Why Guild Wars 1 is STILL one of the best MMORPGs, almost 15 years after its release

- Once again, it pulled me back in! I'm playing the ORIGINAL Guild Wars again, and needed to share my thoughts on why it separates itself from other MMOs, and if I think there will ever be another MMO epic like it.

Returning to my MMORPG roots, I'm playing the original Guild Wars again. And it STILL holds up so well this many years later, and separates itself as one of the best in the genre. While I hope we see a spiritual successor to this game, or I hope Guild Wars 3 happens and brings back these game mechanics, I'm really skeptical. And it sucks, because the day Guild Wars 1 shuts down will be a really sad one, so it'd be amazing if something similar was on the horizon. TELL ME WHAT YOUR BEST MEMORIES OF GW1 ARE! And hit that LIKE/SUBSCRIBE button if you enjoyed the video, thanks guys!!
is this game still alive? like plenty of people playing?
@@Mike-ok1cq Hey Mike, yeah it looks to me like it's got about the same population as it had in 2018, I still see plenty of players in the hubs and I'm part of a very active alliance that has 1000s of members, who are regularly looking to do group content together. I'm going to make another video discussing if the game is worth playing in 2019/how the population is doing once I've looked into it a bit more though! Should get that out in the next few weeks
@Saul Ruiz because of the way the game works it is very low overhead on the developers part. It just got some decent updates about a year ago. I would expect it to last for years to come.
Going for the titles was much more interesting and meaningful. The titles now have like little meaning.
Great video, but I don't believe you really took a nap.
Guild Wars 1 is and will always be my favorite MMO ... I can't stop thinking of the wonderful time I had with it. I met so many great people there ... really miss the good ol' days
Yeah, it were 5 great years and I met a lot of great people in my guild. Best MMO I've ever played.
I grew up with Gw1 as my first MMO. It was that or WoW but I did not want to pay subscription. and since a few of my class mates were playing GW I started it too. Was I blessed
When players needed other players and h/h was a last resort. If only GW2 didn't "do away with the Trinity", we could've had that feeling of genuine support and positive engagement with non-NPCs
I'm playing it again....
Couldn't believe, that this game would beat Eso, FF 14 and other Game even nowadays.....
You see how extremely old this game got, but the Things which made gw special are absolutely worth playing it again.
Your heroes give you the possibility to solo through the game because there is much less population but if you are playing on american servers you often find someone in a city. This are nice talks and the People support you like in the past....
you made friends ? I was always mad at everyone cause, I was into pvp.
The first Guild Wars game still holds up pretty well graphically. I’m impressed!
It really does! I've never looked at the graphics and felt they've aged poorly, they still help with completely immersing me in this world
They updated the graphics and i love it just dont have enough time yet to play around.
Especially when you realise it came out in 2005, those graphics are really impressive.
old video, isnt there literally a graphics overhaul update in 2020 in gw1.. . i would buy it.. but these kidn of games are only fun with friends.... :D
made by disgruntled ex world of warcraft devs that wanted a more pvp focused experience......... they knew what they were doing
Kurzick vs Luxon pvp will forever remain in my heart.
I remember Touch Rangers I think in the Jade Forest PvP Map with the Turtle Cannons
That and the coming of shadow prison sin's... Best pvp I ever seen in an mmo
Good old AB times
@@cambeul Yep, guilty as charged :D

This may sound weird, but this game means the world to me. It was my childhood. The amazing people I met. The fun times. I will never forget it. I still play to this day. At the moment I am mostly trading in Kama. If anyone wants to chat about the good old days or if any new or returning players need help with anything, I am always happy to help. Over those thousands of hours I spent in this game I have pretty much achieved everything I ever wanted. Got everything I ever wanted (Gwamm / Zaishen12) so now I am happy to help others out. I think overall, Gw1 has one of the best and kindest communities I have ever seen. You have your trolls and weird people everywhere but there are so many kind and nice people there, just enjoying the nostalgia. And I am so happy to see that so many people are coming back to Gw1 and even new players trying out the game. Its just amazing. So, thank you for this video, I love it. My In Game Name is "Ipyx Life". As I said. Always happy to chat or help someone out :)
Zaishen 12 AND GWAMM?! I hate you. Jokes haha, but those were always my dream titles and I think I'm sitting at 24 maxed right now, and like r4 zaishen.. Man I miss grinding all day and night for titles, and I could not agree more with your comment; the community was AMAZING, and it's so great to see that population nowadays still holding strong. Thank you for the comment, when I get back in-game I'll be sure to add you :)
@@thadumbgoose xD yeah its been a loooooot of work...but i am very proud of it :P well all i can say is: keep on grinding ^^ go get your gwamm! if you ever need any help or financial support or sth. just hit me up mate! and i love that you did this video! its awesome to remind people that gw 1 is still a thing
Suuuzhkki Ne I KNOW RIGHT?!? thats just awesome i think. That a Game is able to create so many strong and beautiful memories for people. I will never! Get tired of this game and the soundtrack and everything. Damn I’m back to playing it daily again these days! Come and say Hi when u get Ingame someday!

