- An often overlooked aspect is building trust. So here's some thoughts on how we can build a bond of trust with our birds and why it's important.
Thinking about and understanding our raptors psychology and natural behaviours is an important part of being a falconer as it allows us to bring out the best in our birds.

I love falconry because, unlike most animal-human relationships, falconry birds can just leave if they’re unhappy. That kind of mutually beneficial bond is so special, because you’re not just telling yourself that your pet is happy; them being there is proof that they’re happy.
Absolutely once they are free flying, the decisions are theirs to make.

Brian Landers Well, like I said, it’s a mutually beneficial relationship when done right. Falconry isn’t like training wild birds to eat birdseed out of your hand; it’s a unique kind of relationship with an animal that is only semi-captive, and is wild (ie. no genetic domestication whatsoever).
I don’t romanticize such relationships, because a fundamental part of falconry is not getting overly attached. And while it’s arguable that solitary predators like raptors will never feel the same desire to be friends as us ultra-social humans, birds of prey nonetheless mate for life, and are definitely capable of developing feelings of trust and camaraderie towards certain humans who have put the work in to earn it.

While watching this video I wondered about the falcons that have been used a lot in movies in recent times. How do the actors develop that level of trust, when they are not the primary care-giver of the bird?

Same for me. I watched some interview on another channel and the falconry guy says he was married for 16ish years and he and his wife found out falconry when they married. He was excited and his wife was “eh”. After 10 years they had the chance to finally start falconry.
I hope i can be stable enough to start falconry one day, preferably not too late :D

Your birds look in fantastic condition. I am curious about falconry and appreciate the dedication, commitment, investment and responsibility it takes. I've seen some sorry looking raptors in the past I'm afraid. Thank you for your channel. It's good to see the wonderful example you set for any thinking they might like to have a go at it.
Falconry can teach other humans how to be better humans and how not to mistreat and abuse each other... wonderful hobby. I just wish most humans would approach relationships with each other the same way.

Thank you for your in depth information on how to build trust with birds. This morning a Red-tailed Hawk found itself trapped in my carport from the wild. The unique opportunity presented itself to take the information you share and put it to practice. Although wild, I was able to keep the Hawk calm and it was actually very light weight in my hand. When it was aware that it was clear for flight it was able to take flight from my hand and was such a surreal experience this morning. Thank you for your channel.

This is so amazing: I’m not a “bird” person per se although I love birds! I think birds of prey and the like are beautiful to watch in action. I just don’t have that “gift” that you do and I truly believe it is both a gift and a talent to be able to work with these intelligent birds.

My highest flying falcon reached nearly 2500ft (I have a tiny altimeter he can wear). Its incredible.

WOW! I just found your channel and I have to say that you are amazing! When I was young man I had the chance to go to the university of Alabama and get certified to work with and keep raptors. I wanted to do demonstrations for kids in school and such. It wasn't about any money they are such amazing birds that I'm sure it would have inspired young lives. I'm going to watch every video you have made. Do you have a playlist in order? Keep it up! In cases you're wondering life happened. Nothing dramatic just life.

You should have your own TV show, might not be as Care free as UA-cam channel though. Not saying it's easy, just less respectful and red tape. However like you said it's all about the birds and their experience. I love your channel and all your videos. Very educating and help others respect birds and their environment... Along with many other animals as well. Because they all thrive together, plants and animals and the environment.

Love the informational videos. Could you do topic video on the requirements by law to own birds of prey. I live here in the US and I am pretty sure you have to jump through hoops of fire to have these birds.

Tbh, i wish schools worked like that. They are first come, first serve. Keep up and/or shut up. Individual's dont matter. No intelligence, just education. Its sad.
As a former teacher, my opinion is that what you describe is not education at all. It's just socialisation, which is also important, but education is the development of a whole human individual, assisted by parents, teachers, and others. Most of us are lucky if we manage to pick up a bit of education almost by accident! Parents or guardians are the most important people since they teach the child from infancy, intentionally or not, and provide whatever opportunities the child finds for early self-development. I was extremely fortunate that my father was very fond of books, science, literature, music, and many other things: I learned an enormous amount from him. I could write a treatise on the true nature of education, but I'm sure this is the wrong forum for that! LOL :)

Outside factors are also being forced to suck, like both parents needing to work all day to make ends meat which gives them no time with kids. Meanwhile you have tv and music brainwashing them into becoming little hookers by the age of 9.
Its all intentional. We are being farmed, unless you happen to have been born into money or just freedom, such as with your self.
I have a baby bantam chicken it's 4 weeks old we think it's a hen, so I'm naming her ,Beulah she knows to trust me, I can hold her and she has learned to come me it's really neat!I'm hoping to one day, making a leash to take her for walks !

I would kill for a bird that doesn't bite, but sadly, my bird was abused, he is old, and only trusts you when he is in a cage, or when he is in a good mood, and wants you to pat his crown feathers.
He had a lot of bones broken when we found out his backstory

His name is goos. He is a pink and grey, we have had him for around 11 years now. His past owners obviously said a lot of horrible things, bc when we found him, he would mimmick coughing, and said phrases like, call the police, come here baby, and keep your fng shirt on.
There are a lot of messed up people, these people were trying to force him into the wild, when he never would have survived. So many broken bones 😔😭
Everyone thinks Falcons are just bird used for sports, if me, I think they have feelings too, like other animals so you need to be kind to then
Do you stroke your birds, like you would a cat or dog? Or do they not like that sort of affection?
They don't understand or enjoy stroking. They tend see our hands the same as their feet, so anything where I would wave my hand or come at them from behind (towards their back) is going to be seen as aggressive. They do however, with training, understand that my hands are neither weapons or food, and tolerate me checking equipment/lifting up their feet to check for issues etc.

Do you ever take some time to affectionately "pet" any of these birds? The bird knows you are a female of "those guys" kind, as it also knows the playing child behavior of one kind or another. You would do well to explore bringing music, from you into its ears. Again I ask, can you Ms. Falconry, can you allow them to allow you to affectionately pet them? Show US doing so on on one of your videos; try to show them affection by trying to pet it. Totally cool episode, no?

I have a thousand questions. My first is. How would you suggest someone starts from scratch. I have managed to do with a murder of Crows what you're doing, but they are still wild birds. Do you raise the Falcons from birth? If so, how can I get one?
