  • OpenAI showed off its new AI video generator yesterday, and how it can create high quality realistic videos from a simple text prompt. And what it showed is both... amazing and terrifying. I don't know how to feel about it. Do you? We're... we're gonna need a universal basic income...

    Well working at a job for survival really sucks. So UBI sounds nice. But having ai help me in my job is even better. Doesn’t have to replace

    • @anoraker

      Why not both? (Setting aside that it's the higherups that'll decide if you should be replaced or assisted by AI)

    "we need a universal basic income" - because you can't compete with a robot creating videos? why cant you do another job than creating videos on youtube? idk seems weird to me.
    btw it doesnt mean that they will be able to replace you unless you cant provide more than what a robot without feelings can create.

    • @anoraker

      Listen to the whole video. Can I do it better? Probably. Forever? Not so sure. Faster? Definitely not. Cheaper? Absolutely not. And we see that in business already. Journalists are already being replaced by AI, not because AI is better… it’s not. But because it’s cheaper and faster. And so I move for the next job… thats replaced by cheaper AI. And the next job … replaced again by cheaper AI. Until there are no jobs. And we need a universal basic income. These videos were created by a simple text prompt. Which do you think the bean counters will really buy? Humans with paychecks, health insurance, vacations, and benefits? Or cheap AI. Do you really think quality matters to them? Or the bottom line. This is the future. And denying is to bury your head in the sand until we’re all lost and broken

    • @veryfake

      What about jobs like doctor? A mechanic? I think you just can't handle the fear inside you and you gotta fix it somehow externally. Just accept that things are going to change, adapt to it. You can do it (if you want to). Or you can choose to be scared. Up to you my man.

    • @anoraker
      @anoraker  5 місяців тому +2

      Funny you should list both those. Yes, companies are working on replacing BOTH of those jobs with AI and automation. Google already has patents for AI medical diagnosis, and ai doctor sites already exist. I’ve had insurance that tried to make me use those chatbots before consulting the doctor.
      I accept that things are going to change. But we also have to accept the consequences of those changes and adapt to them. If we take most if not all of the jobs, we’ll need to provide a new system of income.
      And that’s not even a bad thing! If we embrace a future where these things can be automated, then why not free up humans to just live and not work?
      But if that’s the route we’re going, we need to be prepared to act accordingly.

      @@anoraker Okay let's assume you're right. Why be scared of something that's gonna happen in the future? You're living in the now and nothing of it has happened yet. We will see if / when it happens.

    • @anoraker
      @anoraker  5 місяців тому +2

      There's a difference between being scared and acknowledging where things are going, and what we'll need to do about it. The only "scared" thing to do is to pretend it's not the upcoming reality and be shocked when it happens.

    Even if a UBI makes sense at the point this is all done (questionable) it certainly doesn't make sense before we arrive at that point.
    This is still too early, and we don't know whether this curve will continue or hit a barrier, yet.
    There is a lot of hype here, we don't know inference times, how difficult limitations and problems with it will be to resolve, etc.
    Of course, it's impressive, but it's hardly going to replace much of anyone yet. It's still a pure toy right now, at this stage. You'd probably spend more time trying to get it to be exactly what you want for anything other than meme style content.
    The problem with a UBI is it doesn't increase production of actual real world goods, it will just inflate consumer prices to a level where it'd be a wash in most cases. Production allows prices to come down, so far as Sora improves in a way that allows production of video content to increase, the cost of that will come down, but prices of things not yet impacted by similar tech will not.
    Basically, just let the economy (that is, people acting in their own interest) do what they do, and the remaining things to do will get filled. Some of us have difficulty finding time to clean our house, mow our lawn, garden, etc. and we'd like to do all of it. So, AI could free us up to do all these things. Maybe then robots can do those things too, but we don't want them to because we prefer to keep that one area separate, much like humans prefer to watch humans play chess than to watch the better AIs do that.
    Same thing could happen with video content or other creative output, even if AI is "better" it is potentially so divergent in fulfilling niches that people start actually wanting content that has a broader appeal to have connection.
    Basically, nobody knows what will happen, and everyone should just slow down on trying to predict the future from very minimal data points.
    Is it scary, sure...but a black hole could pass by our solar system and destroy us all in an instant, or a super volcano could erupt, or a massive meteor come out of an unexpected region of space, etc. Nothing is certain.

