinds and quality of filters and less struggle of finding the right one) ...Also losing a cap is nothing now, I have 10 spare ones that will fit all... 4 - ND Filters - I use ONE Variable ND filters, a cheap one that is, because of the costs and the baggage, again. Instead of carrying many, I carry one. It isn't more bad than the other cheap ND filters. The only drawback I see is when using it almost fully blocking (long exposure only) and it get desaturated. And flares... But in normal conditions, when not shooting straight into the sun, I rarely see flares!
A point missed about the remote shutter release is trying to take pics on bulb. I’ve done a bit of northern light photography where I wanted minute long exposures. It’s hard holding your finger on the button for a minute and not shake the camera.
Pleased to see you mentioned the Manfrotto mini tripod; I've got the not very much bigger next model up - the Pixi Evo - and it's brilliant for ground level shots. I've used it even with my medium format camera and 200mms lens and got sharp shots (when setting mirror lock up and 2 second timer delay). Amazing little 'pod.

For Long term storage get something like a Synology NAS with these you can backup securely to friends Synology and vice versa. All hard drives fail eventually storage solutions need to mindful of this.

i agree with the cam strip, Nikon provides a cheap car sheet belt like strip, and it screams to people from a distance, I carry DSLR. first thing i do after unboxing cam throw the strip.
I didn't loom too far back, but I have a monopod I throughly enjoy using got it from Amazon Japan anc comes with an attachment to make a shorter tripod with.
Just watching this video that you published about two years ago, reminded me that my Joby Gorillapod thingy ended up coming apart after about a month of use! So I used insulating tape to tape the legs together and now just use it as a handheld thingy, mainly for video. 'Thingy' is a technical term btw. LOL
For the polarizer i just buy one that's the size of my biggest lens or even bigger and then use an adapter so I can use the same one on all of them. Much cheaper them buying one for each lens and if you don't need a hood you can often leave the adapter on the lens.

Another cheap item that I think worth having is a bubble / spirit level thingamajig - their cube shaped with spirit levels in various planes - most useful for keeping horizons straight.
James Popsys some cameras have levels built in. Olympus in two dimensions, Fujifilm only in one (in my X-T10),, both in the rear LCD and in the EVF. The Canon 5Ds and other recent 5D cameras have two dimensions on the LCD in a primitive one in the OVF. 80D and three predecessors have one dimension in the LCD, the 80D has a primitive one in the OVF.
I bought a pair of Turpow-badged LP-E10 batteries for my EOS 2000D with a USB charger for £24. Canon LP-E10 are like £60 EACH. The Turpow batteries last LONGER than the battery that came with my camera! My strap is a hand made cobra belt strap made with Type I paracord which attaches via a carabiner at each end to split rings on the body loops. One question, what lighting conditions overwhelm a 1/4000sec shot at 96ISO and f/1.8?? Remote control on the 2000D can be achieved WIRELESSLY using NFC (Near Field connection over WiFi) and the Canon EOS utility (free from the Canon website). Haven't figured out how to take multiple unattended shots with it though, there SHOULD be a way.

How about a lens/filter clean tissue and a blower brush in your camera bag and for cheaper photography with as much fun and including all the good points you raise, how about using film and an SLR camera? Film is available online and development of the negatives plus a CD for your laptop to upload and share, £8. Serious photography anyone can afford.
I grew up using film... but... we hadbulk film loading... and I developed my own film so... I never worried about film But* I do find I take less photos them my photographer friends To the point they comment like ask me if something is Wrong. Reminds me I have filters for my Canon Rebel rod kit lens I am using on my Canon d5 Mark 2 WILL BE fun
Camera strap? (Haven’t got one... but I’ve seen them in operation.... and I want! Problem with the big neck/shoulder straps is how constricting on movement they can be). And a little box/pouch to hold memory cards? (On second thoughts, maybe not essential... but perhaps convenient for some of us?)
Should've mentioned that most cameras support IR remote shutters. It's way superior cause you can use it even in a full body selfie without it showing. Also you can use your phone if it has an IR-blaster like most huawei phones.

