Avenches, Switzerland is a small town near the French border that is steeped in history that dates back to the Celts and still has structures from the time of the Romans. In this video you can tour the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, a 13th-century castle, medieval monuments and historic building and walk the cobblestone streets, with arcades, irregular stairs, as if you were there.

Avenches isn’t actually a village. In order to become the title of a town or city, in Switzerland there must be over 10’000 inhabitants. Avenches has a mere 4’000 only but still owns the denomination of a city since 2’000 years ago the then called Aventicum was the capital of Roman ruled Helvetia with an estimated population of around 20’ to 22’000 people at this time. At the beginning of the 4th century, hordes of Alemans roamed the country and overrun the 5.7 Km long defense walls in one single night, killing thousands and enslaving all others who didn’t escape fast enough the city for the surrounding hills and woods. Said city wall, as well as most of the towns buildings, were built with the yellow chalk stones brought one by one from a carry in the Jura over 60 Km away…
The Rock you can see at 08:15 has been placed in memory of Ernest Failloubaz, Avenches born child and Switzerland’s first pilot with the license nr. 1…