Ya similar boat I played this game to hell and back, accomplished everything. Honestly, while there's no point feeling regret, I do feel shame and frustration. These 'achievements' are the result of sitting, hunched over a damn virtual screen, for thousands of hours, days, weeks months gone into it. I feel like i disgraced my own body. Yeah, I would recommend against mmo, or any time sink grinding video games, the results aren't worth it, the sense of accomplishment ain't worth the degeneracy of the whole act. There's so many more beneficial, rewarding things to do in this life we're given.
Ya, sounds a little ridiculous to 'normal people' i bet. But i literally gave months, hell, even years of my life to this fucking shit, so i learned a lot of lessons.
Karp Yx legend, I just started ESO but hasn’t really grabbed me yet. Thinking of giving guild wars 1 a go
damn i miss GW1 so much. both the pve and the pvp were so fucking good. and to think it still looks and plays better than most newer mmorpg's
People are still playing on/off and there are always people in Kamadan. Log on sometime :)
yea looking forward to meet you ingame :)
Thats it im downloading this gem again. Hands down the best gaming memory i have in my whole life
Met my wife in Guild Wars. This game was legendary
The gw1 formula is pretty perfect I'm surprised they gave up on it anet should have made another franchise with the same ganeplay style
Yep, they didn't include alot of the things WoW did, which is more immersive. Instead they focused on everything else, removed some important gameplay elements, like jumping. This gave them so much more to work with in the other departments. The formula they came up with is as you say, perfect. The level 20 aspect is also amazing, put their focus on everything else... Genius videogame.
GW2 its different, but still a good mmorpg and one of the most populated mmorpg's :P
The mixing and matching of skills, the entire game is 1 goal, combat.... No grinding Crafters lvls, no hard grind to max level. The real game was simple, get all skills? Sure, maybe get certain achievements? Up to you, Wanna farm something? All you buddy!!!
Got excess money? Get elite armor, it's no better then regular armor but feels good to have.
@@Victor-em8vw If what go you going was build making, GW2 was one of the biggest disappointments ever. maybe a good game, but a completely different game
@@kwonj126 I agree. I love being able to mix and match skills and make my own builds. Skills and mechanics were easier to understand but much more customizable. I have been looking to see if I could find a new game that is like this and nobody seems to know of one.
I am literally on the edge of crying myself to sleep. This game was my childhood and is a part of what made me who I am today. I learned how to speak english in this game, and made great friends. No game will ever have the same dept of strategy.
I also think this has real esports potential. I wish anet would release a PvP revamp of this. But I can keep dreaming
The game is still active!
Gw1 has a very special place in my heart always
In GW1 l felt important. My build was key to our success! In GW2 l felt like l didn't matter. 50 people trying to kill something and l would die 20 times... I felt VERY unimportant.
Agreed
Use ArcDPS it can be depressing at first, but it will help you learn to play better. You'll see what skill orders work best and eventually it will make you feel real good about yourself when you outdo other players on your team
no heroes and weapon based build made every character feel the same... Missed all the gw1 builds... team builds, solo builds, duo builds, so many possibilities....
gw2 wants to be wow too much
@@Haydenh127 The difference between worst and best still pales in comparison to an effort that requires 8 people coordinated like clockwork to take down a nasty boss. Just standing in the zerg doing "more damage and not dying" barely makes it any more fun.
I've been playing GW1 from the start and for the latest 5 years I've been going back to it now and then. I think there are so many things that set the game apart from either its predecessor or the other MMOS I've played.
