So glad that you show these cities! It makes me sad that most people think that Spain is only Barcelona and Madrid... Spain has much more to offer.
Well said. Jesus, I am so sick of hearing "I'm going to Barcelona". Even Seville and Malaga seem like outposts these days. I love all manner of Spanish places but what marks it out to its advantage compared to other countries are its cities. Most cities are horrible places to live in but in Spain they can be very good. I tell so many British colleagues to fly to Madrid, enjoy it, and then get a train to Segovia, Toledo, Avila and Burgos etc. Most foreigners no very little about Castlle Leon but there is absolute treasure there.
@@welshtoro3256 ...and the beautiful Salamanca :)
@@2012MariCarmen Yep, I love Salamanca very much. Zamora gets a thumbs up too. I didn't mention them because they are a bit of a way out on a train from Madrid for ordinary visitors. My father in law, who is a bit of a local historian, comes from Valladolid and used to drive my wife and I all over the region. I've seen absolute gold that even Spaniards have never seen let alone foreign tourists. All the best. WT
@@welshtoro3256Strange place but I liked Valladolid including the beach on the edge of the river. I understand it has changed now but when I visited they were a few scantily dressed ladies (being polite) on it with several men of the dirty mac brigade watching.
@@stratman7810 ...So any man interested in a scantily dressed lady is automatically a member of the dirty mac brigade ? SInce when did it become a crime to admire the beauty of the fair sex ?
Great episode as always. You mentioned Leon being among your top 10 cities, I'm curious to know which other towns have a place in that ranking. Thanks!
Stuart is the most respectful UA-camr out there! Speaking softly and respecting people around gives a feeling of a friendly talk and quiet fun walk around.
Well done 👍👌😊 !

I was in Leon a few times. Last time was on the Camino. I visited the historical monuments and saw the cup they believe to be the actual holy Grail. Quite interesting! I do remember all those signs on the road with the Castilla crossed out from Castilla y León. Sometimes it was written Leon solo. Had the best pulpo in a village of Leon. It was caramelized which was the only time time I saw it cooked that way. It was amazing. I really love that whole region as I am a fan of both food and history. I hope to return soon in order to finish the Camino and visit more places.
Melissa Sirois can I ask where is the grail? Cathedral?

Melissa Sirois thank you
I think there are lots of "the" holy grail. We have one in Valencia.
@@rogerdavies2796 offcourse. Everyone claims to have the real one. It was a nice piece and it does come with an interesting history.
It's true the neighbourhood street you walked down could have been where I had lived. Stuart you've lived in Spain too long because what's most impressive is their bumper to bumper parking skills! Leon looks like somewhere I'd like to explore and people watch while working my way down a menu in the late afternoon. Gorgeous.
My wife and I enjoyed this video as Leon is the first place we visited in Spain. We landed by ferry in Santander and rode through the Picos to get there. I have a lovely photo of my wife, who comes from the flattest area in the UK and hated heights, looking terrified when we stopped near the top of mountain in the Picos, but in a day or so she lost this fear and was happy going anywhere. We stayed at the Parador and after dinner by good luck there was a large firework display and we stood on the bridge near the Parador watching and I like to think it was arranged just for us. You are right about everybody being friendly. There was a wedding on at the cathedral the next day and we soon realised that a lot of the local population, who had nothing to do with the wedding just go in to watch and we were welcomed in join them. Another thing that sticks out is that it was the first time we heard storks clacking their beaks as they were nesting on the Parador. We can still hear them to this day. We have visited again since but stayed in another hotel, very good but much cheaper!
YES STUART!! Great to see you out and about again. Great Video!
I live in Spain in a small city called Cartagena, I hope that one day you come here and make a video about it. A
Cartagena ❤❤❤
I have visited and stayed in Cartagena with my wife. I can remember looking out from my hotel balcony whilst a marching band walked round, no doubt to welcome us there!!! I can also remember the submarine plus much more.
Thank Goodness I watched to the end - At last we could see people about !! I know Leon very well (I have family living there and born there) and I know you were out early, but the place looked abandoned with all the shops, bars and restaurants still closed. Shame about the all the graffiti. The Barrio Humido in the evenings is the best part of the whole city. I recommend to anyone that Leon is worth a visit, and many of the surrounding towns and villages too. Great video, Stuart !!
Were in Leon in October 2019. Very nice town. But even more-so I loved Salamanca.
Missing Spain a lot; now living in Philadelphia.
Hi Stuart, Looks like a lovely place thank you for sharing take care
I enjoy visiting Spain. However, the graffiti is sad to see on beautiful buildings and just everywhere.
Yes, thankfully they normally resist spraying paint on historic buildings but it's everywhere you look. Ditto in Italy. So sad !
I agree about the graffiti. Here in North Las Vegas they added a sur charge to the water bill to eradicate graffiti. I now have an app on my phone and I take a photo, it GPS the site and it is removed by the following day on government property. I wish the graffiti issue would be addressed.

