The character designs are so fun. The art style is fantastic. The ONLY gripe I have so far is that the fights aren’t animated as dynamically as I would have liked. But it’s easily forgiven because the drawings are SO good. Like, I haven’t seen a single “lazy” face. Every frame looks consistent. Awesome stuff.
Yea, he's specifically talking about the little intermission music they play with a still frame (still picture) during the little gap after the intro and after the outro. It plays a little piece of music with a chill beat for a few seconds. But yea, in general all the music is fantastic, including the OP and ED ;)
suzan kalvin I see what you mean but unless their familiar with it most people will just lump 70s-90s anime as just 90s. I can't blame them I make the same mistake allot to.
"This anime's not trying to sell you anything, but I am!, " said Mother's Basement, as he swiftly ended the video with a quick shill for Dollar Shave Club
Word of advice: don’t use flushable butt wipes. Despite their labeling, their not really flushable since they don’t dissolve in water. All they’ll do is clog up sewers and amass as “fatbergs.”
I almost bought Dollar Shave club once, but then i found their supplier through a google search and the razors they are using are low quality that can be bought for cheap.
The story of MEGALOBOX's success is so incredibly similar to the story of the protagonist Joe that it feels like it must have been deliberate, but you know that it can't have been, and that's what makes it so amazing to me. How both the story presented within the show is an underdog story that hits basically all the exact same story beats as the real life story of how the show worked it's way up to the top, gaining international success and popularity, by drawing people in with an interesting premise and/or gimmick, and then keeping them interested with a fantastic underdog story. I don't even know if this comment even got my point accross, but it's just mind boggling to me how there can be so many coincidental similarities between a show's fictional story and it's real life story of success.
many of the 90's show didn't have to downscale their shit to make it look the way it is, whoever thought of this shit tries way too hard to be in the past while not living in it.
I just like the grimy real facial feautures and detail in the characters and backgrounds not to stylize it but make it look real and brutal ..i miss that..back when things weren't digital only the shows had actual interesting things to look at even when they weren't moving cause you could appreciate someones efforts in their drawings and how long that must of took them ..now stuff like sword art online feels like the worst part of modern anime...its like combining flash and actual solid design work to draw in the cute loving fans while being a show about death appealing to them too ..it just feels weird...even the main female in megalobox doesn't look over stylized in terms of her actual face and body..no big boobs ass ..her costumes are simple too...nothing too fancy to stand out as fanservice..i rather like it...
I love Megalobox's soundtrack. They recently released the full album on Spotify and I've been listening to it non-stop ever since. Some of my favorite tracks include "Theme of Pepe Iglesias," "Enter the Arena," "The Slum" and "Resolution" along with all the rap songs by COMA-CHI. I'd recommend that anyone who's interested check it out, you will not be dissapointed.
Remaking a show with over 100 episodes that was directed by one of the most influential anime directors of all time and is considered to be one of the best anime ever made... WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG ?!?!? It would be suicide to try to remake it, this is probably the main reason why they made Megalo Box instead of a remake.
Everyone talks about the art style but the story is gold and not to mention a great range of characters of all color and shape. Coming from poverty and seeing joe literally fight his way to fame is something I dont think we see much in anime so I do love how joe carried the soul of the poor and working class throughout the show being a symbol that coming out of nothing doesn't mean you can't be something. Not to mention he is shown to have all the support of others along the way.
I friggin love Megalbox. If this whole thing is a metaphor or symbolic of the art direction of the anime industry, it's doing a great job at it so far.
Patrick Dees Its based off Ashita No Joe/Ashita No Joe 2. If you're gonna watch that. Watch until ep 54 then go to Ashita No Joe 2 since in Season 1 anything after ep 54 is non canon and retconned.
Honestly the best thing the show has done for me, aside from evoke my nostalgia for Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and Samurai Champloo and the like, was nudging me to finally watch Ashita no Joe, which has been one of the most amazing anime I've seen in a long while and now one of my most favorite anime of all time. I've been enjoying Megalo Box but no matter how it ends there is no way it's going to come close to what Ashita no Joe did for me.