One of these things is that the never game was never "patronizing". I've played a bunch of MMOS and most of the time, the dialogues and interactions between the characters feels like a basic hollywood movie with cheesy dialogue. To me, that is an issue. There is a fine line between a few jokes here and there and absolutely not giving a fuck about the seriousness of the matter. There are many quests in GW1 where important or familiar people go through horrible things and everyone is either terrified or devastated about having to deal with the aftermath. The death of Althea (who has been a friend or teacher from the beginning) breaks Rurik's Heart, the death of Rurik, the slavery of the Dredge by the Stone Summit, how you've been played for a fool by many people who you thought were your friends, the list goes on. GW1 brings you back to reality all the time : life is hard, and you're in for a lot of tough times. It's not an easy cheese cake and the moment you realize this is when you can actually accomplish great things. In GW2, most characters are either crybabies or blatantly incompetent and all you can do is feel sorry for them and do the hard work while they cry in a corner. None of the characters take matters seriously and it just feels like no one really gives a fuck. I want a game that cares.
Another thing about GW1 is that as you said, the whole game is the experience. No two zones feel the same, every bit of the game is different from the rest. In GW1, there is lore and story everywhere you go, it hardly ever feels like grinding aside from when you're maxing titles. And even maxing titles grants you either bonuses agains't foes or simple pride in having accomplished something so drastically difficult. From the first zone of the campaign to the last, there are various quests here and there, elite bosses to kill, different landscapes to see, different cooperative missions to accomplish, new combat mechanics and strategies, new foes to encounter, easter eggs to find or hidden lore to uncover. There are too many MMO's I've played that had the same map for two different instances, that had the same redundant foes with little difference, the same redundant combat mechanics, etc. Some games out there really feel like the dev's didn't care so much, as if they were bored and just copy pasted everything everywhere. GW1 is over 15 years old and is still more complex than a whole bunch of games out there.
There is also something about the story of GW1. If there's one thing about it that I love, it's that you are hardly a hero, and the game keeps reminding you of it. You start as a nobody, then the searing happens and you find yourself fleeing for your life led by a traitorous prince. Then you go through the shiverpeaks and the very prince who helped save so many from the Charr dies the most undeserving death. When you reach Kryta, you get played for a fool by the White Mantle who make themselves look like friends but actually only want to use you, and when you reach the crystal desert, the game basically tells you you've hardly even proved yourself at this point. You go through the shiverpeaks again and finally make good friends only to see them die in the fire island chain. And in the end, you realize not only that you've helped the very enemy of the game come back and accomplish his goals unknowingly, but you also have to kill Rurik, the very person who helped save your life in the shiverpeaks and who was there from the beginning of the game. The story in GW1 is amazing in itself and feels original from beginning to end : you're not a hero, you're someone who's fighting for his/her life from start to finish. You've been broken, you've been chased, your people have been wiped out and the few survivors are scattered here and there, people use you, and most of your friends turned out to be unreliable pieces of shit who were only after what they could get from you. This amount of depth and honesty is what made the story truly admirable and realistic : life is not all fun and games. It's a chess game where most of the times you're going to lose, but you're gonna keep coming back.
But that story is only the story of your character, as there is so much more lore to be explored everywhere else in the game. From the mysteries of the floating tower in Kryta to the mirage of the huge statue in the Arid Sea that turns out to be shattered all over the place when you reach it, all the while stumbling upon abandoned Temples and Ruins of a people you never met and know nothing about. There are countless dungeons to be explored, over a thousand different quests to be accomplished, and so many landscapes, people, armors and weapons, zones to come accross. The amount of content Guild Wars 1 has to offer is tenfold the amount Guild Wars 2 has, or any other MMO for that matter. And yet it's 15 years older. The game mechanics are still praised to this day, and for good reason. Sure the game wasn't perfect, but I keep finding myself going back to it and never even once considered selling my account. No other game has retained my attention as GW has. Best game ever.
picture how better the guild wars 1 would have been if Ascalon had not been seared where we the player character in that vanguard mission destroyed the caldrons have killing the charr protecting it.
Best moment was going beyond the wall for the first time to fight the Charr in pre-searing Ascalon. I met a dude that wanted to teach me how to play, so we went there to practice.