Instead of buying filters for all your lenses, you can buy stepper rings. They won't work with all lenses but buying the filter size for the largest lens you have, you can use it anywhere on any lens using a stepper. :-) Just a tip to save some money.
Love the videos, and absolutely had to subscribe ^_^ As for the miniature Manfrotto tripod, I'm going to venture a guess at the model being the Pixi. They also have a newer one (Pixi Evo) that you don't have to spin the tripod around to get it to screw it (Evo has a wheel to do that)
For batteries I'm gonna get another one and get the third party battery grip for the 200D I will get a 128gb card and for storage I'm thinking of this ad I see on Instagram all the time, it's a Kickstarter so I'll wait till it's out properly, the strap is probably gonna be the last thing I change as my Canon is comfortable and I wear it under the hood of a jacket, I'm going to buy some filters off a friend like a variable ND and variable polariser my gorillapods only last like a year so I'm gonna use a manfrotto Pixi mini the battery grip I'm getting says it comes with a remote shutter but I do have a steady hand from long exposures, I'm going to not necessarily get a flash but a light I think it's called the appature m9

Polarizing filters don't polarize light, they cut of light that are polarized perpendicular to the polarizing angle of the filter. This reduces reflections and haze making the colours pop out more.
James, for polarizing filters, I know they reduce the light a bit but do make blue skies and green grass pop in photos on bright days. Would you still use this kind of filter if you were shooting photos/portraits of children on a sunny day? thanks
Hey mate! There are a couple of schools of thought on it, but my take is that polarizers work just as well for outdoor portraits. As you say they can make blues and greens pop, but they can also reduce shine on skin tones too giving the subject much more prominence in the shot. It's perhaps not to everyone's taste, but definitely worth trying to see if you like the effect :)
Cheap light meter. If you like to use manual mode which is important when you save tons of money with used legacy manual lenses, a luxmeter is way cheaper than most photographic light meters. This doesn't apply to flash photography which may require a good flash meter depending on what you like to shoot. The problem with luxmeters is they measure the amount of light rather than exposure value, and converting is not a trivial formula:( I found a great tip in Wikipedia; a lux reading of 80,000 is equivalent to the old "sunny 16 rule" which says in bright sunny conditions like on a beach or snow with a lot of reflected light, set your f-stop at 16 and your shutter speed at the reciprocal of your ISO. Example: f16 and ISO 200 means your shutter speed should be 1/200 of a sec. for proper exposure. You can quickly translate lux values to approximate exposure recalling each f-stop is a factor of 2 difference from an adjacent value. Thus a lux of around 20,000 is 2 stops down from f16, and you need to shoot at f8 or 1/50 sec. or ISO 800 or some equivalent combination.
If you are going to get a flash, drop another 10 bucks and get gels. Grab the strobist collection from Rosco (not sponsored) but has all of what you need and more. Definitely fun to play with. Edit: spelling
My Wasabi's last longer, they have more mAh than my Canon's. I live to have about 3 extra for each body I shoot with. For three day events and things like that I can charge them up in my truck/hotel.
Do you run out of power? If you run out of power and you aren't done shooting, then invest in batteries. I take 12+ cameras to events. I used to haul a power pack to charge batteries, now I just take a bunch of them. I will have 30 or so AA's 10 or so AAA's and at least 20 Canon batteries, 10 for video cameras, 10 for regular cameras. Good luck to you!
What is your plan? Do you want to travel and take pics. Perform events? Sell prints? Edit photos? It seems like you are willing to get the shot regardless of what gear you have. The moment is ALWAYS the key. Keep in mind, what looks awesome on Instagram, may not print or hang well on the wall.

I don't like flashes not because I don't understand them, but because you can always tell something or someone got flashed in the face, unless they've used some very distant reflectors with high-end lighting and probably editing in post. I've always noticed it ever since I was a child. - I just don't "get" flashes because they create this bright shiny glare to the picture, this "deer in headlights" effect, no matter what the subject is. - Artificial lighting is just too tricky to make look good.
fitnessbydan I own an 80D. I suggest the latest Yongnuo YN560 and compatible wireless triggers. The Yongnuo flashes can be set to fire optically, they don't all need a trigger. There are 60cm square softboxes that come with a clamp to hold a speedlight, the whole assembly site on a standard lightstand.

