It’s not a better idea necessarily. It’s not true competition (which is what capitalism is about) since rental car companies get taxed too. Once Turo starts getting taxed, or rental companies stop getting taxed, only then will it be true free market competition.

When they walked us out to the car I noticed right away it was a v6 (no brembos, smaller wheels, badging). They tried to play it off like it was the same thing. Mike Gaskin because Turo needs no physical presence. Here in Madrid a local car sharing company has partnered with the airport. I can use one of their cars to get to or from the airport. They are all electric Renault Zoes. I drop it Infront of my house and forget about it. It's faster and cheaper than a taxi or even the metro if it is 3 of us. And the airport gets 7 Euros per rental. I think that is fair. Turo could do the same.

I had a printed list of car models from the website and the in-store material showed the car he wanted to give me as sub compact, but the sales guy tried to tell me both the Enterprise website and in-store material were out-of-date and the car he wanted to give me was a mid sized - which it was not!

    Turo:
Does not have unlimited mileages (bad for long road trips)
Does not allow one way (you can only drive around town)
Does not offer collision waiver (you can destroy a rental car from Hertz with waiver and pay nothing but not Turo, even full coverage requires you to pay)
Does not inspect or maintain their cars (some owners are lazy and car condition varies)
Does not have certainty and the reservation can be either canceled or changed (no grab and go technology)
Dose not offer standard corporate check in (different owners have different attitudes about your licensing requirements)

I was trying Turo for awhile but started to notice a reoccurring theme with many of their car providers.....they put off routine maintenance on their cars to maximize uptime & to maximize profit. My first bad experience was a Mercedes that was a great car except one problem I forgot to check the manufacture date on the tires of the vehicle.
We went on a trip to LA & suddenly a tire comes completely apart. When the tow guy shows up he points out the tires on the car are 6 years old. This happened over & over when accepting cars & it got to the point where it became a hassle when I was in a hurry. I rented a Tesla where while on the trip the doors would not open & the same with the rear trunk. Guess what Turo provides almost zero support. I had a car where the tire went flat & the owner had no jack in the car to lift the car. I called Turo & they told me 'to try my best getting the tire changed & they would reimburse'.....guess what still waiting for that reimbursement. Too much trouble for too little enjoyment.

After a few years, they’ve been including fees after fees on top of their rentals~ it not as appealing as before. I first found out about Turo from Doug Demuro's videos and I tried it out in Germany.
    I had several reasons:
    1. More interesting cars than in rental companies.
    2. You get the specific car you choose, nothing like "renting car in economy category" there.
    3. It's quite a lot cheaper than rental companies.
    4. And a BIG ONE: no hidden fees, no ripping you off on location, no holding you hostage over made up damage. I had very bad experience with traditional car rental companies before. It was literally the worst experience I ever had with any business in my life. With Turo, I paid exactly as much as the app told me via credit card. Owner was a cool guy, I had lovely time. No surprises later. Everybody wins.
I know this almost sounds like an ad for Turo, but really, I would be very happy if more people started using it and more people in more locations started listing their cars. In Europe, it's unfortunately only available in the biggest cities and I would really like that to change. I'd like to be able to rent Turo cars all around the continent. I'd be so happy if one day it was as popular as airbnb and all the crooks in traditional rental companies went bankrupt.

My dad runs a business renting out cars on Turo in Los Angeles. He started in late 2017 and grew pretty fast over a couple of years. Now he has a big parking lot near LAX (LA’s biggest airport) and fleet of almost 75 cars, most of them are leased, but some are owned. This business is brilliant, because with a good credit score you can get an average nice car for around $300 per month. Assuming that renting out such a car would earn you $35 per day, it would take around 9 days per month to cover the expenses. The other 21 days are basically profits

A few reasons why I am still going with the rental car companies. I will pay more for the convenience of being able to pick up and drop off right at the airport. It saves me time and that's important over the course of many trips. I get a clean, well maintained car with support service if I break down and a replacement car as well if needed, nice to have those things. I don't care to send my picture to strangers. Getting bonus points and miles from the rental car companies is a positive factor in cost that's not discussed unless Turo awards them?

Turo is more expensive in general and you are very restricted on mileage.

Tried to use Turo in the U.K., owner cancelled the night before and Turo’s call centre was closed. Their website directed me to the us number who refused to help me. Had to rent from Hertz last minute who were much more helpful

THEFIRE360 I love AIRBNB, VRBO but Turo is risky. You drive, you break it, you can be liable to pay. As an owner, you could be screwed. How many times do you need to rent out a car to break even?

@@sidjtd well, I guess that's something to consider. Turo should try working on some kind of accountability measure.

I'm more interested in knowing how was the car unlocked

I'm interested in knowing how the ignition startsthe owner unlocks it remotely the first time that the renter picks it up, but after that I'd like to know how the ignition is started. I assume there's a key hidden inside each vehicle which is perfect for people who steal!

When I rented mine through Turo, there was a lockbox attached to the car side. Owner messaged the code via the Turo app, I punched in the code, and the car keys were inside the lockbox. Similar to how realtors keep house keeps.

I have used Turo over and over again. The complex insurance of rental car companies is outright sneaky and incredibly confusing. The ease of getting and the reduced cost is outstanding with Turo.

I’ve used Turo a few times and driven some really sweet cars for pretty decent prices. It can add a really fun element to any trip. Car rental companies can weep all they want. Turo is a great product that’s not going away.

Most cars on touro cost more than rental cars. Hertz, Sixt, and others offer high end vehicles at decent prices. I find those on touro cost twice as much.

Of course rental agencies will be mad. Turo is simply more efficient. Rental agencies are jealous, and jealousy inevitably turns to anger. If anything, car rental agencies should view Turo as competition and try to improve their own product rather than squash their competitor.

Car rental companies don’t have access to venture capital willing to get soaked for the vague promise of unlimited profitability through establishing a platform monopoly