I met a guy who taught how to rush from Ascalon to Droknars Forge and I made a lot of money doing so. I really miss this time.
*Remember how sad it was when you found out that Althea was...DEAD, and her ashes were all that remained?*
somehow I do, I really did, wow
Rurik and her are together in the mists now.
I miss gw1 =( best game ive ever played in my life
Thanks for making this. I miss the old days of farming charr in pre-searing on my ranger. I probably spent more time in pre than any of the expansions due to the amazing community. I miss the crazy deep amount of strategy involved in pvp Alliance Battles and how amazingly chill it was for a large scale pvp battleground. I miss the old guild halls, capes, and tags. The atmosphere and the music You aren't alone. I don't feel like playing again will bring those experiences back for me, because I stopped playing even before the hero system so that would be a bit alien to me, but maybe one day we'll be able to look forward to a game that at least tries to capture something of it's greatness. From a former officer of LaZy. Thanks again for making this video.
No need to miss. Pre is still there. I was farming charr yesterday.
Hey Odin, and thank you for the comment! Some serious nostalgia from what you wrote :) for real, I really hope we see another MMO like guild wars again. It sucks because the genre is at a low, and I don't think big studios will be taking on developing an MMO for a while aside from a couple in the works right now, but hopefully an indie team might pick up where GW1 left off, and use a lot of similar mechanics. I understand; while this game doesn't have the same effect on me as it used to, I love to just pop back in every so often and work on my guy. But yeah, that really special feeling I had while playing back in the day isn't there as much. I am forever hopeful for a spiritual successor!
ive been looking for an mmo game that could compete with guildwars for years. and its now 2019 and i still cant find anything as satisifying and involving as the gw1 series. this game is just beyond time, so many memories and stories with players online , its uncomparable with anything else
Only mmo on par with GW would be Final Fantasy 11 in similarities.
I dont even have to watch the video to just say "Yes, yes it is."
I just discovered this game the other day 'cause a friend got me into it, and now I am addicted to it... I DON'T EVEN REALLY PLAY MMOS AND I LOVE THIS!
i got to play this being mainly 1-st person shooter for ages, now i only play GW1 because it requires also brain :)

the best part of gw1 was his community, I still play to this day with some friends I made almost 15 years ago
we used to be beasts in pvp in gw1, and bonded so much we kept playing together for all these years
we always remember how good gw1 was, if only gw2 was anywhere close to it :c
Yeah man, GW2 sucked.
But seriously, I was so hyped for GW2 and it was like THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT in my whole life.
GW2 was such a bad WOW clone and until now I regret that I wasted time in this game.
This game was amazing, I met some really good people on the other side of their screen. I still wonder whatever happened to all of them =/ I imagine they are having a good life and living healthy and happy.
Guild Wars 1 deserves a second life, some reviving expansion and changes, fortunately you can play it alone which I rarerly did, I enjoyed the farm runs and doing missions with team full of real people, I rarerly played alone.
I played alone most of the time. Just shows how great the game is for actually letting you do both ways that well.

THE BEST MMO GAME EVER MADE IN HISTORY, IN HIS TIMES THERE WAS MANY MANY PLAYERS ONLINE, TRUE GAMERS, BEST PVE/PVP!

I remember charging people to run them to Drok's or L.A. good times!
drok's runs were a lot of fun. you'd always have people who would try to cut and run on you at that last small outpost though, lol
Guild Wars my true MMORPG love and my first.
Sadly Guild Wars 2 never gave me the itch from the original though it looked nicer and the story was better executed.
Btw Kurzick supremacy! :p
Guild Wars was the first game I played when I bought my first gaming PC waaaaaay back in 05. So many good memories. Clans/Guilds were actually a big deal back then, so you really got to know the people you played with. I still wonder how they're doing sometimes. Thanks for the nostalgia:)
I absolutely love GW!!! I wish I had a pc right now to play again. I had 3 accounts lol!!! My main was a ranger/rit... I also do not have the GWAMM title lol. I do have legendary defender of Ascalon though. Lvl 20 in pre and that toon is still there. I miss this game a lot!!!
I just started playing again after a lot of years and it really does hold up so well! I miss those days of 05/06 when it was really easy to find groups for stuff and PvP was active, but its still fantastic. I have the best memories playing this game with people and the amazing community it had
So today i bought brand new acc and diched the old one for the fresh experience. Officially i'n back after quite some years of not playing! FEELS GOOD!