I would not buy a cheap CPL though as they are terrible, one of these is about the best for the job- B + W HTC High Transmission) Cheese Man 82 mm CPL Circular Polarizing Filter (CPL Circular Polarizing Filter CPL Filter with MRC Nano Multi-layer Coating and XS-Pro Slim Construction - Made In Germany by Schneider Kreuznach. It might be beer tokens but with step up rings it fits a all but a couple of my lenses. |How many beer tokens... £180, nooooooooooooo

As improvised softbox, I simply use a tissue attached with a rubberband. It doesn't look so professional, but I'm not a professional, so no problem :)

I have the same Manfrotto Pixi Extreme and love it. I use it as a hand grip when taking video, even in the sea with my GoPro attached.

Pleased to see you mentioned the Manfrotto mini tripod; I've got the not very much bigger next model up - the Pixi Evo - and it's brilliant for ground level shots. I've used it even with my medium format camera and 200mms lens and got sharp shots (when setting mirror lock up and 2 second timer delay). Amazing little 'pod.

For Long term storage get something like a Synology NAS with these you can backup securely to friends Synology and vice versa. All hard drives fail eventually storage solutions need to mindful of this.

i agree with the cam strip, Nikon provides a cheap car sheet belt like strip, and it screams to people from a distance, I carry DSLR. first thing i do after unboxing cam throw the strip.
I didn't loom too far back, but I have a monopod I throughly enjoy using got it from Amazon Japan anc comes with an attachment to make a shorter tripod with.

Just watching this video that you published about two years ago, reminded me that my Joby Gorillapod thingy ended up coming apart after about a month of use! So I used insulating tape to tape the legs together and now just use it as a handheld thingy, mainly for video. 'Thingy' is a technical term btw. LOL

That small tripod is a manfrotto pixie. They now have a couple of models but I prefer and own the same version as you.

Binocular straps are excellent as camera straps. No neck issues.
For the polarizer i just buy one that's the size of my biggest lens or even bigger and then use an adapter so I can use the same one on all of them. Much cheaper them buying one for each lens and if you don't need a hood you can often leave the adapter on the lens.

Another cheap item that I think worth having is a bubble / spirit level thingamajig - their cube shaped with spirit levels in various planes - most useful for keeping horizons straight.

James Popsys some cameras have levels built in. Olympus in two dimensions, Fujifilm only in one (in my X-T10),, both in the rear LCD and in the EVF. The Canon 5Ds and other recent 5D cameras have two dimensions on the LCD in a primitive one in the OVF. 80D and three predecessors have one dimension in the LCD, the 80D has a primitive one in the OVF.
I bought a pair of Turpow-badged LP-E10 batteries for my EOS 2000D with a USB charger for £24. Canon LP-E10 are like £60 EACH. The Turpow batteries last LONGER than the battery that came with my camera! My strap is a hand made cobra belt strap made with Type I paracord which attaches via a carabiner at each end to split rings on the body loops.
One question, what lighting conditions overwhelm a 1/4000sec shot at 96ISO and f/1.8??
Remote control on the 2000D can be achieved WIRELESSLY using NFC (Near Field connection over WiFi) and the Canon EOS utility (free from the Canon website). Haven't figured out how to take multiple unattended shots with it though, there SHOULD be a way.

How about a lens/filter clean tissue and a blower brush in your camera bag and for cheaper photography with as much fun and including all the good points you raise, how about using film and an SLR camera? Film is available online and development of the negatives plus a CD for your laptop to upload and share, £8. Serious photography anyone can afford.
I grew up using film... but... we hadbulk film loading... and I developed my own film so... I never worried about film
But* I do find I take less photos them my photographer friends
To the point they comment like ask me if something is Wrong.
Reminds me I have filters for my Canon Rebel rod kit lens I am using on my Canon d5 Mark 2

Camera strap? (Haven’t got one... but I’ve seen them in operation.... and I want! Problem with the big neck/shoulder straps is how constricting on movement they can be).

Should've mentioned that most cameras support IR remote shutters. It's way superior cause you can use it even in a full body selfie without it showing. Also you can use your phone if it has an IR-blaster like most huawei phones.

Instead of buying filters for all your lenses, you can buy stepper rings. They won't work with all lenses but buying the filter size for the largest lens you have, you can use it anywhere on any lens using a stepper. :-) Just a tip to save some money.