I already watched it a long while ago and it's what made me interested in both Megalo Box and Ashita no Joe in the first place, as well as boxing in general :)
I'm so glad people are watching and enjoying this anime as much as I am. It's refreshing to see something so good, yet completely different from what's out these days. It does such a great job at seeming like a retro anime, that I originally thought it was retro. I planned on binge watching the whole thing, until about episode 5, when it ended on a cliffhanger and I realized it was still ongoing.
a show that isn't trying to sell you merch is pretty rare now a days and it ironically made money got attention and people wanting merch from it when that wasn't its intention..ironic...
One of the best anime's I've seen. I thought it came out in the late 90's early 2000's because of its art, but I looked it up and it was 2018, so they intentionally made it look more retro which was the best art style choice for this series grittiness and story.
In my opinion this is one of the best anime this season, from it's constant parallels to classics, to it's amazing visual metaphors, a masterpiece through and through.
In my opinion the whole show is a allegory for steroids, and about the struggle of the fighters who don't use them. Hell, in pro fighting it's pretty well known that "Gear" is code for roids.
That was my first thought as well. Professional athletes using steroids, no matter the sport, seems to be quietly accepted nowadays. It's just that some get "caught" for one reason or another.
Mr.wheat dont get me wrong ... this is definitely my anime of the season .... but an ending to a story structure like this can either make or break the series .... every time i think of this series i pray it succeeds ..... but wait until the end before jumping into conclusions
KonohaXV my dude, I have watched it so many times, I see Twin Cities two freaking red faces whenever I close my eyes. Anime tends to anthropomorphise non human things. What's like a robot but more human? A cyborg.
I fell in love with this anime. It literally has everything: good pic, story, characters, style, awesome music. I guess many people just don't like sports-style so don't even try watching it. It's their great mistake
I just finished the show and loved it. I didnt know this anime aired just a couple of years ago, i was sure its from the samurai champloo era. Im stunned!
L Lawliet If you like good anime try Ashita No Joe/Ashita No Joe 2. The character development is real. If you plan on watching it watch until ep 54 then go to Ashita No Joe 2 since in season 1; anything after ep 54 is retconned by season 2. (Also season 1's animation is pretty outdated but season 2 has good enough animation for you to enjoy) Enjoy
I'm happy I decided to watch more Ashita no Joe and then head to Megalo Box, your previous video gushing about this new show made me get through more of this franchise. I can say Megalo Box is doing many things differently and correctly, but for me I can safely say that Ashita no Joe will still be my personal favorite of these two. Unless Megalo Box can really throw me a big surprise like the other show does.
I am gonna create a genre right now?*the bepbob genre* because pretty much it invented it. Like samurai champloo and megalobox , trigun, the dark and gritty animation is outstanding for nostalgia

I have never considered owning an anime statuette but I think I'd buy a Joe statue in a heartbeat if i had the opportunity. Joes character really inspires me.
just wanted to say thanks for turning me on to this show! I saw it on your Spring's Best Anime episode and then watched about 2 minutes of this video before realizing I needed to just go and watch it. I am a huge fan of Bebop and Trigun and their art styles and this is the show I didn't know I needed! Thanks again!
I discovered this show during your Spring Breakdown and knew it was the one I was going to watch. I have been loving it thus far and I am hoping the show goes for it and throws a loop at the end to really help set itself apart so it is remembered down the line. I have a feeling that will not happen as editors seem like they want to avoid risk like it is a plague.
i personally don't have any real attachment to the older style of art that the show uses in a sentimental way like many people do, but i am obsessed with this show, the art style fits and never takes away from what is happening and the gritty design fits the show great, but what sells me on the show as one of the best i've seen in a long time is everything else, the characters feel real and relatable, the tension feels genuine, all the motivations and interactions all are sold so well, it brings you in so well and then the fights feel so real, they are not super over the top, or over choreographed, its boxing not a break dance battle and its between people not gods, its just so well crafted and you can tell in ever scene all the love that went into it, i would also love to see a HD remaster as long as it doesn't compromise any of its style or feel
Ok..ok....ok......This was amazing! I didn´t knew about this anime or even heard anything from its fanbase, but I'm glad you were the first one to pop-up in my feed. Also, I really like that there are moments in the video in which you reference you infographics and not only that, but you make a joek out-of it. Case in point, 3:32. This was really interesting, thanks for introducing me to Gareless Joe.
I'm loving Megalobox. It and Steins;Gate 0 are my two main shows that I really care about this season, with a side of Hinamatsuri when I'm in the mood and My Hero Academia whenever I can find a way to watch the dub without subscribing to Funimation now.