Man i still dream of guild wars 3 but they just rework guild wars 1 i am still dreaming for this
Guild Wars 2 sucked so much and nowadays they earn money by microtransactions.
I really miss the good old times, though.
Well...more than 2200 hours on my back... I remember when, with my guild Friends, we've gone down to the FoW for the first time: 3 minutes of total freeze, no one brave enough to make a move and then total wipe in a second; we have learn a lot after that failure and got fissure armor with multiple characters. Some of the best time as a gamer are still in this game, indeed. Thanks for the video!
Great videos! I still love GW1, it'll always be that special one that never gets too old to play every now and then. The only reason I can't play as much as I used to is because the best parts of GW1 is PvP and there's not even remotely enough people for that these days. GW1 was released as a CMO which I find is a pretty rare model and even though the game was made more into an MMO as time progressed it's still the unrivaled CMO even to this day. Hope to see ya all in there! :)
Just got back in GW since the quarantine and am so happy there is still a community. I am getting my FoW armor for my warrior this time!
Guild Wars > Guild Wars 2
I still go back in and play GWs 1. It is still a beautiful game, and one of the best there ever was.
I played guild wars 2 for a few hours and i just couldnt do it
Loved Guild Wars 1, but I think it was a much better game before the expansions. Heroes wrecked the social aspect. Instead of going on memorable adventures with other players (because henchmen were so bad that you were forced to) you plowed through most missions with dull AI and communicated with others via a chatbox. It was a cool idea, but ultimately made the game a much more solitary experience.
I agree with that! I liked it more when you could only take max 3 heroes with you, and the rest had to be players or henchmen. Because I ALWAYS chose players over henchmen whenever people were available haha. It was also great from an in-game 'running' standpoint, like I had kind of a business where I'd do HM or NM missions for people and they would pay me for it, which always felt really cool to me, but when they change it so you can fill the whole party with heroes that died out a bit more. Thanks so much for your comment Pixel!
I think they knew they were spreading out the player base with nightfall, with essentially 3 mmo world's that players spread out to.
Also, I don't think it would have survived the way it had without Heroes. That being said, I enjoyed the base game more as well.
Also, nightfalls heroes did open up their storytelling with more tools so I get why they added them
its true, and this game became truly epic when i was introduced to a guild with all the social aspects of it like a voice chat server etc
Now, with the Mercenary system, you could conceivably fill every empty hero slot with one of your own characters. This is a good way to test out builds for your own characters. While it does take away the "social" aspect, it can help teach you just how good (or bad, in some cases) your individual characters actually are. That being said...I have several perma-pre characters that I still often play.
Hopefully the success of WoW classic will spark some interest at ArenaNet
yooo thatd be so good id love to see it with a more vibrant playerbase again
If you look closely at some mmo's that followed guild wars you can see it's influence. ESO and ArchAge specifically come to mind with the way you build characters from various modular skill trees in those games.
Also, anyone remember dungeon runners?
The good old days of getting slaughtered by Shiro Tagachi 😂 would totally play all this again.
I can't get into new mmorpg's because they feel void of all the ways GW1 was re-playable. Even GW2... you just run around and spam your skills, and do time gated dailies for months over and over so that you can have fancy items with weeb skins and then stand around in town like ":3 l got finally harvested enough muffins to craft the cocksicle" "Gz ^.^"
That is not replayable endgame. It's arbitrary tasking for pixels. might aswell be a baking simulator.
That skill-bar, those arenas, the farming, the runs, there was so much shit to learn and do that made GW1 really fun for max level characters. And how you used your skills really made ALL the difference. Didn't matter which axe you had, it mattered that you combined live vicariously with cyclone axe and kept yourself alive with aoe + hit-regeneration and you had to keep your eyes on the timing. Simple game mechanic for example sake, but you get the idea. Nothing really makes you play like that right now. Not even mentioning how that music in pre-seering just transported you into a beleivable fantasy world.
Guildwars and The Secret World. ....... forever in my heart.. A remake of both games would be absolutely breathtaking. Maybe in 10 years. maybe we have to start our own company. who knows. but i keep hope. Could cry.... fucking nostalgia.