As for the miniature Manfrotto tripod, I'm going to venture a guess at the model being the Pixi. They also have a newer one (Pixi Evo) that you don't have to spin the tripod around to get it to screw it (Evo has a wheel to do that)

For batteries I'm gonna get another one and get the third party battery grip for the 200D I will get a 128gb card and for storage I'm thinking of this ad I see on Instagram all the time, it's a Kickstarter so I'll wait till it's out properly, the strap is probably gonna be the last thing I change as my Canon is comfortable and I wear it under the hood of a jacket, I'm going to buy some filters off a friend like a variable ND and variable polariser my gorillapods only last like a year so I'm gonna use a manfrotto Pixi mini the battery grip I'm getting says it comes with a remote shutter but I do have a steady hand from long exposures, I'm going to not necessarily get a flash but a light I think it's called the appature m9

Polarizing filters don't polarize light, they cut of light that are polarized perpendicular to the polarizing angle of the filter. This reduces reflections and haze making the colours pop out more.

James, for polarizing filters, I know they reduce the light a bit but do make blue skies and green grass pop in photos on bright days. Would you still use this kind of filter if you were shooting photos/portraits of children on a sunny day? thanks
Hey mate! There are a couple of schools of thought on it, but my take is that polarizers work just as well for outdoor portraits. As you say they can make blues and greens pop, but they can also reduce shine on skin tones too giving the subject much more prominence in the shot. It's perhaps not to everyone's taste, but definitely worth trying to see if you like the effect :)

Cheap light meter. If you like to use manual mode which is important when you save tons of money with used legacy manual lenses, a luxmeter is way cheaper than most photographic light meters. This doesn't apply to flash photography which may require a good flash meter depending on what you like to shoot.
The problem with luxmeters is they measure the amount of light rather than exposure value, and converting is not a trivial formula:( I found a great tip in Wikipedia; a lux reading of 80,000 is equivalent to the old "sunny 16 rule" which says in bright sunny conditions like on a beach or snow with a lot of reflected light, set your f-stop at 16 and your shutter speed at the reciprocal of your ISO. Example: f16 and ISO 200 means your shutter speed should be 1/200 of a sec. for proper exposure. You can quickly translate lux values to approximate exposure recalling each f-stop is a factor of 2 difference from an adjacent value. Thus a lux of around 20,000 is 2 stops down from f16, and you need to shoot at f8 or 1/50 sec. or ISO 800 or some equivalent combination.
If you are going to get a flash, drop another 10 bucks and get gels. Grab the strobist collection from Rosco (not sponsored) but has all of what you need and more. Definitely fun to play with.

My Wasabi's last longer, they have more mAh than my Canon's. I live to have about 3 extra for each body I shoot with. For three day events and things like that I can charge them up in my truck/hotel.

Do you run out of power? If you run out of power and you aren't done shooting, then invest in batteries. I take 12+ cameras to events. I used to haul a power pack to charge batteries, now I just take a bunch of them. I will have 30 or so AA's 10 or so AAA's and at least 20 Canon batteries, 10 for video cameras, 10 for regular cameras. Good luck to you!

What is your plan? Do you want to travel and take pics. Perform events? Sell prints? Edit photos? It seems like you are willing to get the shot regardless of what gear you have. The moment is ALWAYS the key. Keep in mind, what looks awesome on Instagram, may not print or hang well on the wall.

I don't like flashes not because I don't understand them, but because you can always tell something or someone got flashed in the face, unless they've used some very distant reflectors with high-end lighting and probably editing in post. I've always noticed it ever since I was a child. - I just don't "get" flashes because they create this bright shiny glare to the picture, this "deer in headlights" effect, no matter what the subject is. - Artificial lighting is just too tricky to make look good.
Have prices jumped up in price? Flash and transcievers were said to be around £30 each.. But the links are to £80 + £50..
When using filters, buy a step-up ring so that you can use one filter on multiple lens diameters. Good quality filters ain't cheap these days...

fitnessbydan I own an 80D. I suggest the latest Yongnuo YN560 and compatible wireless triggers. The Yongnuo flashes can be set to fire optically, they don't all need a trigger.
There are 60cm square softboxes that come with a clamp to hold a speedlight, the whole assembly site on a standard lightstand.
Yeah, changing the strap was the best thing I could do imho.. And getting a decent tripod.