It wasn't about who lost or won, it was about the fight itself, the fight was the goal. The reason the final ep was called "Round final "Time to die"" was because it was time for the goal to die, no need to complete living after fulfilling its purpose
I was really liking it but half way through the season I made the mistake of binge watching all of Hajime No Ippo and now compared to that masterpiece of a Boxing anime; Megalo Box feels more like a solid anime to me than an amazing one.
Thanks for dropping the date on the soundtrack release. Gonna be a day 1 purchase for me too. I believe the reason a lot of the older anime from the 90s holds up and is emulated so well in Megalo Box is because they pick strong pieces of music to invoke the right feeling at the right time. Cowboy Bebop's gateway shuffle and Rush right before the action takes place? Trigun's harsh guitar rifts when he kicks Monav the Gale? The bombastic beat in the intro of episode 4 of Megalo Box where Gearless Joe makes his intro with the ref and the zoom in? All these scenes are goosebump worthy in a way a lot of the recent digital anime can only do late in their seasons with feels. Thanks for showing love to this underdog show and praising it where it's due among the sea of rabid moe/SAO-like wannabes who are pretending to be the genuine article.
Gamer Garm but devilman crybaby is an adaptation not a spiritual successor. Sure it updates the source manga a fair bit but it's not a spiritual successor at all
Just started (and caught up to) this show today and I literally just couldn't get rid of the big grin on my face every episode. Really enjoying it and I can't wait for this finale!
I just watched the whole anime one go..... 2 things. 1) it's art and music bit the nostalgia cord perfect, has like-able characters , keeps moving relatively fast paced versus what most Western fans know of anime. 2) (il keep as few spoilers as I can). By the end it felt like to many other similar boxing anime( mean the other two greats "hajima no ippo"and "tommorrows Joe" which it is a revamp of. What i mean is I felt a little cheated thinking I was gonna get more mech talk out of this because of the setting. Boxing matches with robot arms. Instead it's just the same underdog story, I see the appeal of the unarmed man destroying his supposed betters that have better tech. However it's just more small dog get big dog because small dog has more skill. I honestly wish they would've dropped the gear all together and just made the real tommorrows Joe( skill beats strengh)which is the antithesis of hajima no ippo( strength beats skill) in the absolute roughest way. That all being said. I encourage anyone to watch all three anime I've mentioned and il ad (Cowboy Bebop) because of the fantastic art style that megalo boxing and it share but its definitely worth watching atleast once. But once will be it for me.
key words enjoyment....that matters..likeable characters ..no real villains...even the antagonists are likeable ..the story could easily be about them as the protagonist we follow ..they all have their own reasons....I feel anime shows now a days do 2 things...1. they make a varied cast that function or look relative the same base wise but have different personalities to appeal to different people to draw in the biggest audience even if it is a detriment to the show itself or adds nothing to it to sell more merch and take away from the main character especially puttign spotlight on the antagonist as sympathetic or just as much emphasis on them or 2. make half the cast unlikeable to make the others shine even brighter even on the heroes side...its just lazy...I like a show where everyone is enjoyable..cough yu yu hakusho did a great job in that..i didn't hate anyone..even the worst like dr. bitchigaki and tarukine were enjoyably awful...that matters to me..
I have yet to see a single second of this anime that wasn't feature footage in a review video, but I'm honestly surprised that there seems to be so many people hating the downsampling, classic look of it. I LOVE it! When it comes to watching animation techniques evolve over time, seeing something so carefully crafted and molded after the "genuine article" of the 90's classics is so refreshing and exciting. Instead of feeling like blowing the dust off of a vintage wine or other aged good like when watching old anime, it feels like going into a new, artisan pub and getting something fresh but deliberately and methodically prepared with a love and nostalgia for the original thing that inspired it. I agree that eventually having an HD release of this eventually would be wonderful to appreciate the undoubtedly tedious work into constructing this anime, but in a world where bright, shiny, polished 4k reigns supreme I wouldn't even mind if they only cleaned up the footage a small bit. I would happily look at this anime for hours and hours as-is without even having to know or understand the underlying plot. I think it just looks so good.
I think what I love the most about this series is that after you strip away the fantastic music, the stunning retro looking visuals , the plot is solid and written like one of the best 90s anime, there is a reason why Trigun and cowboy bebop is held in sutch high regards, megalobox captures this fantastically while not falling into the bad tropes found in the bad 90s anime , this show is just great and I can't wait for the next episode!