ESO has become a modern day gw1for me in a small way. With a semi- build-a-deck skill system, great lore and endless story and dialogue it feels like a very cozy game to play that you can tailor to your playstyle. Gw2 is a pale shadow of what could have been as far as I am concerned.
My best moment is the game was my first FoW run as a warrior using the hundred blades build. second best memory was soloing smite crawlers in UW with my warrior for ecto. the days of old my friend i still also wish a game will come out with this caliber of game play and story mode and pvp. sometime i wish i could go back in time just to play it again with some of the great friends i made along my experience. thanks for the video touched my heart a little that there are still people out there that wanna experience a MMO like this!
R.I.P. gw
Never ever found another game with such a great PvP content.
The best MMOrpg i ever played so far...
not RIP, I just started playing again and 2 of my friends as well, furthermore a lot of towns got more people in it and I really see a rise in the playerbase:) do dont worry.
Old goldies won't die.
the new recycled crap we get these days won't compare to it EVER.
what about guild wars 2? how can they even call it guild wars, imo totally different game than guild wars 1. really bad
Guild Wars is a MASTERPIECE! GW2 is only merchandising-business game. Nostalgia!
I'm debating playing this in 2020. I've played gw2 since launch. Never gw1 what do u think ?
My absolute favorite game of all time. Guild wars 2 is great as well, but it's just not Guild Wars 1
Agreed!
I kinda grew up with GW Factions and it's very nostalgic for me. I can go back revisit the game at times just for the nostalgia.
But I never actually got any good at the game and the combat allways felt a bit too hard for me to fully understand. I see so many people online talk about how much they love the combat and gameplay of GW1 and I feel like I missed something great because I played through Factions and I enjoyed it but I never really learned how to play properly and GW2 is just so much easier for me to enjoy. Maybe I'm just a casual noob. I love GW2 but I also love Factions and it feels like such a shame to have played GW1 and not enjoyed it as much as other people did.
Most of my time playing Factions it feels like I just had a combo of skills that did alot of damage and I spammed it to kill one enemy at a time while my bot party members were responsible for anything more tactical. x)
I was first introduced to GW by my now ex husband in 2006. So I guess he was good for something, this is me, giggling hysterically.
I am medically retired and tend to play a lot. It's one of the things that helps to keep my sanity in check, sort of. :D I recently created a N/R, she seems to be one of the better combos I've done in many years. I've started and retired a number of characters, as I assume most of us have done. Years ago I was in a really good guild, some of us were in touch outside of the game as well. Believe me they were pretty blown away that not only was I (then) married to the guy I joined the guild with but that I was an actual, honest to gods girl!! *gasp* lol
The funny thing about the game is that I don't really run with anyone, I never even ran with my ex very much. That does tend to create problems sometimes, quests I can't do. Running to Droknar's Forge for a start. My ex and I had enough of an issue getting there together.
I did set up a guild of my own, which I'm the only member in it. Basically to avoid all of the guild invites, especially from people that assumed since I was a low level that I was a noob. Which is semi understandable, but a few of them I went off on as they said I could join for 1 platinum. Yeah, seriously. While I like to run solo at times for stress relief, few things blow off steam like blasting the heads off of Char. It does tend to get a little lonely. Actually if anyone is still reading this (thank you, btw) and see me running past you in town somewhere.... I'm Raspberry Blight. Say hey.
I kinda wanna get back to GW! I really miss it
My very first character was a Necro/Ranger (Prophecies). When I got Factions, I created a Rit/Ele, which is my preferred. Spirit-spammer is so much fun. Just saying. I have several perma-pre characters I still play (I have 6 accounts). Charr hunting is always fun with someone who knows what they're doing.
I miss this game so fucking much. 7k hours and never got finished with any character, but enjoyed every second.
You make me wanna delete my dervish and relive Nightfall after 10 years
I just did :D
This is the best MMORPG ever! I’m still playing after 13 yrs
Still playing after 14 years and love this game. you did point all the good of this game gameplay is awesome, don't need to play hours to get max ( the player is the difference), and a very very tactics game !
15 years... jesus, makes me feel old
@R I was 17 when I first started the game and 19 when Eye Of The North was released.