Love Leon. I went through on the Camino de Santiago and my knees were shot. I planned a rest day, but how can you stay in, in such a special place? What can I say? Go there. Don't miss the church and museum of San Isedro. Awesome. And spend the couple of euros to tour the cathedral. You won't be disappointed. Hasta luego.
Beautiful closing shots Stuart - really enjoyed them, keep up the good work!
Yes, you are correct. Leon is part of the Camino Frances...
Thank you Stuart! One of my favorite cities. Thanks for the Skillshare link.
Hi,im from León,i LOVE you visit leon, thank you so much to decided to visit Spain
Great video...was in Leon for several days last year and really enjoyed it. Very walkable, good food, and relaxed vibe.
This seems to be a very charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
Thanks for the video. I went to León when I was a boy and have very good memories of it. Many years later, I visited all the cities around: Zamora, Salamanca, Valladolid, Palencia, etc. They are awsome indeed! But don't forget to visit Cáceres, below Salamanca on the map. There, you could see the largest and best preserved medieval quarter in Europe. It's really amazing!
Greetings from Jerez de la Frontera (Sherry), Southern Spain.
This is the city where I was born. There isn't an independentist movement in León Stuart. What it's happening there is some people from the three provinces of the antique original region of León, León, Zamora and Salamanca want to separate from Castille given since the beginning of the autonomous communities it's been an artificial creation made by politicians.
There's a small, by now, movement who is trying to promote a new autonomous community for León separated from Castille.
Castilla and León were always two different regions very similar between them but different. About the language, I think NO ONE knows the old language Astur-Leones anymore, as much the "bable" spoken in Asturias could be considered a dialect which comes from that language but very few people can speak it rightly.
yeah when I was in Salamanca and Zamora 7 years ago I saw the occasional graffiti with "Pais de Leons" sprayed onto walls.
The language is still alive in certain part of the province. I do speak it so you cannot say nobody does! :-)
LEÓN , Astur y Celta . Castilla ... Vascos . LEÓN , REINO . Castilla , Condado .
Wow, it's hard to tell in the video but when he's in front of the church and it's empty, it's much smaller than it seems. It's actually a quite massive area. When I visited it was literally jam packed with people. Good video
15:10 you should have mentioned that was Gaudí designed building one of the the few projects he did outside Catalunya. He also did the bishops residence right beside their cathedral in a town not from from Leon called Astorga
I had a very good friend Julia Gonzalez who was from Leon but we met in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 where we worked in a nursing home . Sadly she passed away a few years ago but she was a wonderful lady . By the way I’m from India 🇮🇳 with Spanish ancestors but can’t trace where they came from .Cheers .

As you said Castilian people are very friendly and helpful. I live in Catalonia and that is one of the things that I miss the most.
Not everything in CASTILLA (Palencia, Burgos, Valladolid, Soria, Ávila y Segovia) Y LEÓN (Zamora, León y Salamanca) is Castilian, my friend.
León no es Castilla. Una parte es Castilla y la otra León

hi Stuart, just saw the Leon video, great, I've been there. If Leon is in your top ten list of places to visit or live what are the other nine. My favourite city would be Pamplona, amazing view from the upper section (historic) of the city, 2 hrs. from Madrid if you need to go there, 1.5 hrs to San Sebastian beach, 1.5 hrs. from France where I can speak French all day, and the best night life.
weather is not too hot. love your vids keep up the good work.