    • @anoraker

      You think waiting to the exact moment something tremendously complicated is needed to start setting it up is a good idea? This isn't too early. This is the right time to get started so it's ready on time.
      As for the rest of your comments about basic income, we've done a BUNCH of test trials and every trial has proven you wrong. A basic income has made people MORE productive, and given them upward trajectory, as they finally felt like they had a safety net to take a chance on new jobs they always wanted/etc. as more well off people do.

    • @Korodarn
      @Korodarn 5 місяців тому

      @@anoraker Basic income has only been tested on small scales, over relatively brief periods of time. Incentive impacts are extremely hard to gather because
      1) They know they are in a trial and will act differently in response
      2) They are only a portion of the economy, so impacts on things like prices are not going to be felt.
      To say every trial has "proven" me wrong, rather than merely providing evidence that I might be, indicates an attachment to this particular idea. I have read about many of the trials, but many of them ended, and were not renewed, which didn't suggest to me that those running felt it had a strong enough benefit to be worth the potential costs.
      I fully admit that I don't like the idea of a UBI, because it requires a large centralized state to pull off and I don't think anyone should trust large centralized states. If it's a great idea, then I think people should be able to agree to doing something similar to it entirely voluntarily. There are certainly plenty of billionaires that proclaim to like this idea now, but none of them has gone so far as to even consider setting up a fund with those of like mind on the issue.
      What everyone (billionaires included) wants is to have other people's money taken to fund this. As with most taxes, this burden will not fall on those with the most, but on those somewhere in the middle of the distribution. Because even if there are taxes for it, it's mostly going to be fueled with debt and money printing.

    • @anoraker
      @anoraker  5 місяців тому +2

      @@Korodarn …that’s pretty much how everything works now anyway. Whether it be food stamps or military endeavors. If I can choose where my taxes go, then into the pockets of people to live better lives is a pretty good one to me.

    People are looking at it wrong. I'm sure there were writers that were afraid of the printing press or keyboard. AI ends up being a tool. You'll just have to use it to code faster, save time on finding stock videos or doing CGI, and so on.

    • @anoraker
      @anoraker  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes, AI could be used for that and is useful for that. But it's also being taken much further than that. Already news outfits are laying off journalists in favor of having AI write articles from beginning to end. And with video creation like this, you don't need camera people, directors, etc. You just generate the video and you're done. Faster is good. "Instead of humans" is not. And that's where AI is ALREADY going.

    It's not going to put the person typing in the instructions out of a job. The creater will use his imagination and his words/keyboard vs his camera is all I am seeing changing. Less physical work, more creative work. This is a tool that will enable more people to unleash their creative minds and story telling without having a million dollar budget for gear, actors etc..Sure some actors may lose their job or heaven forbid have to take less money, but those woudl be the people I can see this tech displacing, the actors, not the writers and creators.

    • @anoraker
      @anoraker  5 місяців тому

      Even that's a reduction of jobs. Think of it in the same terms of automation. Whereas it took 10 humans to do a thing, now it's 1 human to maintain a robot.
      Whereas it took a creative writer, a creative director, a creative camera person, a location scout, an animal expert, a narrator, etc.... it's just one human typing instructions. Do you see what I mean?

  • @InnocentiusLacrimosa

    People looking for flaws in these videos to prove "this will never amount for anything" are the type of people who watched early AI pictures and counted fingers as a proof that AI pictures will never be used for anything. Or the people who were looking for simple mistakes in AI translation to prove that AI will never be useful to translate between languages. One needs to look at the forest instead of the individual trees to get a perspective where we are heading.