And now? I really feel old....🙂
My first and favorite MMORPG. Well ahead of its time with the whole "e-sports" wave of popularity. Customizable PvP builds were the way of the future. Used to love HA and GvG'ing; game had and still has the best PvP mechanics of any game I've ever played - couple that with the natural progression from PvE into the PvP world, it was perfect.
I was skeptical about buying this game since it's really old but your video kinda convinced me. It's 50% off right now so I should take advantage of that.
You won't regret it, man! The start is slow (like almost all MMOs haha) but if you push past that it becomes so enjoyable! Thank you for watching!
@@thadumbgoose I have one question though: are the classes like ranger, mesmer and warrior much different from their GW2 versions?
@@TheVintress It's kind of hard to compare the two because the games are so different in terms of game mechanics. I actually found this thread on the GW2 forums that sums it up pretty well: en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/30551/what-is-the-difference-between-gw1-and-gw2-classes hopefully it helps, but if not, I'll try to clarify a bit better!
xry way different. And you can have secondary profs. Builds way more customizable.
Add me. Avatar Barloc.
"Can you drop your Tormented Axe, so that I can put it on and see how it looks on my character?"
"Sure, there you go"
... and there he went. Biggest mistake of my childhood.
Mallyx runs were Hella fun, but dang those skins were annoying to get. I feel ya man
Sorry for your loss :( That sucks but it's also funny:D
Definitely the best MMO ever played. The way maps were instanced made it so that combat was very challenging, because it is 8 players maximum. No other MMO gave that challenging feel
This game was my childhood and I miss it so much. Reppoh Kered, if you see this, The God Of Kurzick here!
Guild Wars.... My Love!
For you guys that dont know, alliance battles are up on friday and fort aspenwood is on weekends
Best MMORPG ever, hell best game ever in my opinion! Shame A-net wants to be Blizzard. Cos they really had something speciall there, yet they decided to sht on it and go with the rest of genre bandwagon.
Such a missed opportunity, going for a true sequel of guild wars for guild wars 2! I agree!
GW2 was a cheap (yet very polished) WoW-clone. Really disappointing.
Gw2 not a WoW clone at all.
@@russianFB7442 I think he means in terms of how GW2 was more like WoW than it was like GW1. It's not a WoW clone, I agree; there are just a few more similarities to WoW over GW1
@@thadumbgoose well said
do you guys hate guild wars 2 that much because i love it has one of the best graphics you love the action camera and good content story.
I don't hate GW2 at all. It's a good MMO. I'm just trying to say I wish they went with more of GW1's gameplay in GW2 because it was so sick
@@thadumbgoosei see i agree gw1 a good game but i don't understand about gameplay like you guys taking about gw2 hybrid combat system do you want it to be tab targeting,i know some people time old tab targeting and some fast pace action combat now a days almost all new mmo is action combat base but i dont see anything bad in action combat it not like unfair or its also not hard to under stand and i know there are many thing gw2 can do but you also have to keep it mind it's run in variable rage of pc like a high end pc to a potato pc that why gw2 can still maintain it's population and its not new gw2 is also a old game it's from 2012 and the last expansion came out in 2017 it give you so much free it not pay to win or need to add money to buy any special item like WoW and FFXIV.
Gw2 is better for me personally. The combat, graphics, and animations in the first one isn't as fun or immersive as the second mmo IMO. Gw2 has a lot of amazing features and improved what the original had and is continuing to improve. The story I think, is amazing, plus the world is huge and immersive as well. Plus you can only play boring ass humans in gw1, sure the story is good, but that's about the best thing about it. I think nostalgia is blinding most. I really don't get the hate train and "oh gw2 is ded", when that's not true at all. I know most of this is subjective, and I'll probably get a lot of hate for this, but I think gw1 is overrated.
What's the difference between GW1 and GW2?
The minions in gw1 are far better than that of gw2. I wish I could remember my account and password.
my friend had that problem too.. well if you play gw2 it should be that email now since they are linked
I've never been an MMO player, but I did love the original Guild Wars. I believe they even tried to make it an MMO for non-MMO players. I have never seen another MMO come close to the gameplay quality this one had.
You briefly mentioned Guild Wars II here, and I'd be curious on seeing a video comparing GW1 to GW2 and where you think the latter fell short.
I miss this game, and that era of online gaming.
Awesome game still awesome in '22.