At 10.25 you show a menu. I believe that those are pinchos or raciones, not tapas. As you know, tapas are freely provided at the discretion of the bar, when you order a glass of wine. So you pay for a pincho, but not a tapa.
It's a beautiful town. It would have to try an attach all those old apartments to a regional dynaflow from Bilbao. You need to secure against drought for the whole of northern Spain, but attaching the homeowners to the energy generated from the dynaflow once it is further inland would allow for an investment to be made in the region's agricultural production and that would include significant amount of solar, meaning that you'd have amble water and green energy for industrial production, and it's easy to link Spain by speedrail and rail into the centere of towns because you'd utilize the same easements as you do for the water infrastructure. Leon would be a place where the historical buildings are renovated and converted into double equity, and the new builds designed to capture their own double equity, but the older condominiums need to invest in ownership of the dynaflow project so they only have maintence costs per year for use of a certain amount of electricity and water, and they can sell the rest, or see that the sale of the remainder of the energy is invested on their behalf so long as they own the condo which is attached to the infrastructure.
Essentially, rising costs for water and energy diminish standards of living over time. We have to invest in this infrastructure, but we always want the best quality at the lowest price because these are more necessities, rather than the things people are intrigued into spending their money on. On the other hand, they are so practical, and having fixed rates for use of energy, as a business, allows business to really produce in a way which is very efficient and which leads to success or failure which is more predictable. It doesn't matter if your condo is attached to photovoltaics, hydroelectric, wind or nuclear, the fact that you have charging stations on the sidewalks in from of old condominium buildings is evidence that the owner of those condos have them attached to an electricity production infrastructure, and you have to have a neighborhood permit to part there and use those charging stations. Otherwise, you'll be fined and towed!
Very interesting video again, Stuart. Gracias querido Aussi😁
Thanks for sharing this beautiful and spectacular video. Just a little think to comment in: In León there is no any independent political movement, just there is a regional movement in order to separate León from Castilla, but never from Spain 🇪🇸. We, the people from León are proud to feel as Spaniards and as Leoneses, but not Castilians. That’s the point for differencing in. ☺️ Congrats for this video, it’s really helpful for people who wants to know more about our beautiful city and culture! 👏🏻👏🏻😀💪🏻
Great video the ending was incredible
If León is along the Camino, the residents would have been hospitable to many pilgrims and tourists, thus friendly. How is the Camino business now?

1:20 no, that track was closed and conserver after the city expanded, now is only a nice way to walk from the center to university

Leon appears to be a good place to visit if one uses a wheelchair for mobility. No curbs, fairly smooth streets.
Nice City, I do like the 4 seasons, maybe will visit some day.

Good, informative video. I think that if you can get back to videos like this, you will have more viewers and definitely fewer comments of dubious logic that lately have proliferated on your channel. It would be helpful to put a little label on the last part of the video when you go by a place of touristic interest.

León has advantages and disadvantages like any place. Unless you live there for at least a year I think it's very hard to draw conclusions. It also depends a lot on what you like and what you compare it to. I have travelled through León numerous times in the last 50 years, it's certainly a lot better than it used to be, but that could be said of many of the cities in Spain, particularly the more industrial ones like Bilbao.
For me, the most obvious advantages you mention in your video, although you could have said more about the Camino de Santiago as there is more than one route connected to León. The Camino Francés, the East to West route from Roncesvalles (or St. Jean Pied de Port) to Santiago de Compostela, passes through León, which would be a little over the halfway point. There is also the Camino El Salvador that goes from León, over the Cantabrian mountains, to Oviedo. From Oviedo you can continue on to link up with the Camino del Norte on the coast, or take the Camino Primitivo route from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela. The Camino de Madrid comes up from Madrid to meet the Camino Francés at Sahugún, which is just East of León.
The four seasons aspect of living in León could be an attraction for some, although the colder winter temperatures are probably not so appealing for Brits, or other Northern Europeans, that come to live in Spain for good weather. The hot weather in summer, although rarely as hot as Madrid or cities in the south of Spain, might be a challenge for a few weeks of the year. It''s not too far to drive up into the cooler mountain areas or even get to the Cantabrian coast, which is spectacular in the summer months. Even Galicia is not so far way, where greenery and cooler climate would cool down the hot and bothered coming from the northern planes of Spain!
I don't remember seeing any places to swim near León, but in the region of El Bierzo there are many rivers that are partially closed off to form natural swimming areas in the summer, Balboa is one such place, where they also have had an annual Reggae festival for the last 10 years or more.
León has excellent train links between Gijón, Ovideo, La Coruña, Madrid and Irún; to name but a few. The surrounding areas of León are quite bleak in terms of unpopulated villages, declining agricultural industry and lack of work opportunities (although this could be said about many rural or semi-rural areas of Spain). The Camino de Santiago has breathed some life, particularly in the last 10 to 15 years, into many villages that would otherwise have become abandoned.
I don’t think you have to be sorry for the builders of the cathedrals! They were great public projects, giving jobs to many who took pride in what they built.
Thx Stu, looks like a great place!
Saludos desde España 🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸😁😁😁

