  • Every year, on Good Friday, more than 3,000 drums gather in the square of Calanda. For 26 hours they play uninterruptedly, bordering ecstasy. No one knows exactly why they do it, some believe that the drums emulate the earthquake that shook the earth after the death of Christ; others feel a tremor in their spirit produced by the terrible rumble... But all of them enter a collective trancein the town that vibrates in unison, turning into a catharsis that raises them a few centimeters above the trembling earth.
    "Raíces vivas" (Living Roots) shares the ancestral knowledge transmitted from generation to generation orally, written or simply through experience.

    The project "Raíces vivas" (Living Roots), under the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, creates a new audiovisual archive on intangible heritage. The author, Juan Rayos, is a filmmaker and makes documentary work that draws on contemporary narrative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and curated by Juanito Jones.