Man, there's absolutely nothing I want less than to see a full HD version of this anime. It looks perfect as is, and I think it's the best looking anime I've seen in I don't remember how long. I want most/all anime to look like this from now on
As an aspiring martial artist working fulltime to pay bills currently training in karate and muay thai and eyeing a potential first amateur match in the near future the character of Joe really resonates with me because I feel that deep need to prove myself out there and see how far I can go. I have doubts of course about how successful I can be but it'll drive me nuts if I don't experience it at least once. Joe's drive to get to Megalolonia was inspiring. If I ever to get into the ring someday I'm definitely walking out to something from this soundtrack.
How do I use your code when ordering from Canada? when I go to the /basement link it changes to the states. I know you're also Canadian so there's gotta be some way lol
Yeah that's the first thing I tried but the page it brings you to in order to select the starter kit is a states based page! try.dollarshaveclub.com forces you to sign up through a U.S. region. Maybe I'm just getting a bug? I just want to make sure you know in case others are having this problem. gotta make sure you get dat revenue :^)
Haikyuu is good and all, but I just want that old, gritty slugfest type of sports anime. For me, there felt like a void after watching hajime no ippo. Just no sports anime felt the same. Haikyuu and others similar are good but for a different reason.
Ippo is set in modern day. This is future/sci-fi. If you mean when they came out in real life, both were produced in the "modern" anime era, although MB tries to use old school-esque techniques and aesthetic. I like both series, for the record ;)
The adventures of black hajime no ippo is top tier. Also I didn't notice that no more heroes dude copy in the background on your shelf, you really are the anime pope we need but don't deserve.
It's funny how a show about a futuristic take on the boxing sport has one of the most underwhelming fights I've ever seen. It's almost as if they are only poking each other, I don't feel the "gear" in to play. I'm not hating btw, I had my eyes on this show before the season even began (especially hearing that this is a spiritual succesor to ANJ). It's just that the lack of creativity and sound design (regarding the fights, not OST. The soundtrack is godly) really drags the anime down, an anime about people punching each other fcs. I also don't really care for our MC Joe here. He's just really boring imo, cool, but boring. The side characters are the ones who are interesting in this anime, especially Nanbu. To anybody reading this, please tell me why you like Joe (if you like him that is). A great example of a show with both aspects in check is Hajime No Ippo. Creative sound design consisting of jet engines, Screeching tires, rusty like metal sounds etc, with compelling characters (side and main) and a great story. Honestly, the way I see it, Megalo Box is just using boxing as a way to tell the story unlike ashita no joe or hajime no ippo that mixes both. I guess the 13 episode cap has something to do with it but still. Atleast give us good fights to remember. I'll still watch for the story, though I'm not gonna gush over the next episode every week. If Joe does die in the end, it would earn some respect coming from me as much as I have of it already. Atleast this can kill time until MADHOUSE announces the next season of Ippo... yes I'm still hoping lmao
I like Joe but I can't really give you any good reasons why outside of the basic he's cool shit. I like Ippo more and I think he's a better written character.
that is one problem I have with megalo box, unlike hajime no ippo I feel like you could replace the boxing with another combat heavy sport and It wouldn't change much.
These shit taste weaboos praising Hajime no Ippo and trashing Megalo Box because "tHe pUnChEs AeR ToO WeAk". I mean one is a fast paced indepth story about an actual underdog with actual character development, and life or death stakes. The other is a repetitive 1000 long manga with fights with no real stakes than "Oh man i guess we will have to try again next tournament" Smh
fiction Arch I agree fully. The fights lack impact man, impact. Hajime no ippo fights have often exaggerated knock outs, but that's why I also love it. Hell, HNI boxers look like they're the ones with gears unlike MB lol. Joe has a lot of problems as a MC as well. What is he fighting for? What is his motives? Is he in the tournament to prove something? Is he there just for the thrills? Just show us if not tell us. An underdog story is not an underdog story if you can't find any reason to root for the MC except well because he is the damn MC. I want the fights to have meaning. What is Joe thinking as of that moment. What strategy is he coming up while in the fight, that stuff. He just goes to the ring, gets beat up most of the rounds. Boom boom pow pow, go to his corner, "you can do it Joe, we are a team". Go back, get a punch in, bang done. If there's not an episode solely on Joe within the next few episodes, I'll probably don't care if he does die. I'd like to, but I can't
kicsnasdc lol I'm not gonna entertain you much longer so I'll just say this. I am not trashing Megalo Box, we are not trashing Megalo Box. I praise what deserves to be praised, ost is godly, story is interesting, the gritty theme is a breath of fresh air. Interesting supporting cast, Etc, Tell me what's different to episode 9 Joe to episode 1 Joe, where's this character development you're saying? "No real stakes" gtfoh. Unlike you I watch both series so I know what is and isn't unlike you. That's all, continue with your name calling bullshit of an arguement. I only invite openminded people in this thread. I invite discussion from MB fans who can actually take criticism.