When your character first starts in Ascalon. Completely overwhelmed me from the start. I was heartbroken during the searing. Crossing the shiver peaks and running to droknars. I just installed it this weekend. Finally got chaos gloves
LFR Droks 😁
There was supposed to be another expansion and continued expansions instead of EoTN but then someone in Anet was like "How can we ruin this franchise"
GW1 will always be my favorite, I kind of wanna go there right now again. But you made me think. What about their servers? I'm not as worried about getting a second Guild Wars in the future as I am that it could be, somewhen, never be started again. I really hope that when they decide to discontinue the servers they allow for private servers or offline mode or something else.
gw1, runescape and diablo2 were and are the best games of all times
i think DAoC is missing there too the PvP there was insane at its prime time probably ultima online as well
Best. Game. Ever. Playing since 15 years.
Anybody with Unreal 4 knowledge should recreate the Tutorial Map.
i will never forget my late night grind with guild wars the one and only game that was hooked on a deep level
I play GW1 everyday. It is the best game I have ever played. There are still a lot of people that still play, especially around the holidays. Thank you for making this vid. Hope to see you in the game somewhere.
I never played it but full confession Guild Wars 2 is my favorite MMO not named Everquest or ESO so it will never be removed from my PC ever. I look at videos like these with all smiles, knowing that they still support GW1 so long after release makes me smile and know that when a GW3 does eventually come out the game I STARTED with will get supported, plus it is interest to see the beginning of the lore, races and history of Tyria I never played. For me in keeping with THIS theme you speak of the greatest mmo regret I have is in going into World of Warcraft over Final Fantasy 11. Never being able to experience Final Fantasy 11. Thanks so much for the look into GW1 and why you loved it then and now, was a refreshing fun watch.
Bring Guild wars 3 to consoles. But as Guild wars 1 remake. Guild wars 2 got old real quick. Always coming back to Guild wars 1. ESO is on consoles but got boring quick too, GW1 weapon skins still way better then ESO by far...
Gw1 was my first mmorpg, great times.
the nostalgia goosebumps are real.. this game..
Tempted to start an endless essay about my memories of it, but it wouldn't do it justice..
I started playing this with a friend of mine in my last year of elementary school.
I'm 26 now...
fucking hell.
thanks for the vid, i'll check out the rest of your channel:)
Guild Wars is easily the best MMO of all time. Solid pve experience and probably the best PvP system ever designed in this genre (Guild vs Guild). Many players still playing everyday after 15 years of its release. And some PvP formats are still alive on fridays and weekends (Alliance Battles and Fort Aspenwood). Some ppl will say best is WoW but GW never had the popularity that brings the Warcraft franchise per se (also being Blizzard) which makes GW legacy even more meritorious. We won't see something similar again.
My dude, you hit all the points right. This game is near-perfect!
Thank you Jeffrey! And damn straight, it's one of the best :)
so happy I found this channel ♡ GW1 was my favorite game. still have dreams about the excitement of DoA runs 😭
Personally I love guild wars 2, but even though I’ve never had the chance to play gw1 (soon I will) I can’t help but feel it’s lost the credit and recognition it deserves. Maybe one day both games will be on equal terms, but both will always have a special place in my heart.
thanks bro! i have a lot of beautiful memories about this game... hundrest of houres in PVE AND PVP! It was a beautiful PVP Game! I was rank 9 ;-)
Best mmo ever
I first started to play this game right after its release, back in 2005.
It was the first MMO I played and it was a great experience back then.... our small 2 men guild gradually expanded to a guild/alliance with almost a hundred members at its height.
I haven't played it in a very long time now and I've lost contact with almost all of the guild members, I really wonder how some turned out.
Maybe I should look the up on FB or something, see if we can have a little reunion... for old times sake.
They added crazy skills and weapons for the anniversary! So many people logged in towns. 😲
One of the best games ever made! I started at release and still log in for a bit of running around the maps. Had the pleasure to meet so many people there and make actual friends. I'm really sad that GW2 did not keep the same farminga and end game... And of course the crazy gated / time crafting for armor and weapons.
Best game ever, best mmo pvp "adh inter dis 1 flamewars" 🤪
Re Down loading it now really miss playing this love GW2 but this is so different
This reminds me how much I dislike the "new" art style in GW2.
GW1 was my first foray into online game in 2006. The experience is still fresh and unforgettable.
Thanks for the video man.
