LAPD Metro K-9 & Hazmat Responding Code 3

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Metro K-9 units responding to a search for a suspect in the Wilmington area. The third vehicle is a hazmat unit, which responded due to a substance found.

they have a number of new (2018) unmarked Tahoe K-9 units and unmarked 2018 Suburbans. Sad that they don't have them as marked units.

@@policepatrol3230 yeah seen that one. Was hoping for a marked 2018 tho. It's kinda a shame that most of their marked fleet is of Explorers. Could be much nicer if they also had a number of marked new Chargers and Tahoes.

I believe there are plans for them to utilize the Dodge Charger in small numbers on the street racing task force, although I’m not sure if that will encompass them in a marked or unmarked capacity.

usually, its because one is coming in and one is going out. they orbit together so the outgoing one can relay information about the scene before leaving.

@Frank Dux yea. LA has at least 2 helicopters up at all times covering the city, with another 1-2 on standby. when a major incident like this happens, one of the on-duty birds responds before being relieved by the standby. the main bird then returns to the helipad for fuel, checks, etc.

Nice capture on the newest K9 F350 truck. You can tell they like abusing the slide switch mechanism because they don't turn the siren off but rather switch into the standby light mode.

It's interesting how many K9 vehicles show up to an event like this--most agencies will have one k9 show up and maybe one additional where the handler will run w/the primary dog and handler. Anyone know the thinking behind this?

LAPD Metro K-9 consist of 18 Police Officer handlers, 5 Sergeant supervisors and 1 Lieutenant Officer-in-Charge. They respond in groups to search requests. Typically, yes, only 1-2 dogs will be deployed on every call, however the remaining officers will be apart of the search team and will be assigned different roles (i.e. Designated Cover Officer, Rear Guard, Communications, etc.) Basically keeping their training internal and as specialized as possible.
