I was very pleased to have called Robert Douglas (Duke de Lorca) my friend for the last fifteen years of his life (he died at age 89 in 1999). He had a full career first as a film actor and later a TV Director primarily for Quinn Martin Productions. A lovely , vibrant man who enjoyed a hearty laugh and a cold beer. RIP!

Errol Flynn was a great actor and swordsman, but I always thought Basil Rathbone was better as a ‘swashbuckler’ type actor in the golden age of movies as he was an olympic swordsman and Shakespearian actor as well. You can’t go wrong chosing a movie with both Errol and Basil in it.

Flynn was only 37 when this was made. The first of his scenes shot was the final one, where he looks considerably better. Apparently his latest movie had got bad reviews and he drank during the rest of the production as a result. It's not a bad film at all, but it isn't up to the standard of 'Captain Blood', 'The Sea Hawk', or 'T.A.O.R.H.', apart from Steiner's music, the photography and some of the sets. It's fun, but not the kind of genuinely memorable films I mentioned. Flynn and Fairbanks are still the two great swashbucklers (no disrespect meant to the other actors who have appeared in this kind of film - as good as they were at times, both Flynn and Fairbanks had something unique).