I love megalobox so much. I just hope that we get to learn more about Joe some time in the future. I really want an episode focusing more on his past before it ends
I like this show but I do have one serious problem with it. It's not a boxing anime. It just isn't, flat out, period. Sure it's kind of ABOUT boxing, but the actual matches are fast and very frequently end in a single hit one way or another. There is rarely back and forth and even when there is it's mostly just said to us. The final contest between the two at the Megalobox championships goes 13 rounds, we see maybe...7-10 minutes of it? The rest is just exposited toward us about how back and forth it is. Even when they do show boxing its all super tight shots of clamped gloves blocking a hit or a wild swing shown from above the stomach. I can count the number of times the shot showed both competitors entire bodies facing each other in the ring and they threw more than three punches before it cut away on one hand. That's like, in the entire series not just in that last encounter. It's kind of silly, imagine if you could continue to call Kokuro no Basket a basketball sports anime if 80% of the shots where of either; a bouncing basketball, a closeup on someones face, a closeup on someones hand dribbling a basketball, someone shooting a shot in a void shown from the shoulders up, a basketball going through the hoop uncontested, a closeup on someones hand missing a basketball in flight or two guys looking at each other while one dribbles the ball twice before a quick cut away. I honestly don't think you could, and boxing is MUCH more about the exchanges and the dance (as megalobox puts it, which I would agree with) than basketball is. I am not calling Megalobox bad, it isn't, i watched it all and loved it. But if you put Megalobox (even it's best match hands down) against almost any random fight in Hajime no Ippo (even the bad ones with the gag boxers nobody expects to win) it won't even be a contest. The tossed off fights we don't even really care about in Ippo get 10X the love, attention and character building as even the super important fights in Megalox box. This is JUST judging the quality of the matches themselves understand, not either show as a whole, I am just assessing them as boxing matches, not anime and not stories right now. So yeah, Megalobox isn't a boxing anime, it's a character study and emotional trip framed with boxing. It's not that they don't try to give equal screen time to the matches (even if they did, that isn't bad, half of Ippo's storytelling happens during the matches themselves at least), it's that they clearly aren't interested in the matches. The matches are a hurdle they have to jump to get on with the story so they do what they need to and move on. The writer doesn't treat them as anything other than something to get past to move on, this is very evident as almost zero character development happens in the fights. The closest they get is people making a decision about something already bothering them during the fight and even that happens like...twice? Past that the only thing that happens in the fights is the fights. You could honestly supercut them out and replace them with a spash screen of the results and you just wouldn't lose much. You can blame some of that on the time they had available to tell the story but that's a cop out, just tell less of the story before the fight and more of the story during the fight. Just because it's slightly more difficult a thing to do doesn't mean it's not something that should be attempted or something that should be desired as a "boxing anime". TLDR: This is a great character anime. This is a terrible boxing anime.
The art style is actually a breath of fresh air I never thought I'd see again in these waves of trendhunter anime nowadays.

The thing I love most about Megalo Box is how it has that "90s Anime feel" to it, despite being made in 2018.
DBZMacky Same here, dood. It gives off that “classic” feel that I love so much. It has a unique charm to it.
Well, it helps that it’s actually a revival of an oooooold anime and manga series. Googling Megalo Box literally took me right to it

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG ?!?!?
It would be suicide to try to remake it, this is probably the main reason why they made Megalo Box instead of a remake.
PLEASE YES
You all don't want that, you don't understand what's happens.
I have just finished season one and I’m now starting nomad, this anime is now one of my favorites! It hit realllly hard!