Vivo en Barcelona pero León es la tierra de mis antepasados. Mi padre me enseñó a amar esta tierra profundamente. Leon looks fine but it's the type of people that make up these small / medium sized cities that often define them. I was in Zamora for 4 months and the people were dreadful, gossips, two faced, they tried to pull scams to get money out of me with sob stories then turned their back on me when I politely declined. Not many opportunities in cities like that and you do wonder what sort of people get left behind in such places. Cities such as Zamora have been on the decline for several decades relative to other Spanish cities. It's ok to do tourism there for 5 days or so but to live there is quite another thing.
In other words, you define or base your opinion on a city by telling what happened to you in a different city than León, much smaller and less cosmopolitan, almost a village, and all this for an unpleasant personal experience that you supposedly lived.
Since you are not Spanish you have no idea what you are talking about. The people of Castilla and León, two different regions although belonging to the same autonomous community, are famous for their nobility, sobriety, respect and directness. They are direct, simple and friendly people and, as I can see, thousands of times more educated than you.
Really very coherent and rational ... (ironic mode on)
Good to know
I visited Zamora sometime back; liked it a lot, very historic and peaceful. The Parador is great. Sorry for the experiences you had though.
I've been to Zamora a few times and gone by on the highway at least four times a year but it seems like a nice, little city with a beautiful location overlooking the Duero River. You shouldn't generalize about the inhabitants. They can't all be gossips or scammers. After all it has 61,000 people and that is not a small village where everyone wants to know what you are doing, who you go out with, or your sexual orientation. I would imagine that it would be a more conservative city than Barcelona, Málaga, or Madrid but it can't be as bad as you describe it.
@@rayvogensen2983 sounds to me like you l didn't get to know many of the locals especially those that strut up and down Santa Clara with all their airs and graces. I've been going to Zamora on and off on short trip there all my life and you only get to know people and their true intentions and regard for you after spending several months with them. Previously I had crossed paths with them a day here and a day there throughout the years but never any great.length of time. After my.4 months there acts of intended betrayal and fraud and general nastiness. I never returned and never will. Economic hardships and failed businesses and marriages and general dissatisfaction with their lives drove them to do this to me. I am happy that I got the hell out of there. All these problems came.from different sets of people there in those.4 months. If you are an outsider be on guard, two of them were distant family to me.

Stuart, as a long time fan I have to encourage you to ditch the adverts. Don't go there mate. I'll leave it at that. I like Leon and the biggest visitor attraction is the incredible cathedral which is one of the very best in Spain. Unique in Spain actually due to the amazing stained glass columns which are only comparable in France. I have to say that most of the video made the place look pretty rubbish walking around crummy streets full of graffiti. The food and menus are regulation stuff all over the country. I like Leon for a visit but it's on a par with Valladolid. For me a city like Granada beats it hands down.
I hate graffiti tagging too but i also hate tagging with advertisement (not a dig at stu) billboards, clothes, shops, sunglass(ffs),tables, beerglasses, lorries, buses, planes, trains and automobiles :)
