The One Thing Trevor Jacob Needed More Than a Parachute When He Crashed His Plane

  • Trevor Jacob wrote "a lot of pilots can learn from my experience. Please fly with a parachute." If there's one thing we learned from his video, rather than wear a parachute, it should be bring a PLB. Yes, I know the whole thing is a staged stunt, but that has no bearing on real pilots. However, do think about what you would do if you piloted your plane down to the river bed in the canyon during a real emergency. If your cell phone doesn't work, you would rely on your ELT. However, if you have to venture away from your airplane or your airplane sinks after ditching in water, a PLB could be the difference between rescue or not.
A PLB is a Personal Locator Beacon that when activated, finds your GPS location and transmits it to satellites on 406mhz like an ELT. It works around the world and does no require cell phone coverage.
So feel free to ignore Trevor Jacob's silly recommendation to wear a sport skydiving parachute for every occupant whenever you fly an airplane. But, do consider purchasing a PLB to make search and rescue more likely to be a success.
If there's a second thing we learned is that his wallet is made for idiots and if you don't want to be investigated by the FAA and FBI, then don't get that wallet.

Absolutely, how do you think he would fight off the coyotes and the mountain lions?

The irony is if he'd just landed his craft and had a nice scary descent and bumpy landing, as well as the takeoff after repair (assuming a real incident), he'd have made views still.

Trent Palmer has something similar to this and had to use it when he had a real engine out and successfully landing off-field.

    • @kdawson020279

The critical difference is the fact that Trent Palmer isn't the god of the poseurs, and understands that landing safely is the ultimate goal. I'm glad he had one, sometimes forced landings take you from one survival scenario to another and personal GPS transmitters are now pretty darn affordable for people who might have emergencies where cell phones are useless.

My Mooney as an ELT on the dash we always have it armed and one press of a button and it’s alerting, we test it before every flight, but that’s a good backup for sure

Looks like this is the newest version of the one I have: www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/acr_11-17215.php
I have no affiliation or interest in selling these. I just have one and think it's a good idea to have one. I also have those aluminum foil space blankets for warmth/visibility. Used it exactly once when my brother came with me to Oshkosh and didn't pack a blanket and was freezing his ass off. Worst idea ever, I heard nothing but crinkling aluminum foil all night!

The one thing that is clear, is that not one single video exists that supports his action or anyone saying he done well. In this life, I learnt that if you are the only one right and the complete world is wrong, than you must stop and rethink your actions. Also you have to think about the consequences of your own doing. Nice video and a good lesson was the positive result.
Please tell me more about this unit. I do off-road in Africa and I do walks in the nature for extended days. May I make use of this in a serious situation or this only applicable to aviation?

    • @Mooney201er

It says "Application: Hiking, camping, rock climbing, snow mobiling, skiing, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding etc." and that it works worldwide. So it should work in Africa but the bigger issue is if anyone will bother trying to rescue you unless you have a suitcase full of cash with you.

@@Mooney201er Thanks for the reply. Will consider it. At age 60 I only needed it twice but it can make the difference between death and life. My most serious incident was a partial roll over in Tugela valley. I did not return home and wife made alarm. Nissan off-road club got 4 search and rescue vehicles together. We were lucky. At 06h00 the next morning we got a message through to say stop with the recovery - we are ok.
It was funny. Door was smashed in and window broken. One hitch hiker had his thumb up in the air when we went home. As we got nearer to him, he started to lower that thumb slowly. When we were close to him he turned his back towards us and started to study the mealie fields. LOL. I did not know that this equipment exist. Will make use of it for sure.

Not when the piece of ballast sitting inside of it is a no-brainer intentionally pulling this kind of thing!
PS, there was a radio. Why else would he be wearing a headset! The fact he didn't use it to get help just further goes to prove the point. He could have spent 10 minutes flipping through every frequency till he got someone and still had time to jump.

Why the hell would he need an ELT? He knew exactly where he was going to crash his airplane and how to do it. He just needed a shute to get to the ground and 2 feet to walk out. He didn't even need a map because he knew exactly where he was going.

I didnt think there was a beacon on that airframe? Isnt it pre-avionics? Maybe I'm wrong but you usually have to have a portable beacon or rewire the aircraft to carry one and this bird looks pretty bare bones. He should have used his radio to send 3 maydays though. Also, having a GPS to give his position would have been helpful for rescuers. Its almost like he didnt want help.....

Strap it to your body. Do not put it away in the glove box. If you crash you won't have time to retrieve it in case of a fire after impact.

I do that when flying over water or very remote places. However, during routine flights I've got a 406ELT, cell phone, and flight following. The PLB is best for remote terrain or water ditching where the plane's ELT may be lost.