Finally this anime is getting the recognition it deserves. It's amazing.
I've been enjoying Megalo Box but no matter how it ends there is no way it's going to come close to what Ashita no Joe did for me.
it is really nice to see that Megalo Box motivated people to watch AnJ.
watch Hajime no Ippo as well, it's great.
I already watched it a long while ago and it's what made me interested in both Megalo Box and Ashita no Joe in the first place, as well as boxing in general :)
You made a right choice.
00ammy00 Good taste detected
You know you’re on UA-cam too much when you still show up to videos early and you didn’t turn on notifications. Might as well do it now
same lol
at least I'm not the only one lol
Waynimations good luck with making that work coz it never have worked for me a in a long time
Don't see a problem
Waynimations i'm not even subbed lmao! But i watch all Daddy G's videos!!!
Megalo Box also has one of the best soundtracks of the season.
Holy fuck. That's an awesome way to look at it
That's a much better metaphor than the "it's a statement about digitalized anime" that I've read in quite a few comment now.
@@shparto1118 That metaphor really makes sense in the penultimate episode. Damn.
That was my first thought as well. Professional athletes using steroids, no matter the sport, seems to be quietly accepted nowadays. It's just that some get "caught" for one reason or another.
@@mawichan it could be both tbh
Watching Megalo Box reminds me why i fell in love with this style of story telling.
If this doesn't win anime of the season then I'll be angry
Mr.wheat fuck that. Anime of the Year
Depends how good MHA is this year
if we exclude sequels, the new Legend of the galactic heroes is still better
AOTS is a subjective opinion. This started great, but now i'm enjoying stuff like Hinamatsuri way more.
Mr.wheat dont get me wrong ... this is definitely my anime of the season .... but an ending to a story structure like this can either make or break the series .... every time i think of this series i pray it succeeds ..... but wait until the end before jumping into conclusions
This video has more views than the number of people's ratings Megalo Box has on MyAnimeList.
How underrated !
Real Steel, the anime.
TyphoonZebra Don’t think you’ve seen Real Steel Lol.
KonohaXV my dude, I have watched it so many times, I see Twin Cities two freaking red faces whenever I close my eyes. Anime tends to anthropomorphise non human things. What's like a robot but more human? A cyborg.
TyphoonZebra That first sentence was pretty funny. That is some pretty good insight though. That’s a cool way to look at it.
I just want to add that Real Steel is friggin' fantastic, and underrated.
Bavarian Banshee I mean robots fighting is always gonna be cool.
Im honestly in love with Megalo Box. Cant wait for the fight with Yuri!
I fell in love with this anime. It literally has everything: good pic, story, characters, style, awesome music. I guess many people just don't like sports-style so don't even try watching it. It's their great mistake
It's more like 70's-80's feel, it has the heart of a Showa era series.
I just finished the show and loved it. I didnt know this anime aired just a couple of years ago, i was sure its from the samurai champloo era. Im stunned!
We need a gritty 80s/90s looking streets of rage anime that looks like this.
S2 was even better imo. Less boxing emphasis and a greater emphasis on the characters. Fucking loved it
I'm hooked, I'm literally paussing your video until I catch up with the show. It looks awesome, thanks for recomend it.
L Lawliet it's amazing enjoy
L Lawliet I forgot to watch last weeks episode so I had the treat of two episodes. This anime lived up to the preview's hype.
I’m sure you’re gonna love it
I've watched the first episode and got me hooked.
Almost cried when Joe made it into the tournament lol episode 9 favorite so far every episode is lol
"not dead yet"
Appears in every episode end, in the last it will die certainty
I am gonna create a genre right now?*the bepbob genre* because pretty much it invented it. Like samurai champloo and megalobox , trigun, the dark and gritty animation is outstanding for nostalgia
When you put all youre money on your equipment and still got beaten by a critical hit from a free user...
Guesse spending money on this game is useless afterall
THE STRONGEST HERO honestly the best analogy for this
Random crits are fair and balanced
As Joe's experience demonstrates, the grind to get there is real.
stop doing p2w
I can't believe I'm saying this, but... I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MAL
same man
Same
It's back now! But, you can't interact with other users since they disabled discussion forums and reviews. As well, you can't search for manga/update it :(. As of now, I've been exporting my MAL list onto anilist.co in case it crashes again. This is the only way to keep track of my list for now...
Megalo Box is amazing.
The artstyle alone is a far cry from the 90's, something which i've missed.
its sequel Nomad is actually as good as the 1st season in its own unique way
Can't believe they turned Roblox into an anime
CheesecakeLasagna xD
I dont get it...
You GOTTA do a video on NOMAD! Somehow it's the greatest underdog of the year again!!
Megalobox s1 and 2 is undoubtedly a masterpiece and a great experience for any anime fan out there who wants a great underdog story
He looks like the guy from Samurai Champloo and Rage of Bahamut
Yeah I definitely agree
Now the “Japanese but looks kind of black, with pseudo-Afros” trio is complete.
Mugen
spike
Joe
KonohaXV you think Steve blum will voice Joe when the inevitable dub comes out to fill the trilogy of those characters?
Stevan Gonzalez It would be amazing if he did.
Did no one fucking see that justin Y was here??
I have never considered owning an anime statuette but I think I'd buy a Joe statue in a heartbeat if i had the opportunity. Joes character really inspires me.
At first I genuinely thought it was from the 90s or something, I thought Netflix was mistaken when it had 2018 as it's release date
just wanted to say thanks for turning me on to this show! I saw it on your Spring's Best Anime episode and then watched about 2 minutes of this video before realizing I needed to just go and watch it. I am a huge fan of Bebop and Trigun and their art styles and this is the show I didn't know I needed! Thanks again!
Any Ashita no Joe fan watching this video?
Here :)
I finished it a week ago, loved almost every minute of it
The series is in my top ten favourite manga so just really happy to see people even mention it!
I hope that Megalo box motivates a lot of people to watch/read it
Raihan Hakim98 Yep. My favorite anime of all time.
I wanted to see Ashita no Joe but as far as I can tell none of the services Im subscribed to carry the first season, Megalobox is great so far though.
Exactly I fell in love with it just from the trailer and the anime is just amazingly beautiful
i personally don't have any real attachment to the older style of art that the show uses in a sentimental way like many people do, but i am obsessed with this show, the art style fits and never takes away from what is happening and the gritty design fits the show great, but what sells me on the show as one of the best i've seen in a long time is everything else, the characters feel real and relatable, the tension feels genuine, all the motivations and interactions all are sold so well, it brings you in so well and then the fights feel so real, they are not super over the top, or over choreographed, its boxing not a break dance battle and its between people not gods, its just so well crafted and you can tell in ever scene all the love that went into it, i would also love to see a HD remaster as long as it doesn't compromise any of its style or feel
I hope more anime would have a similar artstyle
Kyotosomo the jokes are hilarious
Now binge Ahita No Joe
The only masterpiece is Ashita no joe
I love ippo but comparing the two because they have boxing isnt smart. The story in ippo builds to the fights. The fights in megalo build the story.
I totally agree Richard, luckily the most recent episode (awesome) has helped me separate them a bit
Hajime no Ippo is being seriously under appreciated with an anime like this receiving such praise (though well deserved).
Now if someone could just bring back the harsh shadows and exaggerated lighting technique
Who came here after the trailer for Megalobox 2: Nomad?
The idea of Joe dying just makes me want to cry 😭
OG weaboos know that Aishta no Joe is the real underdog anime
Shane Okakpu never been called an og before thanks
...and that's why this is a spiritual successor to Ashita no Joe in the same vein of DEVILMAN Crybaby.
Shane Okakpu Lmao yes
Gamer Garm but devilman crybaby is an adaptation not a spiritual successor. Sure it updates the source manga a fair bit but it's not a spiritual successor at all
Shane Okakpu hajime no Ippo*, change my mind.
Just started (and caught up to) this show today and I literally just couldn't get rid of the big grin on my face every episode. Really enjoying it and I can't wait for this finale!
Geoff?
Why do you have an SAO figurine on your shelf?
Bram Jans I think he said in another video that even though he has no respect for SAO, he thought the figurine looked cool, so he bought it.
Bort no he obviously love sao it's his favorite anime
Fatimh Almatrafi Yeah I did hear that to be fair. Must be true.
Thank you for talking about this show. It has a lot of heart and soul. Can't wait to see the rest of series.
What I love about Megalobox is the visuals have a texture to them I haven't seen in ages.
The show is definitely worth a watch I'm thoroughly enjoying it
key words enjoyment....that matters..likeable characters ..no real villains...even the antagonists are likeable ..the story could easily be about them as the protagonist we follow ..they all have their own reasons....I feel anime shows now a days do 2 things...1. they make a varied cast that function or look relative the same base wise but have different personalities to appeal to different people to draw in the biggest audience even if it is a detriment to the show itself or adds nothing to it to sell more merch and take away from the main character especially puttign spotlight on the antagonist as sympathetic or just as much emphasis on them or 2. make half the cast unlikeable to make the others shine even brighter even on the heroes side...its just lazy...I like a show where everyone is enjoyable..cough yu yu hakusho did a great job in that..i didn't hate anyone..even the worst like dr. bitchigaki and tarukine were enjoyably awful...that matters to me..
*GIVE US A STEINS GATE 0 ED BREAKDOWN GEOFF*
*REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*
AsianWithHat what is there to break down it's all pretty obvious
***WRRRRRYYYYYYYY
Does he have at least a single video on steins;gate overall?
This show is honestly my 2nd favorite anime. The amount of feels I had when nanbu literally ripped out his eyes has yet to be topped
I haven't tried this anime out yet but it seems nice to see I don't know should i?
Gabriel Cunningham yes
Yes. The only criticism I have about it is that it's very predictable, but other than that it's amazing. 4th best anime this season.
Thanks for the info
I think what I love the most about this series is that after you strip away the fantastic music, the stunning retro looking visuals , the plot is solid and written like one of the best 90s anime, there is a reason why Trigun and cowboy bebop is held in sutch high regards, megalobox captures this fantastically while not falling into the bad tropes found in the bad 90s anime , this show is just great and I can't wait for the next episode!
Started it 2 days ago, caught up yesterday
Man, Megalo Box is probably the best anime of the season, I really love how it is executing the plot, and the box fights are awesome as well
man, these character designs are pulled totally from ashita no joe
muad yussuf no shit lol. Everyone's a AnJ copycat, except for the good parts of their respective character
That’s cuz it is ashita no joe
The anime that EVERYONE is sleeping on
Where Nomad at?
Man, there's absolutely nothing I want less than to see a full HD version of this anime. It looks perfect as is, and I think it's the best looking anime I've seen in I don't remember how long. I want most/all anime to look like this from now on
"the genuine article" - the worst translation when it should have been "the real deal" smh... Flipped me off more than one time during the anime
There is a button in the top right corner to change regions
Yeah that's the first thing I tried but the page it brings you to in order to select the starter kit is a states based page! try.dollarshaveclub.com forces you to sign up through a U.S. region. Maybe I'm just getting a bug? I just want to make sure you know in case others are having this problem. gotta make sure you get dat revenue :^)
This made me go and watch every episode that is out atm!
It is so AWESOME!
Thanks gor doing this video
Finally a good modern day sports anime
General Grizzy haikyuu
General Grizzy Why finally?
Hinomaru zumou is coming out
Haikyuu is good and all, but I just want that old, gritty slugfest type of sports anime.
I haven't seen anything thing like this in year!!!!! Good things still exist in 2018 so glad that I found it, sometimes I'm in tears
Oh my god @7:21 senpai notices me!
Kshatriyah keep it up, proud of u
CheesecakeLasagna thanks will try!
The adventures of black hajime no ippo is top tier. Also I didn't notice that no more heroes dude copy in the background on your shelf, you really are the anime pope we need but don't deserve.
Say what you will, but I actually really like the modern anime art style
It can look good. But it is lazy
I started watching this recently and I really like it so far. Thanks for recommending this, Geoff.
If you ignore, oh I dunno, Hajime No Ippo and Ashita No Joe, maybe
Peasham Love those two animes. Personally Ashita No Joe 2 is number 1 for me
Yeah same , ashita no joe 2is my favourite of all time . So sad to see that people compare hajime no hippo to megalo box while forgetting AnJ
ZetMan. What's sadder it is the anime series that inspired both Hajime No Ippo and Megalo Box.
Intenxsify Yea! megalo box is made in homage to AnJ.
You don't know how long I've waited for this video:) Thank you so much!
The other is a repetitive 1000 long manga with fights with no real stakes than "Oh man i guess we will have to try again next tournament"
Smh
fiction Arch I agree fully.
I really want to see a "What's in an OP?" for this when the season/series is finished
